atrac88: Mine's still working great, sorry to hear that yours is having trouble again, psxboy has a 1 month warranty on all laser lens according to thier FAQ. You pay shipping back to them, and they send replacement as soon as they get the defective part back.

I have had trouble with my PS3 since updating to 2.41 firmware. It would not read any Blu-Ray discs, and I would see the icon in the upper right corner spinning, but no disc loads. I tried a DVD but had the same result. Upon trying many more Blu-Ray's and DVD's nothing worked. Powered off over and over, etc etc. I then tried a music CD and much to my surprise, it worked. The music played perfectly fine, and it seemed great. So, I put a blu-ray game back in the drive, and IT WORKED. The disc loaded up (it was Rockband to be exact) and I thought everything was back to normal. I turned it off. Came back to play a few hours later, and it still loaded the disc fine (seemingly). When I clicked on the game from the XMB to load it up, the screen went back, and that's all that happened. I could press the PS button to bring up the XMB. I waited and waited and nothing happened, so I clicked on Quit Game, and the screen was black again. I was forced to do a hard power off. I left it that way for a while, and when I came back, the discs weren't being read again.
Here is where my problem gets a little strange. The PS3 will not play any discs properly aside from music CDs. After putting a music CD in, I can put any other type of disc in, and it will read it, but ONLY after putting a music CD in. It reads it, but really doesn't do much beyond that.
I took the PS3 apart after reading a lot of forums and watching some videos. I really screwed up the blu-ray drive when I left a disc in it during disassembly. THANKFULLY, someone else on here did that and PsiLizards solution worked like a charm. I cleaned the lens with some lens cleaner solution I bought, and a Q-tip, but this didn't make any difference.
When I put blu-ray discs in, with the system apart (so I can see the discs), they do start to spin. However, it's almost as if they can't get really going. They start to spin up fast, but then stutter a bit, then try to start up again really fast, but stutter. Eventually they will just stop spinning, and no disc shows up.
Basically, PsiLizard, my explanation was complex, but my question is simple: Do you think I just simply need a new laser mechanism (KEM-400AAA)? This is my guess, but really, people that post on forums are always so vague and leave no detail to their problems. This leaves me wondering if I am exactly duplicating someone else's issues, or is this is entirely different.
If it isn't the laser mechanism, I guess the other thing it could be is the blu-ray drive's board? I am hoping it isn't because from what I have read, that isn't something I want to have to mess with.
Whatever it may be, can you please post a link to where I can get the part? I really like the prices on psxboy (the place PsiLizard suggested) but they are out of stock. If anyone knows of a place that isn't literally raping people by charging triple the price, AND has them in stock, I would really appreciate a link.

I just checked on psxboy, the laser lens (KES-400A) are sold out, but the full unit (KEM-400AAA) is still in stock. That is a wierd issue, I think my first instinct would be to suspect the laser. Go with the KEM-400AAA and give that a try, let us know how it works out.

Uggghhh!!!!
Yesterday psxboy.com was out of stock of KEM-400AAA, so I bought it from someone else for $80. Oh well, it's too late now. The other site (richspsxparts.com) shipped already and it will be here Monday. Shipped same day I bought it, great service so far. I will come back and update on Monday once I get it installed, and let everyone know if this solved my problem.

I have read the entire forum in search for two answers.
- I wish to know if the lens change will fix error 80010514?
- What type of lens would my machine use if it is a PS3 40GB manufactured in Sept. 2007?

Rich's PSX Parts are great because both they and their stock are in New Jersey, and shipping to anywhere in the states is free. Its just too bad that they are out of stock with the KES-400A.

If you read around, 80010514 was said by Sony to be caused by either:
- A faulty sector on the internal hard drive.
- A bad firmware install.
However, some people claim that Sony told them it was the Blu-ray drive. Sony also could've meant that it was the controller chip attached to the bottom of the Blu-ray drive.
If I were you, I'd look not only on this forum, but all over the internet for people who have had this problem (there are plenty) and how people have fixed it.

Thanks, I saw on another forum, but can't find it now, an English guy called Sony and managed to speak to a technician and he confirmed the Blu Ray lens is shot.
I wish to know if there is anyone who has fixed this with a new lens.

