Disabling it is done within the game? I'll check it out, next time im in windows 7.
On another note, 16 Hrs logged on my wireless mouse, and still going. I imagine the batts are close though :P

I learned something new too! The pipe bomb attracts the horde!!! VERY useful info. Its saved my bacon a couple times now. And apparently a FACE shot with the shotgun will take down the witch. I knew there had to be a way. I guess my other witch head shots were failures.

I had the same bug with multi-core rendering for a long time on my Phenom II rig. The only thing that fixed it was turning off Multi-Core Rendering. I lost the quad core advantage but it played perfectly. My last reformat seems to have fixed it completely though.

Sam, that is absolutely fascinating. It is more than fascinating in fact - either I am being hyper like boozer claims, or just intrigued as a normal person would be, but because I like beautiful images as do we all, I find that revelation to be incredibly impactful!!

Furthermore, although I had hoped that you could give me some insight, I am actually blown away again! How do you know all this stuff!!!

However, at core, I am not sure I completely understand. Perhaps you (and/or Jeff if he wants to contribute) could elaborate more. What do you mean, "effectively anti-aliasing" the image. I am completely fascinated, as I say, because I really can't believe the quality. I know I'm not seeing more than 1024x768 - but it looks so sharp. Miles used to talk about anti-aliasing - smoothing out the jaggies - which is what graphics cards do by sampling around each pixel. Is that what you're saying? The process of throwing out the extra pixels results in a smoothing out around each pixel?

The images are indescribably sharp, and breathtakingly gorgeous - unlike any images I have ever seen before on my smaller screens!! They are almost lifelike in some way - they have a presence that is astonishing!!

I am trying to appreciate the ramifications. That would mean, I suppose, that I should store the higher resolution version of every picture I would ever want to display on my desktop and benefit from the smoothing out process!

F**king fantastic stuff - really terrific stuff!!

THAT IS ALMOST AS SIGNIFICANT TO ME AS DISCOVERING WHAT A GREAT GAME LEFT 4 DEAD IS! Two major insights within a short time period - almost too much to take. Hahahahaha.

Now, I have to take very minor issue with you on something else. I originally started out in physics. In physics there is theoretical speculation, and then there is empirical data from running experiments, not quite the same thing of course.
Originally posted by sam:
I'm not sure I agree with your theory on weapon movespeed.
Sam, I ran an experiment and made a finding. If you do not agree with my conclusion, then tell me what was wrong with my experiment, and what other conclusion could a reasonable person come to?

L4D doesn't care which weapon you are holding as regards how fast you run is the finding I came to from my experiment (which by the way, is not true of another source game called Counter Strike.) Here's how I did the test:

Originally posted by Rich explaining his little running speed test methodology:
I opened L4D in a window, got out of the Boat Finale Advanced safehouse, and when I was not being bothered by the occasional hunter or smoker, I ran back and forth along the entire length of the street - clocking myself by the windows clock with its sweep second hand in another window. Each round trip was 27 seconds, no matter which weapon I was carrying, level 1 or level 2, down to 40 health, including hunting rifle, pistols, colt, pipe bomb, shotgun, auto shotgun - all except for level 1 uzi which was not available and was not tested.

(You are right on health. Down to 40 health it was still the same 27 seconds, but later when I was down to about 16 health it took 38 seconds, and when I had bled down to 1 health it took 69 seconds, haha.)

I ran an experiment and observed the unchanging data. You are welcome to take exception to my experimental methods. Perhaps running L4D in a window affects the speed of movement, but I don't think so. Lol.
Kevin, Left 4 Dead doesn't want you completing any Advanced sections because you're too new, which is why you got shut down, and of course the pipe bomb attracts the bastards - duhhh - that's what it's for, lol - and MY shotgun headshots didn't do sh*t to the witch on my experiment with the bots - she chased my little ass down and killed me right then and there goddammit, lol. But serially, if shotguns to the head can kill the little red-eyed bi*ch that's good to know. There is an achievement for capping a witch with a head shot - is it hunting rifle to the head - which weapon works?

Sam, on expert how did you guys take out the witch? I actually threw a propane tank at her and exploded it - that didn't seem to do shi*t!

GETTING RID OF FRIENDLY FIRE:
My god, Kevin, this is good practice: Run some Expert with the bots. If nothing else cures you of friendly fire, that will.

But what do I do, Sam and Jeff, when I am on full auto, we are all in our respective corners of the room, the horde is pouring through the door, and Francis randomly decides to wander over into my bullet stream. Is that really my fault? Goddammit Francis!!

