I used a file I got in a link from earlier on in this thread, I went to the site & downloaded it, burned it to a CD-RW.
Then I hit CM skip 654 really fast and it says to insert upgrade disc,I put in the disc, and then after 3 minutes it was done!

Kpasa96:
Why didn't you get the firmware from Funai?
I really hope that your unit does not develop problems with that downloaded firmware.
As I said earlier, there are two different firmwares for these units. You put the wrong one in and bye bye unit.
I do not understand why people just don't order the dang firmware from Funai.
Oh well.

I have no complaint with the Emerson EWR10D4. It was a problem continuing to find the right discs but once I upgraded it isn't a problem anymore.

The discs I am currently using are the CompUSA 4x DVD-R. I think the manufacturer is FMI (whoever that is). They have worked great. I have also tried the Maxell 8x since the firmware upgrade and they worked fine.

I have run the gammut of DVD recorders and players. Cyberhome was the worst. Now I have a Panasonic DMR-ES10. Price is about $200 depending where you buy it. It will burn and read both + or - r's and writes to to -RW only. I have used blanks marked for Data or Video use and no problems. It is easy to set the timer. Stay away from the crap at Walmart as that is where I got my Cyberhome. It will not work properly with the newer higher speed blanks. For some reason I can set only one timer. Sometimes it records and it did as the blank shows it but recorder does not read it. It runs so hot I had to put a fan in it and got about a year out of it. I also have a Phillips and it still works. Uses + media only. What I like about it is you do not have to finalize RW disks. I use for recording shows I don't want to keep and play them in another player. Some recorders take forever to finalize. I am planning to replace my cyberhome with a sony to see how they do. Trying to keep confusion down on remotes. I could write a book about these things but if you want something that works spend about $200 and make sure it will read and write at least + and - r's. Haven't found one that does both + and - RW except ones for computers.

well, Gregrod after much research about it, I had the link to the correct file that everyone else said worked, so why not do it instead of waiting for Emerson to send it to me, I had some copying I needed to start right away.
Believe me I researched it before I did any upgrading because I did not want to take any chances.
I have since recorded 16 discs on 8x after the upgrade with absolutely no problems.

Absolutely no problems after updating. The tray would not close initially but that was anticipated and I was instructed to turn the power off. That remedied that. It was a very easy thing to do. I'm not sure what the problems have been but I have experienced none.

I too was a little conflicted about upgrading. I had found enough discs to keep me recording for awhile and I thought about just leaving well enough alone. But I certainly am happy with the recorder itself and with the upgrade I would have more options later. The fact is the 4x will probably be very difficult to find eventually.
I have only detected the slightest of delay with the recording start. I just make an allowance for it.
Like I said, I am very pleased with the upgrade.
The only way I would not have upgraded would be if I had plenty of 4x discs to last me until it was time to buy another recorder.

I haven't tried that. I will tonight and let you know.
That would be quite a benefit.

Do any of you folks who have done the upgrade thing have the Emerson EWR20V4?
There does not seem to be many of us with the EWR20V4.
Mine seems to work OK, but I am also stuck with the 4X syndrome. :-(

As for downloading the upgrade from the net, I just think its irresponsible, lazy and shows impatience.
Number 1: It takes 5-7 days to get a REAL upgrade from Funai. You must walk through the initial steps to make sure you have the right model for the right upgrade. Downloading a "misc. upgrade from the net" is like downloading a potential virus. You really don't know what your getting.
Number 2: Why potentially destroy your unit on a download "whim" when you can get what should work direct from the people who manufactured the unit? "You had the link that everyone else said worked? Well Funai makes what works without question. Would you walk down a dark alley just because people told you it was safe?
Well, to those who have upgraded off the net, good luck.
For those that do not know, it has been reported that after the upgrade the unit does not record immediately after you push the record button. Some units have simply fried after the upgrade. It appears that this has happened when people use the download from the net instead of getting the FREE upgrade from Funai.
As for the Comp USA 4x discs. I've used them. They do work, however, the are actually manufactured by Advance Media Limited from Hong Kong. FMI is an aka Comp USA. These discs do not create as good of a picture as say Verbatim or Maxell disc. The word is they also do not last very long. (its reported that these discs will go bad in about 1yr)

Thanks for the info on the CompUSA discs. To be honest I only used them because it was all I could get that worked and I was buying in bulk in case there were no alternatives. Forunately the upgrade has been a good experience. Where did you get your info about these discs?
The good thing about doing the upgrade "officially" is that they are right there on the phone to make sure all is well. I did not even have to do anything for them to send me the disc. They just said we will send you the disc and I never even had to look up any numbers (just the model number). I received my disc in about 5 days.
As far as the upgrade allowing you to record copyrighted material that was a no go for me. Unless of course it is on the 8x or something. I will try that soon but I cannot imagine such being the case.

The Comp Usa Discs...
I have a burner on my computer. I use DVDIdentifier to get the codes.
Then I went over to CDFreaks.com and looked through the forum under "Blank Discs".
I also did a search for "AML" on google. That's how I found the company information.
Many people over at CDFreaks rate good burns with this media, but have said within as little as 6months their burners would no longer read these discs.
About the upgrade, what you have said is why I do not know why people would download from the net. 5 days and you had support from Funai vs. an unknown download that is known to fry these units.
Aren't you glad you were patient?

Thanks... I am a collector of classic wrestling shows and I have put quite a few hours of footage on these CompUSA discs. I suppose I should re-record them to the Memorex discs I have coming.
I cannot imagine an easier experience with the upgrade. The disc arrived before I knew it. The tech on the phone was really nice. The upgrade takes all of three minutes to install.

Memorex!
These discs are to be avoided. The memorex discs are rated some of the worst discs to use in this unit. Please search this forum:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/forum_view.cfm/47
For info on Memorex discs.
Try the following: Maxell, Verbatim, Fuji, TDK. TDK's 8x are always on sale at Circuit City. Usually 7.99 for 25. At Best Buy this sunday Fuji 100 packs are on sale for 34.99. Thats 35 cents a piece.
I personally have not tried the Memorex, but to many people have had issues with them. Besides that, Funai also stated that these discs should not be used.

Saw that poll before.
Like I said Verbatim, Maxell, Moser Baer. Taiyo Yuden is good. Maxell DVD-R 4x "Made in Japan" is actually Taiyo Yuden. The majority of my burns with this recorder have been with Maxell DVD-R. They work excellent.
Next in line would be my Verbatim Digital Movie Discs DVD-R 4x. These are just as good as the Maxell (Taiyo Yuden).
My Imations I've only done a few. They look great. These are made by CMC Magnetics. Yes, the same manufacturer that people diss. My burns with this media Imation DVD-R 4x look great. You can find these at OfficeMax being blown out for 25 at 6 bucks.
