I followed the book to a "T". When I hit the set-up button I got a command choice that was nothing like the book and had nothing to do with recording or formatting. I have an Emerson dvd-vcr that I also use and I can only think that it was picking up something from it because the remote also acctivated the combo too.
I tried for many days and finally settled my nerves by taking it back.

So you had a Emerson dvd/vcr hooked up to a Emerson dvd Recorder?
You never said what model you had.
Its kinda hard to help when we don't know what components you wer using.
Too bad you took it back these Emersons are great!

Where did you get your upgrade?
BCJ2, did you download it from the net or did you get it from Funai?

OOOHHHH HELLL NO!!!...LOL
I just bought a crap load of 4x's. Never going to upgrade.
By the time I finish with all of my 4x I will have bought a new recorder. (I have like 500 QUALITY 4x discs. All gotten at below prices!)
4x media is still readily available in stores. Why upgrade? If it ain't broke don't fix it. You can still get DVD-RW 1x-2x in stores!
Plus I've stepped up to a burner on my computer. No need to upgrade.

Yes..
I read that too. Must have been a "bad" batch of upgrade discs.
He is lucky if he can, but who knows if these problems will still arise after his upgrade.
I'm not willing to find out.

BCJ2...
As I suspected.
I do not know why people just take a download from the net and install it without knowing the deal.
I am not 100% sure, but the problem with that download is that there are two different upgrades for these machines. If you put the wrong one in you unit it will have problems.
FOR THE LAST TIME>>>>>
Anyone who wishes to upgrade to 8x media, stop downloading from the net and call Funai for the disc!!!
All this rah rah I hate waiting, Funai doesn't answer the phone etc. is ridiculous!
I called and got my disc within 7 business days.
See what happens when you do not just do the right thing. Your unit goes south on you!
Sorry that your unit is crapping out on you BCJ2.

I got my upgrade disc in 3 or 4 days from the company. I am still deciding if I should do it. When dubbing video to dvd it won't let me pause out commercials? Anyone know a way around that? It will let me pause in regular playing but not in a dubbing mode. Thanks.

Emerson DVD recorders are manufactured by Funai Corp. Which also produces units for Sylvania, Symphonic, and of course Emerson. The EWR10D4 that I have worked great for the first year and then really started to have some serious recording issues. There is a firmware update on CDV disk that will allow the unit to recognize 8x media, but I would not recommend buying another Emerson. Besides wait a while until the industry starts producing units that record both - and + media as well as the newer double layer recordable media. I also notice that with my unit monthly manual lens cleanings are required to keep the unit recording reliably.
If knowledge is power then why do I so feel powerless

What were the recording issues?
The EWR10D4 and others is Funai/Mitsubishi made. The writer in this unit is made by Mitsubishi.
Please let us know Gotsilk.
So far my unit is fine.
Angie: When dubbing a vhs to DVD you can push pause on the remote when you get to a commercial. When the commercial is over just hit record. It is true that you can not simply "rewind" the dvd and watch to make sure you got all of the commerical out, but you most certainly can pause.

Thanks GregRod. I was wondering when I used the pause button it wouldn't show up pause on the tv or any sign that it was being used. I think the vcr is one of the best tracking vcr for old tapes. I always use sp for videos and 4 hour speed for straight from satellite.

How many people have had problems with recording not starting right away?
I don't currently have this problem, right when I hit record, it starts recording. I have not yet upgraded to 8x, but am scared to because I have read all the posts here and some people have had 5 sec to 30 second delays after hitting record.
My friend has the Emerson recorder too, and hers takes 30 seconds to even start recording...
I just wanted to know if upgrading is the problem...
Thanks,
:)

Kpasa96:
An educated guess says its "one" of the upgrade methods.
I think its those who have downloaded from the net rather than the upgrade you get from Funai.
If you have a nice stash of 4x media or if you can still obtain it at good prices then I'd say skip the upgrade.
I have a massive amount of 4x media and also have the upgrade and I will not be putting that thing in my recorder.

That's what I was thinking, except I bought & opened a 30 pack of 8x's, otherwise I'd take them back, and just get some of the bundles of 4x's...

Is there a way I can hook the emerson to another recorder? The way I have it hooked up I thought I almost had it the right way to use the vcr part of the emerson dvd recorder with another one. With the other recorder the main menu comes up on it but it will record blank even when the tape is playing. I even selected the vcr button on the emerson remote and know I"m not using the dvd part. I have the emerson vcr on either line 1 or 2. Thanks for any help.

I also bought and opened 2 different 50-spindles of 8x before I realized they would not work. I posted them for sale on eBay and explained what happened in the description, and sold them for within a couple dollars of what I paid for them.

Just following up to let everyone know I DID the upgrade to 8x last week, and there are NO problems on my end, it starts recording immediately, the quality is the same, so now my 8x's don't have to go to waste! :)