Rich, consider a square block formation of an image. Say, a checkerboard pattern with white and black squares. Condensing an 8x8 grid to a 4x4 grid is easily done, you cut it in half, which is why exact doubles, such as 800x600->1600x1200 and 1280x800->2560x1600 look crisp, but still jagged.
Now imagine trying to adapt a 17x17 block to an 11x11 block. How would you do it? What happens is an approximation, the colour is neither black, nor white, something inbetween. This colour gradualisation in microcosm is what is applied to edges with Anti-Aliasing on the edges of textures. On a full scale it occurs when images are reduced in size (and is also part of the compression process) which is why downsizing a picture has the same effect as anti-aliasing an image.
Ultimately, due to the fine size of the pixels, an image mapped 1:1 by resolution of the image to the resolution of the screen is the best approach, but as you see, downsizing a large image has substantial benefits too. Seeing a 2560x1600 image on a 1024x768 screen is better than a 1024x768 picture on it, but if a screen the same size were actually 2560x1600 to take the picture properly, it'd look far better still.
I have not run any specific scientific tests on move speed in Left 4 Dead yet, this is merely on intuition, I will have to conduct some tests of my own.
I have also found that head-shotting the witch seems only to work with the pump shotgun of tier 1. Damage per second is higher with the Auto Shotgun, but damage per shell I believe is higher with the tier 1 weapon.
Usually, if with the auto shotgun, spamming headshots usually does the trick. You certainly shouldn't need all 10, certainly not unless on expert.
Agreed on the bots walking into friendly fire, it's infuriating. Still, they can never friendly fire you, that's something.

Multi Core Rendering - I.E. "Threaded Optimization" in the Nvidia control panel. Ive now disabled it. I'll need to keep that in mind for GTA IV, when its back on this drive. It just doesnt run the same on the XP drive :( There must a be a massive difference between Direct X 9C and 11.

Yes, its quite irritating when your teammates jump in front of you in the heat of the moment LOL! I am getting better though.

For Left 4 Dead, I actually meant the setting in game. Not sure about Thread optimisation, as it's a feature specific to nvidia drivers.

Thanks man. It was recommended from another site. I turned both off, to see how its effected. Rather curious flickering effect about a half hour ago. Seems to be fine now though.

Any tips on defeating Tank, while maintaining health amongst the crew? It would appear that EVERYONE has trouble with this beast LOL! I have had some success, with the auto-shotgun while running backwards. Is there no QUICK way to take him down?

Omegaman7,

I recommend you leave threaded optimization on Auto. Turning this setting off can have a negative impact in a lot of games and will even cause problems with Left 4 Dead. It is a separate setting from multi-core rendering and controls a different variable. Even with multi-core rendering turned off, L4D still takes advantage a multi-core CPU for background loading and AI. You can leave threaded optimization off if you want but the performance will be affected even more.

Maybe I am beginning to understand a bit. I have my laptop sitting next to me as I type on the desktop. The sixty 30" dell photos are cycling through the webshots screensaver every 20 seconds. Each one is a jewel. (I have several shots of Victoria, Canada. Wow! I just listened to a Norman Vincent Peale series on positive thinking, and he mentioned that the three most beautiful cities in the world were said to be Constantinople, San Francisco, and Victoria.) I really appreciate your attempt to help me understand why they look so good - I knew there had to be an explanation - thanks!

Regarding tank:
Originally posted by Sam:

And if you can molotov the ugly bastard he will die with no shooting, isn't that correct? But the team has to run like hell for about 40 seconds until he "bleeds out" I have heard.
Originally posted by Rich's million dollar gaming idea:

I'm gonna invent a usb smell mixer machine so we can take these games to a new level, lol! It will feature 16.7 million smells, with 256 choices each of RGB: Roses, Garlic, and Burning!

Nice work by the way, Kevin, on backward running with auto shotgun - you're getting too good, too fast!

Regarding witch:
Yes I have seen a guy do it with auto shottie, although he DID get knocked down, and the rest of the team had to finish her off. What about the hunting rifle? (Since the hunting rifle shoots virtually as fast as a pistol, I would imagine one could get at least 3 rounds in her - one in the face, maybe two in the face if lucky. For close range, do you guys consider the auto shotgun more powerful than the hunting rifle?) In your Expert experience, Sam, with the whole team grouped around her, is it ever possible to kill her without somebody getting knocked down?

I DID notice that the bots can't do friendly fire - their gun just turns off - that's helpful, lol! (So they've wandered into your bullet stream too, hahaha!)

Originally posted by Kevin, wondering if the game is holding him back:

Hell no! LOL

Keith, glad you too are enjoying L4D. Big Rigs sounds like the old Monster Truck Madness, which was kind of a lark at the time! Sam and Jeff's negative comments just show that not everybody has the same taste in video games, haha. Or maybe they don't own a hummer like you do!

Hey, I'm back to our discussion about movespeed - but from another angle. I have some questions about the zombies. First, the tank. I thought that if you had full life, you could outrun a tank. Is that true, or is that not true? I seem to be getting some pretty nimble tanks lately - like "how they hell did he catch up to me just now?" On a similar note, do zombies outrun us? And does the witch outrun us?