Thanks PsiLizard, unfortunatley, the victory was short-lived. It played PS3 games for a few days and last night it started acting funky. The PS3 games wouldn't show up on the XMB and they'd only start once in a while when AutoDisc Start was set to On - and then they wouldn't work at all for about 40 minutes. I tried 1, 2, 3, 4 games and then I tried GT5 and that worked, and then I put another game in and that didn't work, and then a game did work but locked up during loading - then a game did work and I was able to play it for a couple hours before going to bed.
Today, I was able to play 1 game and after half an hour or so it locked up again on a loading screen. I can't take it anymore. I can play PS2 games and watch DVDs but the PS3 games are a problem. Most of the time they aren't even recognized on the XMB but I hear the drive spinning up and slowing down, over and over.
I got a feeling that maybe the KEM400AAA is a subpar part or maybe it's a combination of things... It doesn't matter to me anymore. Right now, I have a PS3 that's a PS2 with extras.
Last night my PS3 just shut off while I was in the middle of a game. The red light wasn't even on - I got a feeling it's overheating, too. I turned it off, waited a minute and then turned it back on and was able to get one or two PS3 games to work but that was in 40-60 minutes time.
Sorry for the rambling. I am just soooo unhappy with Sony that I'm gonna take it to the BBB. Maybe a few thousand of those emails and phone calls will make Sony get off their collective butts and pay attention to their loyal fans - loyal since the PS1...

Really sorry to hear your ordeal.I'm really regretting my PS3 purchase.
I live in Ecuador, so sending my PS3 to Sony is a bit difficult, so I bought the PS3 over the XBOX360 thinking about it's reliability. After this malfunction of my ps3 I started asking around for prices for fixing my machine, I found out they charge here $150 for fixing my PS3 and they fix the 360's RROD for only $85. Makes you think!!
I now believe that the PS3 is a superior machine, when it works, but I rather have a 360 since it is cheaper to fix.
We all have to inform Sony and get them to do something.

So are we just basically buying these KEM-400AAA's and they are all going to end up defective again (some sooner than others)?
Is this just a current service part that all of these companies are getting directly from Sony, or are they some kind of backstock of old drives (possibly replacement ones) that Sony is unloading because they know they are going to be bad again?

I installed the new laser (KEM-400AAA) and it is still not loading discs. Same exact problem as before. Help :( Is it the blu-ray drive board? I already spent $80 on this damn laser that wasn't even my problem. I really don't want to waste another $40-$50 on the board if that probably isn't it either.

Jester, I'm willing to bet its that controller board because this began happening after a firmware update. This is truly unfortunate because thats one of the hardest things to replace because you'll need one that has the correct firmware on it.

You mean I need one with the PS3 2.42 firmware on it? Or do I need one with the right blu-ray firmware? Is there any way I can find out which firmware I will need, and then also check that I am buying one with the proper firmware on it?
Does this fix require any soldering? Or is it just a matter of replacing the whole circuit board that's on the bottom of the blu-ray drive?

I think you will need a board with whatever version you have now. If it's 2.42 that you've got, look for that (although it might be hard to find for a while, as that came out not long ago).
Anyone who is selling just the controller board should know what firmware is on it. Ask them.
As for soldering, no you won't need to do any, provided that you're taking the method I'm talking about. I've heard that you can also replace the IC chip on the controller board, which would require soldering. PSXBoy seems to sell them for about $20.
Also, Holy crap, i never knew they sold KES-400A diodes! Crap. I could've saved a lot of money....

I am starting to suspect a firmware update problem or controller board issue as well for some of these problems with reading discs.
I'm having a very strange problem. A friend's ps3 stopped reading blu-ray only, but would read DVD's and CD's just fine. I just assumed it was the blue laser that died, so I ordered a replacement from psxboy.
I have now installed it and immediately tried my test blu-ray disc on it (Kung Fu Hustle) and it did not read it. "Crap! Psxboy sent me a bad unit!" Then I tried Superman Returns on it and it read it fine. WTF? So I then tried some other blu-ray movies and they were fine. Just Kung Fu Hustle wouldn't work (and that disc plays fine on other units). SO then tried some blu-ray games on it and they were fine too.
I still have his system so I tried it again today...still wouldn't read Kung Fu Hustle. THEN I tried my other blu-ray movies and it doesn't read those either now. But it still plays blu-ray games just fine.
I don't understand it. Maybe the controller board is bad...seems most likely at this point.
And as it's been stated, those are very difficult to replace. Not only does no one sell them outright (you'd have to buy one from a broken system on eBay I suppose), but do indeed seemed to be tied to the motherboard, so you'd have to buy both the controller board and motherboard from the same system.
What a pain in the ass! Of course, all of our issues are courtesy of Sony not honoring the manufacture date on the system unless you have the receipt of purchase. Which is absolutely ridiculous.

