I must agree rob, I thought you knew that so I didn't respond.. :)
Of course all of my Pioneer drives have a "hacked" or "improved" f/w. :D
I'll add this too. There are a lot of people that use the DVD-R format (ZoSo included) so as not to worry about that mess. On the other hand the DVD-R format is normally cheaper than the DVD+R format in bulk (online that is). So if you're gonna use the DVD-R format there's NO worry.

well i think my HP 740i drive is dieing on me. it has been the quietest drive of all mine. the last couple of rips i have tried with it, it sounds like a helecopter starting up. louder than the fan on that coolermaster extreme power 500w PSU i had...lmao
but in it defense it still burns..lol
looks likei might have to get me 2 new sata burners and put my 18x litey in the old HP system along with my 16x once i get the big red machine going
edit

You don't need modified firmware for the 215D as there isn't any available yet anyway. Use Media Code Speed Edit to modify the official firmware yourself and then reflash the drive with DVRFlash, you can actually select the options you want i.e. riplock, rpc1, bitsetting etc. Pretty nifty tool.
I also recommend the Samsung 203B, but I don't think they are available anymore. And of course the NEC 72XX series should be back to what the old NEC drives were only newer and better.

I do believe those NEC/Sony drives are re-badged Lite On Drives. I work as a PC Tech and we sometimes use the black Lite On drives when we can't get our reliable LG drives. Those NEC's look identical in every way to the Lite On drives. I have seen the failure rate of Lite On Drives to be much higher than the LG Drives. Of course, use what works for you. Personally, I have used LG Optical Drives for years. Have yet to have one fail. LG's MTBF of 80,000 hours is pretty much gospel best I can tell.
Use The Best Media for The Best Burns! TYs, Verbs,(Made in Taiwan) Sony MIJs (YUDEN000 T02), Sony Made in Taiwan DVD+R 16x, Maxell MIJ, RITEK G05.

bunny,
I think the 7200 series are NEC chip based.
I agree on the 719X series tho.. definitely Lite-On as I have 3... Lite-On DH-20A3P drives and good ones too... been thru a lot of "test" f/w but they burn well and scan ok...

I'm not saying Lite On Drives are not good drives. I am saying from MY personal experience that I see more failed Lite On drives than LG Drives. I also submit that when the Lite On drives work, they work very well. There are many great drives on the market today. Whatever one likes & works well for them is The Best Drive for them. I will say that I personally have 4 LG drives that have well over 1000 read & write operations & they still work like they were fresh out of the box. They do like Verbatim, Sony, and Taiyo Yuden Media best. And if you do a little research, you'll find that LG recommends these media brands, especially Verbatim.

bunny,
I do see your point and from what I've read you are on the right track.... and btw I take no offense to other opinions, actually I encourage them..... of course with personal experience or something I can read to more educate myself with. :) I don't have a present burner that has more than 200 burns. lol. NOW one of my retired Pioneer drives (106D) has about 1000 burns on it but unfortunately it hasn't had a f/w update in about 4 years and WON'T recognize anything over 8x media... :( GREAT drive btw....
I have 3 LG's and love them [(2)H62K & (1)GH20NS10].... which burn just fine strait out of the box... :D
a few DVDRW's w/ FREE shipping and even an LG just for bunnyrip... :D linky
burn on!!!!

Greeny, you just had to throw in an LG Blu-Ray drive didn't you? :)
According to the freaks at Freaks the Sony/Optiarc drives such as the 51XX, 71XX etc. are Lite-On rebadges. Fortunately though NEC has had more of a hand in the newer 72XX series of drives and are not rebadged Liteys. I'm with GM on this one...to each his own, use what works best for you or what you prefer. I think LG makes excellent solid drives, but they just don't interest me....much like the Lite-On's. I just can't bring myself to purchase one and with space in my case being at a premium I've got room for two more drives. One will be an NEC and the other is yet to be determined...might be an LG or it could be a Litey. I'm also using a Samsung 203B and a Pioneer 215D and they aren't getting kicked out of my case any time soon as I love them both. I wish the new mobo would have allowed me to bring my NEC 3540A and BenQ 1655 to the new build, but it just didn't happen. I guess it was time to move on. The BenQ was getting less and less reliable but the NEC was still churning out burns like it did the first day I installed it. That is the biggest reason I'm holding my breath for a 72XX.

Pretty nice eh Rob?
I think I've been fooling myself or reading something that I didn't totally understand. Seems that the 7200, 7201 and 7203 are all the same drives, but the 7201 adds LS and the 7203 adds LF. Since I don't have a LS drive in the arsenal I'll just get the 7201. I'm not a big fan of LS, but I still have a stack of LS discs that are pretty much useless without a drive....other than just painting the pretty pictures on with my sharpie :P

LOCO don't buy anyting yet!!! :P As usual the companies are playing games with you. DON'T ever trust the "distributing" company when it comes to what's inside. :) You honestly don't know until you find the info out for yourself. I trust Videohelp wholly when it comes to identifying the "chipset" of an ODD... ;)
7200 series
7201 series
7203 series
Take a look at those LOCO and then make your decisions.... :D

I know, I found out last night after I posted what I posted. I guess for one reason or another they are rebadging the 7201 because of the LS feature. I'm not waiting on the 7203 as I don't have a use for labelflash...7200 here I come.
