OK, I want to use bittorrent in my mom's office to download GTASA. She has a guest account on her computer and has access to the network (which is super fast) however the b**chy network administrator has almost everything on my mom's computer on lockdown. No P2P or any sort of incoming connections are allowed. Will I be able to use bittorrent there still?

It really depends on how tight the network actually is. In my office we are quite lax with security issue's. I am able to see al MSN chat files, and will not let people install stuff willy nilly.

But we are using an Aramiska Arc,on a 4mb connection thru a satelite, BUT, they will not allow any P2P stuff at all. No Kazaa, No Shareaza. All the PORTS on the firewall are controlled by them.

But the trick we do is, the ARC goes from a ADSL modem, into a router then onto our network, so we but another Vigor Router between the modem and the other router and connect 2 machines to the Vigor router and that machine lets us access Bit Torrent Stuff, we use BitComet and Azereus.

OK, i'll pretend I understood what you just said... but thanks for the help anyways. If I can't use Bittorrent at the office, I'll see if I can get my friend to download the file for me.

hey, I'm new to this forum thing. I was wondering. I'm having trouble downloading anything that's not insanely slow. I've been at this one for like a week now, and it's only at 14% done. is there anything I can do to speed it up? and I have no idea what ports even are, so if someone could give me some pointers... I'd love them forever, lol.

I didn't take time to read all eighteen pages of this thread, but what is legal as far as P2P networks and what isn't. Is it only illegal to use copyrighted stuff on these networks. Thanks.

As far as P2P goes the actuall distribution of stuff between people, where only one of them (or neither of them) have the copyright holders permission is illegal. Essentially I cant give you stuff, and you cant give me stuff if we dont own the copyright, so you cant give me software or movies and I cant give it to you.

Torrent Sharing, is also illegal, but harder to detect, as essentially you are not actually getting a file off a person, you are getting bits off various people, this means it is harder to catch other people.

The networks are getting the blame, but if you read the piratebay.org it has loads of stuff about the legality of all of this.

If you visit www.mikeysoft.info and read my disclaimer there are lots of sites that will advise on what is legal and what is not.

I noticed that hundreds of questions about BitTorrent speed were posted and in order for new users to understand what is really going on, they ought to gather answers from here and there. Therefore, I decided to be more helpful by posting the following hints that I am pretty much sure will cover almost all of your repeated questions. You all are free to ask others asking same questions to refer to this one.

First of all, ya all should understand that BitTorrent is a tool to share files between users also called PEERs and not to download archived files from a website.

What is the concept behind BitTorrent?
The concept behind the BitTorrent is that people directly connect to each others and download/upload a certain file data at the same time. It?s a 2-way circuit. For example consider yourself sitting among 5 others talking about ONE TOPIC, let?s say World War II, you say whatever information you have and the other 4 will each say whatever information they have. Each one in the group is receiving and providing information at the same time yet the TOPIC is still the same.. WWII. Now another new member joins the circle, he has no information to provide, that member would start receiving information and after a while another 2 or 3 new members join and start doing the same thing and at that time the 6th member moved from only receiving information to also providing information to the new 2 or 3 members just like the others and so one but again the topic is still the same. I don?t think there is much easier way to explain it :)

What is SEED and LEESH?
Back to above example. When you are providing information, uploading, then you are considered a SEED. When you are receiving information, downloading, then you are considered as a LEESH.
Very simple, if a file is popular and highly required, there will be a lot of both SEEDs and LEESHes, sharing the upload of the same file gradually, in most cases, SEEDs will be less than LEESHes. The file data is 2-way distributed on the internet among all SEEDs and LEESHes. It is not only one file, it is the same but in number of copies.

Now to the most annoying question. Why is it SO DARN Slow????

2 main reasons.

Reason 1 (Problems in configuration):
Bittorent and similar applications are in a way or another and not in all cases, sensitive to firewalls. Also Bittorent (new versions) automatically use more than one port. You can set the ports on your Bittorent or other application using it a core, starting from 6881 to 6999 (default i guess)however Some ISPs are limiting download speeds by controlling the bandwidth allocated to traffic using the default BitTorrent ports, which are 6881 to 6999.

