You also forget that microsoft was running alot of games in HD on normal DVD discs. Some of the games go up to 720p. One more jump to 1080i couldnt use 15 GB.

so most people think how are we going to be making games that could take up an entire blu-ray disc. well in the ps one era who thought that in a few years we would have games of 6+gb compared to the 600mb of then, thats a ten times increase ye?

mkaseatbg: "a console that will not be named on this thread"
Thank you for reading my post and respecting it.
monkijin: "probably be a 10 gig game and the rest will be filled with copy protectionns/corrupted data just to stop piracy IMHO so it doesn,t justify the extra capacity on the disc."
I hadn't thought of that...But now that you bring it up, that would be a great oppurtunity. Look what happened when people couldn't fill up a PS2 DVD with a game, the filled up the rest with dummy files to prevent piracy. This would work great for say, a 30GB dummy file lol
JoshLogan: "You all are forgetting that 50gigs is for dual-layered blu-ray discs."
I did not forget, but this is true.
ozzy1: "so most people think how are we going to be making games that could take up an entire blu-ray disc. well in the ps one era who thought that in a few years we would have games of 6+gb compared to the 600mb of then, thats a ten times increase ye?"
This brings up an interesting point. We have already transferred from maximum of 700MB(I think is the size of a CD?) up to maximum of ~4700MB(DVD). Not only that, but then to DL, ~9400MB(DVD9). This is an increase by about 1300%. We are not asking for 1300% this time, ~9400MB -> ~51200MB is only ~500%. These are all approximations(That is what I mean by the ~'s), but you can defianetly see what I am saying, can't you? If we could go to 13 times as much data, we can go to 5 times as much, I think. I do realize, however, that technology has its limits...Thus the open discussion and open debate to anything I say. ;)

The jump from 700 MB to 8.5 GB (dual layer DVD is 8.5 GB not 9.4 GB...just doesnt seem to make sense does it?) was approximatly 7.5 GB. Now you are asking for a jump from 8.5 GB to 50 GB??? Tbats almost 42 GB, roughly 6x the amount we jumped from last system. Now do you see why I believe its not practical to use 50 GB discs? If they increase the same amount this time, we are looking at 14-18 GB games. Now thats math! :)

ummm you are adding/subtracting when you should be multiplying/dividing. the guy above you was right. the percent increase would be much less this time around. maybe the actual amount of space is more, but that should be obvious.
8.5GB(roughly 8500MB) divided by 700MB = about 12.14
50GB divided by 8.5GB = about 5.88
The PS1 to PS2 is more than double the increase of PS2 to PS3. So, it shouldn't be that hard to believe...

Dude, I'm showing the amount of the jump from last system to this system, which was 7.5 GB, and then compared it to the next system, which is supposed to be 42 GB. Most likely its not going to increase by the percent, or else we are going to be looking at 600 GB games with the PS4, which is even less realistic that 50 GB games.

well obvoiusly ,sonys not going to spend a million dollar just doing nothing there going to find new ways to make there system beter by making disc bigger and bigger and bigger, but i think the ps4 will be smart and have a harddrive and the onlu way u can but data in is by a store , witch leads to a wire that transfers game data

OK, Look. I said all of this stuff in terms of percent increase and the like becuase it IS practical. Think about it, it's like a function. Like one half of a parabola, you see what I'm saying? The sizes will start rising slowly at first, as they did from PS1 to PS2. Now is the next step, it will be much more comparitively in data size, but not in the manipulation of the data. What I mean by manipulation is taking that original 700 MB and blowing it up so to speak to take up a DVD. As for the DVD disc size, that was a guesstimation, as were the rest of my data. However, I said approximately, and my data and reasoning still stand.

Also something to think about
the read and write rates are
not the same as dvd.
Normal Dvd Rate
1x = 1.32 MB/s
2x = 2.62 MB/s
2.4x = 3.17 MB/s
4x = 5.28 MB/s
6x = 7.93 MB/s
8x = 10.57 MB/s
12x = 15.85 MB/s
16x = 21.13 MB/s
Blu-ray format
1x = 36 MB/s
2x = 72 MB/s
There is a guestimating
that 8x will be 288 MB/s
and that 12x will be about
400 MB/s
When you compare this rate
to current dvd rates 1x will
be faster then 16x dvd.
Which makes it alot easier to
burn the sucker even for those
bigger files.
The speed for blu-ray was obtained
off the blu-ray official faq.

Sony's Blu-Ray is going to fail and here's why. MS and Intel are going HD DVD. Which is kinda conflicting because HP, Apple, Dell they've decided to back SOny and Blu-Ray. But that doesn't matter because Comp. manufacturers have to do pretty much everything Intel wants them to do because they can only work with what Intel makes availible to them.

SOny has incorperated Blu-Ray into the PS3 as a way of forcing everyone to use Blu-Ray. Kind of like how certain companys forced people to use VHS which in turn made bettamax obsolete. MS however hasn't done anything like that with the X-Box. They don't even have clear plans to put it into later versions of the X-Box.

Glitched I don't think you read my other post. MS isn't supporting Blu Ray. They're supporting HD DVD. Which is almost exactly the same as BluRay. When I said MS hasn't done anything like that with X-Box I meant they haven't incorperated HD DVD into the X-Box. I think MS does think they need it.

Quote: OK...Why do you bring up this thing about burn speed and burner cost? Just curious...As for downloading a Blu-Ray disc, who said anything about that? Also, Blu-Ray discs are not 60GB, and just for your info, 1000GB should be 1TB.
Technically, 1024 GB is 1 Terabyte, not 1000 GB.

Spring 2006
So im guessing April.
This following a is a brief picture of
a bd writer with dvd writing capability 2x (72MB/s)
This is also a picture of hd dvd media.
I will quote one thing that blu-ray said
Quote: Please note that this HD-DVD drive is for playback only (not a HD-DVD writer).
For more pictures of blu-ray and hd dvd products that
were at (IFA) 2005 please follow this link.