Rich

Eventually yes, but as you say, it takes a while. Use a molotov AND focus fire on the tank, it's no obstacle, regardless of difficulty.
Lol at the smell machine, for some unknown reason, even though most games cover environments that stink to high heaven, I'd still love a smell machine for games, especially to use just for ambient scents that nobody would dream of producing air fresheners for.
I've never had any success with the hunting rifle against the witch.
Rich, There's a difference between not being interested in a game's premise, and not being interested in a game because it isn't any good. Games like Big Rigs sadly fall into the latter category.
If you are on full life, you CAN outrun the tank, at least up to Advanced. I am not sure about expert. As far as I'm aware you can't ultimately outrun the witch, but you can gain significant distance before she gets you.
40HP or less though, even on easy you're screwed.

LOL! Totally circumstantial. The area was a VERY good candidate. I even got lucky just a few minutes ago. I got cornered against a wall, and he(TANK) couldn't seem to hurt me. I was blasting away at him with the auto Shotgun, and watching my health remain the same. It was as though he was hitting the wall, and not me. But another attempt to recreate the occurrence failed. Went and saw "Star Trek" (AKA Star Trek XI)last night. VERY awesome! It felt rather new. It didnt have...that...style that it once had. Im not sure how to explain it. However...even though it was NEW, I liked it a great deal.
That, and all the Left 4 Dead ive been playing, resulted in the most VIVID dream ive had in a LONG time! I urge anyone who hasn't seen the movie, to go see it. Keep an open mind, and you'll enjoy it as much or more than I did :D If they dont continue on into another GREAT series or yet another sequel...I'LL DIE!!! LOL!

We are totally happy, Kevin. (Let's see, now that I've taught you how to get addicted, how can I can make some money off it.) Ah Kevin, I've got this stuff - it's even better - called "crack" haha. It's cheap. Just $100. Sound good???
Originally posted by Kevin also known as "tank buster":

Hmmmm. A map glitch - yeah - I was telling Sam about the same thing that happened in the prison before I learned to kill the ant lion king with lavatory sinks. I was in some kind of corner blasting away and his head butts didn't do jack! Well, if the tank didn't have you pinned underneath him, which the first blow would have accomplished, then tell me where that spot is - I'll try it! LOL

Speaking of our friend the tank (yes, sam, it was on expert - single player - that I was suddenly tank bait and I seem to recall that I was sprinting with at least 80 life) now that I know how to climb the infamous rock (by leaping one foot early) I have discovered not to be too complacent up there on expert - the tank is a miraculously gifted concrete tosser - from 30 yards. I tried to dodge - I wonder if ducking works. There is not a lot of maneuver room on top of that rock.

Originally posted by rich completely off topic:
Hey guys, this is really off the wall, but have you guys ever heard the word "sh*t" used in a major top ten rock song? I can't say that I have. I am right now listening to that old Alicia Keyes song "A Woman's Worth" - media player is running it over and over again. Very nice song, and I saw the excellent video a long time ago. But I can't believe my ears - in this one part she actually says "If you never play me ... promise not to bluff... I'll hold you down when shit gets rough." LOL
Sam, you like my smell machine idea! Great! I smell $10 million dollars in profits, lol. What would a crazy totally addicted gamer like Kevin pay for that USB add-on? The $100 I was trying to get for the crack? Hahaha. Let's see, reasonably-priced replaceable odor canisters, external power source, micro-precision jets, adjustable "volume" control (do we stink up just our corner of the room, or the entire house) and variable pre-sets, like Paki mode, for those who like everything with the scent of Shisha, and Hong Kong, where soy must be present on all occasions! The most advanced version has several 230cm coolmaster silent blowers that rev up on change of environment to quickly remove the first "stink" and slip in the new ambiance.

I'm sure we'll see it in 10 years (not really THAT sure.) Now that it's been posted - it is floating around in the "ether." When it comes out, and I discover that Sam Morris is the inventor, I want my cut. LOL

Re: The music, I'm certain I have, and others, but whenever they are played they are usually edited versions.
As for the smell machine idea, kind of what I had in mind, but via a high pressure compressed air system, rather than using fans or gas propellants. I envisaged some form of inexpensive liquid capable of 'activating' scents to become more pronounced when used with a small amount of the component fragrance, which would undoubtedly be expensive to produce very accurately.

Rotting flesh, burning electronics, and human excrement :D

I could see separate canister sets for each game that supports them. Like a Crysis package(salty sea air, rotting plant matter, gun powder), a Dead Space package(rotting flesh, stale air, sewage), a GRiD package(motor oil, burning rubber, gasoline).

Not like a constant smell but a little spray here and there wherever it applies.