This is not just a problem for those who have nasty ISPs, it affects everybody. To avoid ISPs from damaging the efficiency of a torrent with their controls, some stringent tracker owners are blocking users trying to connect on the standard ports.

So whether your ISP is limiting you or not, all BitTorrent users should stop using the default ports. Already defaults to port 10000 to avoid this problem.

For simplicity, the use of ports 16881 ? 16999 is recommended. Adding a 1 to the start is simple administratively, and is in a range unlikely to be used by other programs.

But that is not it yet. if you are on a router, you need to do something very simple. In every router setup there is something called Forwarded Ports. There, you need to set the same start/end ports, and that is how you make your router unblock them and/or brings the date right from the external IP address to the internal one without bottle neck.
(After I did this, my speed increased up to 15 to 20 kbs on a 512/kbs DSL.)

Now the last thing you need to do and which is the most common bottleneck to your speed is what is called DMZ (demilitarized zone). Do this only if you were behind a router. But CAUTION, I know that many people who have digitalphobia make a big issue and exaggerate while talking about DMZ yet it is not that harmful only if you are sure enough that you have a strong up-to-date antivirus and worm protection such as Norton or similar. Hihiiii believe it or not, the moment I got myself on DMZ, my download rate reached 55kb/s on a 512/kbs DSL. My Yet-ABC went from light green to dark green showing 100% successful work although the number of LEESH was higher than the number of SEED :) You can learn more at this place http://www.portforward.com/help.htm about the above stuff.

Reason 2 (If Reason 1 is not applicable or already set):
Very easy, have you ever tried to download a file where the number of LEESH is smaller than the number of SEED by at least 10 to 20%???? Try that and figure it out yourself.. Cool heh? ;)
Yes, if the number of LEESH is higher, then my dear, you are not the only one waiting for days to finish the download, all the others are as well except for the ones who are appreciated and rated. This is 100% true. BitTorrent works on a credit system. By uploading parts of a file other people, they allow you to download parts of the file from them. This is BitTorrent anti-leech measure. However, if you have a problem with your NAT (anything between you and the internet, such as a router or firewall), you will not get credit for what you are uploading. The only downloading that you can do is from people who upload a small amount to you in the hope that you will return the favor. Since their client will not recognize your response if you have a NAT problem, then they will stop uploading to you shortly after. This is what is causing your problem. You may also notice that torrent speeds go very high for 5mins, before slowing back down to 0-5kb/s. The problem is with the so many morons out there who keep their upload to the minimum and thanks to tracers; they are being recorded and banned now a days.

Don?t like BitTorrent?
BitTorrent is somehow very simple and briefed. There are other applications that use BitTorrent as a core but added more options and friendly interface such as Azureus or Yet ABC.
Azureus or Yet ABC are highly recommended. (For those using BitTornado - ABC uses the BitTornado core, but has a queuing system for better control of multiple torrents). Azureus requires Java. If after installation the application will not load, it is because you do not have Java. You are not the first to think you have Java when you do not! More information is available on the Azureus site.

Hope you all understand why it is slow now and stop whining about it and have some patience and digital generosity ;) :P

hey guys, wassupp

i have a question, i have a cable connection and it flies on newsgroups and shit like that, but most of the times that ive download off torrent sites my downloads are RARELY as fast as my connection is , usually 50kb/s or like 100kb/s and 100kb/s is RARE also. My speed is like 550kb/s, so this is not good.

Now to my question, you guys know that when u download a torrent it automatically opens up a program in which u have associated with these torrent files. Can u dudes tell me what programs u guys use and also works really fast. I use Shareaza and if speed equals quality well then Shareaza sucks big monkey nuts cuz i never go over 100kb/s with ANY file. Can u guys let me know what program to downloads torrents with are really good (good meaning fast i guess ;) It sucks cuz its cutting my speed by like 60% and thats not good...

thanks guyss lemmeee knoww

I use Bit Tornado: BitTornado.com/" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.BitTornado.com/
Wehn it comes to download speeds, in addition to a fast connection on your part seeds of the torrent, quality of the connection of the seeders, ports openned and forwarded properly to name a few all play a role.
