OK...I would like to point out that I would really appreciate it if the people of the AD forums did not turn this into another one of those PS3/XBOX360 threads. I was just going to have a discussion on Sony's decision to use Blu-Ray discs. I think it is a wonderful idea, unlike many statements I have read. The Blu-Ray discs can hold much more, but here is teh part I would like to discuss. Everyone is talking about going HD, and I beleive I will be one of the people who are left behind from the HD revolution, if it occurs. It took years to build up my current set-up, and recently, I copied a DVD-9 movie to a DVD-5 disc. I took out approx. half of the data of the movie itself, and when I watched it, there was no notable difference. Well, there was one...No pause when switching from the first to second layer. And it's not like I am watching it on a little 5 inch TV or something...I have a 60". I know its not the biggest they make, I wasn't bragging lol. Anyways, with all of this space, it seems to me like they will just be filling it with filler material. Same game, more graphics. I would like to see an RPG (which Sony has become famous for) that would take up this whole disc, it would be so immense. Of course, by the time you could build and release such a game, the market would have moved on. But, if they could compile such a thing...It would be so sweet.

few good points, but seriously it would take one MUTHA F##ker of a long time to fill one of those entire disks. im guesssing like 7-10 years. whoa, little 2 much that.
Don't judge the consoles by specs, more isnt always better, espec in PS3 specs.i know the truth, ask if u wanna know.......

7-10 years? How so?
I think maybe at the current rate it might take that long, but seriously...Technology is getting faster, time to market is getting faster, etc. It seems like programmers and tech's need to find a way to keep up. Why have everything go so fast if we can't keep up? I think they can write the story, and build the base of the game up at the same time. Once they get the first part of the story done and the core of the game built, they can begin programming the beginning of the game. They program it as the story gets finished. At the same time, they need to get all the audio done, which requires another team. I'm not saying they need to take up 100% of the disc, I'm just saying...They could make a game so immense! It would be like never ending! To beat this game would be a true acheivement. I think this is exactly what Sony needs to make their PS3 successful. They need to create a sub division specifically for this one game. This would cost so much to them, but as a sub division of Sony, only Sony could distribute the game! If a game that vast was released on only one system and people started realizing how perfect it was, PS3 sales would spike like no other.

O.k it wouldnt take 7-10 years maybe like a month or so denpending on your computer, and your rite technology is going fast, I d like to point out to you people that a blu ray burner cost 2500$$ and its disc are frekin 60gigs and it would take a long tiome to download.By the time ps3 gets realsed im hopping that the blu ray burner gets a lot cheaper, technology advances like mad so we can have more hard drive space like 1000gigs and perhaps highspeed going 100x faster.

OK...Why do you bring up this thing about burn speed and burner cost? Just curious...As for downloading a Blu-Ray disc, who said anything about that? Also, Blu-Ray discs are not 60GB, and just for your info, 1000GB should be 1TB.

I personally think its a bad idea.
+ Tons of space for games, etc.
+ You get a cheap Blu-ray DVD player.
- Honestly, who is going to make a 50 GB game.
- Price. It costs alot more for both the reader and the discs.
- Loading times are going to be worse with any type of new technology, blu-ray included. If someone ever does fill up a disc, it will take too long to load it all.

Whats the cheapest u could find
People make 50 gig games so it would look super good and get tones of money
Loading times will be the same becasue technology advances

Im not saying why wouldnt someone want to, Im saying its not practical. It would just take too much time to fill up a 50GB disc with one game.

Sure technology advances. Bluray will come out with 2x (or 4x if you are comparing to DVD) but in the time it takes bluray to go to 4x, DVDs will go to 24+. Just because a new media is introduced dosnt mean older media will stop advancing.

I think if rockstar had a choice to make san andreas bigger they would have made it at least 12-15 gigs, and now the games that come out like halo and racing games like gran turismo will have way more cars and details to guns and shit

Exactly my point. Why allow for 50 if its never gonna be used. Thats why I prefer HD-DVDs that will be used on a console that will not be named on this thread for fear of closure! ;)

yes razer u were right about you said at the beginning of your post about what i said. i forgot about the tech advance of game developers.
but 50GB min for blu-ray will still take a dam long time.
what i said at first, well i relayed that off a game i have.
Its hidden and dangerous 2 and it took 4 years to make and its 2.5GB.
50GB = 2 long even with better tech. it will take a long long time before they can make 50GB games in 4 years. thats like 10 generations ahead, seriously.
ps. the time spacing between 1 gen and the next one up is about the same size gap between the 6800 Ultra being released and the 7800GTX being released. times that by 10 and u got a long time indeed.

I dont think thats 10 years , why do you think the ps3 is going to cost so much to get...were looking at 700-800$ the money is mostly for the system to play blu ray. I think the first year of realease they will use dl(is ps3 cabable of dual layer) and then in the following years more and more companies will start making the game quality super and make around 20-30 gigs and just maybe they will have some games witch actually reaches 40-45 gigs

well i live in england but over £300 is a lot.
£1 = $1.80 US.
300 x 1.8 = $540 min for a PS3, IF the conversion is correct, it may cost more or less over there i dont know.
and i dont know the transfer rate between pounds and CAN dollars.
about the game sizes. well we wil just have to wait and see.
IF they can achieve that then thats good as we will know that tech has really come a long way over the last 10 years. be proud of what we have accomplished.......

probably be a 10 gig game and the rest will be filled with copy protectionns/corrupted data just to stop piracy IMHO so it doesn,t justify the extra capacity on the disc.
would love to be proved wrong but i am a bit scepticle.
it is true that great games take years to develop look at the gta series and my personal favourites granturismo series which i have completed all 100%.
how long will i be waiting for GT

Monkijin- the next granturismo is granturismo vision it looks supper good and it has 16 racers at once unlike gt4 which had 6 maximun.HEy actually you maybe rite ps3 makes all the rest off the space copy protection so no one can rip it or play with a mod+ games will me 49gigs max becasue with that much data you need space for writing on the files

i can,t wait realy.
i am an oldish git but i have played all car or motor related games on all platforms but GT is the daddy in my opinion.
i can understand the need for copy protections and the like but even with recent technology and the time it takes to make and debug a game for sale the time factor is quite long so why should people think it would be quicker to develope.

You all are forgetting that 50gigs is for dual-layered blu-ray discs. I seriously doubt we will be seeing any games using those for a long time. Single layer BD discs are 25gigs, which is much more practical, and I believe they will definitely use the space. You guys don't realize how much space high-definition video is going to take up... Personally, I'd prefer bigger and more detailed games instead of HD, but oh well.
Eh... If I ever end up getting any HD screen to play with, it will most likely be a computer monitor and not a TV. It would be much cheaper that way...
Anyways, I'm definitely excited about the PS3. This shit needs to hurry up. Haha. :)