Heads up! More complications.
The laser diode can actually contains three laser diodes emitting at 780, 660, and 405 nm wavelengths (for CD, DVD, and Blu-ray, respectively). These are connected in a CCC (Common Cathode Can) configuration. The case is the cathode (-ve) of all three laser diodes as well as the monitor photodiode.

The diodes are made by Nichia, who holds 80% of the worlds Blu-ray diode supply. Earlier when we were experiencing the format war, there was a shortage of diodes and many BDA board members like LG and Samsung who would make players couldn't so that Sony could use as much as possible, as quickly as possible, for PS3s. In other words, They had to increase the production rate,
AND EVERYONE KNOWS WHAT THAT MEANS.
So while some of you may truly be experiencing controller board issues, This could be causing some problems too. I hate to complicate things but I'm just looking for answers since Sony won't give us any.

You can get the complete controller board here for $25 (divineo.com/cgi-bin/div-us/search.html). It looks like a Foreign Company that can have the board to you by FedEx.

I was going to try the controller board myself but there comes a point where I have to throw in the towel and pay to have it fixed. I tried the KES-400AA to no avail. I just want to use the PS3 at this point and just can not justify spending anymore money trying to fix. I really thought is was the KES-400aaa but in my case it still will not play any Blu-ray media swaping out the laser. The controller board still seems to be a mystery where there are different points of view. I go back to what i orginally said in that why are there comapinies on the interenert selling these boards and there are more than 2 or 3 of them out there if they know they will not work unless you have the correct revision on the board.

I tell you one thing, there's a tiny plug with a black and a red wire on it that plugs into the controller board that I simply cannot unplug. It is so small I can get my fingers on it, and when I use tweezers it strips the yellow plug on it.
Yikes! Anyone have an easy way to unplug it??? It seems like it would be such a simply little thing. Too little apparently!

Haha yeah, thats the plug for the sensor that detects when a disc is inserted. It tells the the drive to grab the disc from you and mount it.
Well, I have some nails that I should probably trim soon. That's how I did it. However I Remember once just tugging on the wires and it came out, but I was really nervous about it snapping. It is indeed very small and fragile.

Regarding this issue, I went ahead and put the optical assembly from his into a working unit, and it also worked just fine. The working assembly in his unit would allow DVD's to be read, but not blu-ray at all. SO it does look like there is something wrong with the controller board.
Ugh, not good news for my friend. Like it's been mentioned, it's going to be a crap shoot using a different controller board. I have tried it before and it resulted in no discs being read (even though the laser was detecting them).
If only there was a way to flash them to make the motherboard recognize them. From what I've been reading, no one has come up with a way to do that yet. Is this correct?
If so, how are companies selling the controller boards without customers getting them to work? Or am I missing something?

Hey guys. After installing the new laser and finding out that didn't solve my problem... I really felt stuck. I did not want to try buying a controller board, in fear of the revision doubts.
I contacted the seller for the laser and I am hoping to receive a refund. In the meantime, I searched ebay and found an entire Blu-Ray drive straight out of a brand new PS3 that works flawlessly. The seller had 7 of them, but they went FAST, in less than a day. I hope this works... I really don't see why it wouldn't.
I will report back when it arrives!

Does that drive include the controller board?
I recently realized that this doesnt have to be isolated to PS3s. Unless they are truly keyed to the motherboard, its just like any other disk drive with a controller board. For example, look here.
If you read the responses, they say that the revision that yours came with or any revision higher should work. I'm going to look around if this is true.
I'm just wondering why youd buy the full drive if you found out it wasn't the laser. I don't think its anything else in there. Its the controller board I think.
BTW, how did your PS3 go bad? Was it after a firmware update? Did you drop it? I think the guy who owned the one I'm working with dropped it due to the dents on the case.
