Hey guys I just thought I would say somethings.
One, I HIGHLY recommend you get PeerGuardian 2 from Phoenix Labs (http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/)
It NEVER uses more then 1% CPU and blocks all connections in and out of your computer if they are on the "filter" list. By default it blocks 'bad' sites as well. Basically anything that collects info you don't want collected. However, if you need to go to one of these sites, you can disable the HTTP blocking.
Make sure that your blacklists are updated EVERY day (at least once per day!) Methlabs moved to phoenixlabs but, the blacklists come from peerguardian.sourceforge.net. If you get PG2 make SURE the lists are coming from there. If they are not you may get in trouble!
Personal example: I downloaded Doom 3 (I know its kind of old!!) about a week ago and PeerGuardian 2 along with SafePeer blocked TONS of connections from the bad places.
Peace,
Pop Smith
P.S. NEVER use the default ports for BT! MOST (99%) of the ISPs out there will scan those IPs with port scanners to make sure your not running Bit Torrent. Use ports 50,000+ ONLY for incoming AND outgoing.

Yes, i agree with Pop_Smith. I have used peeguardian for awhile now and it is great. It also when googling for something, and you try a site it blocks you from accessing it..... when this happens i stay away from the site unless its a well know one :)

Hey hows it going? I'm a Noob, so I'll start by saying hi.
Figure I'd better contribute something, so my favourite bittorrent application is currently Utorrent - http://www.utorrent.com. I used to be a big Azureus fan, but my lowly laptop with 256mb of RAM used to choke and die everytime I loaded it up. Utorrent takes a while to connect to peers, but CPU/RAM usage is low and it speeds up after a while.
With regards to the enquiry above, about the file being split up, chances are you have a load of little *.rar files, simply download and install the appropriate extractor (try searching google for winrar), then extract the first numbered file, it'll do the rest for you.
See you later, Newbie Callum.

Right here it goes....
I am in the uk and my isp is tiscali, i have the 2 mbps broadband package with the speedtouch 330 modem, which has a usb wire that connects to my computer and a phoneline wire which connects into a filter, then into my phoneline box. I use Limewire for filesharing and Azureus for bit torrent files. Whenever i use limewire no matter what file size i always get my full speed of 250 kbps, but when i use Azureus (and other BT clients) if im downloading a small file size eg. 50mb i get my full speed but if im downloading a large file size eg. 200mb i get speeds of 30 kbps. I am using the port 6882 and have done the NAT/Firewall test on Azureus and it says the ports OK. I do not use windows firewall but i do use norton internet security 2006 with that firewall on. by the way my speed problem does not change if a turn off norton internet securitys firewall and my windows updates and downloads off internet explorer go at full speed aswel.

hey shaun_69
you need to change your port number , using azureus go to
tools>options there you will see your port number in highlighted writing it should say Good port choices choose this and you will be directed to
the ports you should use .
I use 49152 personally my dl speeds can reack as much as 700 to 800 kb/s using 3mb ntl cable (in process of upgrading to 10mb ntl might
have started this already)
hope this helps

Ok so I read the reply about PG2. I'm interested in switching from azurues to PG2. I'm just confused about it blocking sites. So what do you mean by that it blocks bad sites? like sites with viruses or bull s*!! files. Can someone explain this to me. And does it give better kb/s speed. I have switched my port on Azureus too and its still not very fast. I've only seen it max at 55kb/s. My laptop max is around 110kb/s. My desktop is way more powerful than my laptop so I was just wondering if PG2 would help out with speed a little. And what kind of info does azurues collect???

pg2 is not a bt client , it just blocks ips that are bad
portwise i use 49152 but generally anthing above 50.000 is pretty good
@napster81
anthing above 50.000 should be ok

I went on options to change my port and i could not find the option where it recommends good ports but anyway i changed my port number to the same as yours and i had no luck :( . im starting to think prehaps its because i can download at 250kbps but i can only upload at 25kbps according to the speed test. can anyone confirm is that the reason i dont get speed much above 50kbps, is it because i cannot upload fast ?

@shaun_69
its not really a speed issue , you've just got to get a torrent that has a good seed to leech ratio
and files over 500mb usually take up to 30mins to achieve maximum speed
try not to download more than 2 torrents at a time and keep your seeding to about 2 to every 2 download , this is what i do and have no trouble keeping a 1.996 ratio average (i dont upload yet)

ive been downloading this 3.5gb file allnight and after 12 hours im still getin the same speed as i did 15 minutes into the download which is a very poor 35kbps. its a popular file i think there are 60 peers and 15 seeds which isnt bad. i think its a complicated problem why my speed is not being achieved to 250kbps so i might have to put up with it :'( . my speed only reaches 35kbps if i put the maximen up speed to 15kbps if i put the up speed any higher or lower my downspeed drops.

Hey there guys,
I was wondering if you could help me out...
Firstly .. what is the best bit torrent program to use..
Secondly... how do I configure it so that I can download through my network.. my partner has the internet connection and it doesn't matter which program I use none of them work... I have tried to configure it to port 6882... but that doens't seem to work.. I have tried a few other ports but again they don't work... I have also asked my partner to configure the ports for me on his computer... but that does work either...
If any of you have any advice to offer that would be very much appreciated.

i personally use Azureus but its been known to be a resource hog
as for ports try using anything above 50.000 , 6881 is blacklisted by your isp so you will get extremely slow downloads , i use 49152 it seems to work ok all the time

@Rasabah
remember to allow the port numbe in your firewall exceptions list
then it should be ok , test your port number through your bt client and it will tell you if its ok ,
remember also that 500mb files plus can sometimes take up to 30mins to achieve maximum speed

I just installed PG2 and when I click allow or block http it doesn't do anything...I can still access the net. Is it supposed to do anything else??? and also what is this program so good for. I'm not knocking the program i've just heard that is good to use but I don't see any reason to use it yet.

you will notice if you pick http blocked you cannot access certain websites , when set to allow you can access everything ,
what the program does is protect you from record companies , movie companies, basically every company that wants to catch p2p sharers/distrubutors/downloaders .
iwould recommend that anyone who uses p2p in any way uses peer guardian 2 otherwise you could be set for a lawsuit against you from major record/movie execs and we dont really want that do we ?
use p2p software without pg2 at your own risk !!
just my 2pence worth

Does anyone know about setting up Azureus through a network?
I have added the port that celticfc1 speciified and allowed it through my firewall....
Do I need to get the person with the internet to allow it through their firewall?
What is a NAT Error?
Is there anything else I need to know?
Thank you very much for your help in advance.

a NAT error is basically firewall trouble , you have to allow the port through your firewall,
(note : if you are using a work connection (network) then chances are the network admin have it locked up and theres no way round this ,
if its a home net work using a router you need to forward the port number , this link should help
