grazyc: well, if you replaced the whole assembly and both the old and new have the same problem, it's most likely a controller board issue. The new laser assemblies come with the laser aligned, so there's no adjustments that would need to be made. If the laser assembly that I got wouldn't have fixed the issue, the next thing that I was going to try was replacing the BD7956FS IC ( http://www.psxboy.com/853_PS3-Driver-IC-BD7956FS.html ) on the controller board. This seems to usually be the problem when it isn't the laser from my research. You'll have to be good with heat gun soldering to swap this chip though. Best of luck with your PS3!

co worker and I bought MGS4 bundle on release, on last firmware upgrade my works fine, his bluray stopped reading disks...Futureshop is gonna call him this week when they gt new mgs4 bundle stock. food for thought. it could be firmware messing with you.

PsiLizard: Thanks for the info.
I have read that control boards are locked to the main board is this true?
If I get the replacement chip and get it into the board ok does thisg et around the board locking issue?
Do you know if there is anyway to check if the laser is actually lighting, does this chip control that?
Do you know what the loading icon on the xmb means as I don't ever get it?

PsiLizard what is the difference between the KES-400AAA and the KES-400A? I have a 60GB PS3 and it's confusing me on what I need! My PS3 is doing the same thing yours was! Is one easier to put in or are they for different size systems?

Chase84: the difference is that the KEM-400AAA is a drive assembly, meaning the laser, the drive rails, and the spindle motor, basically the whole set of moving parts in the drive with the optic. The KES-400A is just the optical lens/laser assembly itself. When you buy the KEM-400AAA, it comes with the KES-400A already put together and aligned perfectly. The KEM-400AAA is your best bet, it's only 4 screws to put it in, plug in the cables, and you're done.
Grazyc: There are a lot of sources out there that claim the controller board is locked to the console. When I was looking into this before, I found a post on xboxhacker that implied that instead of the controller boards being keyed, each with it's own unique identifier, they were tied by revision. I consider this as unverified, as I haven't seen it on any other source, but it's claimed that as long as the controller boards are the same revision, they are swappable. If this is true, the controller boards are most likely locked by firmware. If you can find a controller board of a similar system, manufactured within the same month or 2, you might be able to swap it. Either way, that IC that I linked you to is independent of the drive's firmware, it controls the laser and motors. So if the problem is with the board, it's usually an issue with this IC, you can replace just this chip without running into any board lock issues. As for if the laser is lighting up, remove the top cover of the drive, and leave out any disks. As soon as you turn on the PS3, you will be able to easily see if the laser is lighting up or not. The loading icon on the xmb basically means that there is a disk detected, and the system is attempting to read it.

Thanks for the reply PsiLizard! But now I have another problem! I took my PS3 apart last night to try to clean the lens to see if that would help but when I took the drive out and opened it up I had left a game in the system! I know D.A. right! But I went ahead and took the drive apart and got the game out and when I did the little gears on one of the covers of the drive kinda made a popping sound. Nothing broke but when I put everything back together the drive would not take a disc and when I push eject it makes a popping noise. Is there any advice on how to put the covers of the drive back on properly? And it's the black covers not the silver metal ones, where you take the middle spinning magnet out! Plz help!

Ya, you run into some issues if you take the drive apart with a disk still in it. When you put the top cover back onto the drive, the cover is in it's fully ejected position. If the rest of the drive is not ejected, then nothing lines up, and you just can't put a disk in. It's taken me a couple tries sometimes to get everything lined up again. Here's what should work, assuming that nothing was damaged in the drive. Keep the black cover off of the drive, boot up your ps3 by pressing eject, sometimes it doesn't eject the first time, keep pressing it and it should. You should be able to tell fairly easily by looking at it if the drive is in an ejected state or not. If you can't tell, there should be some disk guides at the front of the drive, they'll be white plastic, with black rubber rollers. If they are close together, the drive is in an ejected state, and if they're far apart, the drive is not ejected. Once the drive is in an ejected state, the black plastic cover should easily go back into place, and you should be able to feed disks into the drive just fine. This description is all from memory, so it could be a little off. If you find yourself having some trouble still after these instructions, post a picture of the drive if you can, and I might be able to point you in the right direction from there.

Hey everyone,
My 20gb release ps3 started freezing on me after getting about half way through gta and keeps freezing 5 minutes into gameplay. My new Call of Duty 4 disc also would freeze on me five minutes into gameplay as well. I am past warranty so i opened up the system to clean the blu-ray lens but now my system will just show its loading and won't register any games. I am wondering if anyone can help me with letting me know what is possibly causing my ps3 not to read games from me taking apart the blu-ray player (do i need to adjust a specific ribbon)? Do you think my blu-ray is shot now? I just want to try all that i can before I bite the bullet and send it to sony so any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi all my 60gb ps3 stopped playing disc`s yesterday tried turning it off then back on again but no good called sony this morning they are sending me a ps3 out next week

dustysum8: Did you actually clean the lens? If so, what did you use? If the drive is running enough to give you the loading circle, then all of the cables are most likely seated properly. I don't think the drive is completely gone at this point and wouldn't give up hope.

I used a lens cleaner with a lens cloth. I screwed up something because before the system would read the game and I could start to play them. What part could I have messed up and how can I fix it? Thanks for the help.

hello all, I have a 60gb ps3 that stopped reading just blu-ray discs....I can still play ps1, ps2, dvd, cd. If i was to buy the KES-400AAA, would there be a problem because of my PS3 model/Firmware that will prevent the new laser from working?

stayhye: this could definitely be an issue with the laser. Look on the laser unit for a model number (KES-400A or KES-410A.) If you are going to buy a KES-400AAA, be sure that the laser that is currently in your system is a KES-400A, as long as you are getting the correct replacement laser, you shouldn't have any issues.
dustysum8: I have no idea what went wrong there. There's really nothing I can think of in the drive that could cause this type of trouble after a simple lens cleaning. I would probably recommend purchasing an new laser for it.

Hi everyone, having the same probable motor problem as you psilizard, got the ps3 apart and the drive out, how do I crack into the silver metal casing to get a look at the guts of the drive? Any help greatly appreciated! thanks!

There's some real good youtube video guides on it, just search something like ps3 blu-ray disassembly, and you should get a good guide on how to crack that drive open.

after slaving over the net trying to figure out why my 40 gb ps3's drive died out of nowhere, you seem to be the only one who may have the answer to my question: Why is this happening? So far I called Sony and even though it's all over the net blog's/ forums they say it's not happening to many. Either way they are sending my little brother and I a pre-paid box to send them our ps3 so we can get back a refurb that could be god knows how old, and ours is only 2 months old so yeah I'm kind of undecided as to what to do here. Do I break that seal that breaks my warranty and try to replace a motor that I can't identify or do i wait the 2-3 weeks for Sony to send me a refurb. I tell you what though if it's as easy as you make it sound you could onto something if this becomes a major issue with these things, anyway thank's for shedding some light. please tell me if you have a 40gb hd.... I read an article says they were less ventilated w/ cheaper parts to compete with M$'s console. ty

you were right, opened it up, and a little piece fell out. I was hoping it was the magnet, it wasn't. A piece of something, looks broken off from the laser mechanism. Soooo, psxboy.com is the place to go huh? By the way, thanks for that info too! I may bend everyone's ear upon the time I venture into re-assembly. Thanks again!

PS3 60g
PS3 will not recognize any blu ray media. Works fine with regular dvd, cd's & PS2 games. Replaced laser thinking that would be the problem but no luck still will not recognize blu ray media; games & dvd's. What could be the problem. Do not want to send back to Sony, I want to fix myself. Any suggestions?
