No wonder. So, do you Ggabyte fans think they'd RMA my old rev 1.03 for what little issues it had and move to rev 3.xx or let me up to X38-DQ6T instead?

WIth regard to graphics, unless you're on a very tight budget, I recommend almost everyone an HD3850 at the moment. They're relatively inexpensive, offer superb picture quality, are immensely powerful for gaming purposes, and support HD video of all shapes and sizes.
If you really can't stretch to a 3850, I'd recommend a 2600XT.

I assume that's the 256MB version though. For anyone who plays PC games, I'd recommend getting the 512MB version.

Indeed not, but if a job's worth doing, it's worth doing well. At high resolutions (1680x1050 and above) a large number of games aren't playable on the 256MB version if you use AA and AF, simply due to the lack of available memory on the card.

Well, let's be honest, you're always selling your PC! At least that way you don't have to worry about buying futureproof components, since you never keep them more than a month!

Too outdated? You've only just bought them!
Also, is there a 500W VX now? Or are there still just the 450 and 550, seems a bit of a waste making that many versions.

As long as you can turn a profit doing it, you can continue to upgrade at little or no real cost! LOL!!

One of my mates is brilliant at component choices. Most of his old PC parts he can sell on ebay for as much as he paid for them. In some cases, he'd owned them for more than 2 years! Talk about a free PC!

hey, if an E2140 can clock to 3.2Ghz easily, then does that mean E2160 can clock to 3.6Ghz easily? or is there a wall?

Haha no way. I think 3.2 Ghz is max for them up to the E6300/E6320. Now if you have a E6400 you MIGHT get it up to 3.5 Ghz. I managed to do it some time ago, but I better RAM then PC-6400.

GTR35,

I don't know about the easily part. Much depends on the motherboard, power supply and memory. An E2140 can hit 3.2GHz but it takes good high quality components to do it. It's not going to happen on a $50 motherboard with a $49 power supply and junk memory. If you read the reviews on the 2140 (discounting the Idiot Factor), most are getting between 2.6 and 3GHz out of them, which is reasonable. It does suffer a bit too, because of the 1MB cache memory. My E6750 was much faster at the same 3.2gHz than the E4300 because of the 4MB of cache memory vs the 2MB of the 4300.
Hey, Quality in = Quality out! LOL!!

Russ

Good advice Russ. :D I'll be interested to see what this E6850 will do since I have "quality" RAM, MOBO, and CPU... I hope the GPU doesn't matter in this case. Like I told my buddy I'm not really "interested or care" about scores but I'd like to see how FAR the E6850 will go. :D

greensman,

While the CPU's performance does help the GPU, it doesn't work the other way around. The only thing a lesser GPU will do is reduce the gaming performance. An old XFX 5200 does just as well when watching ordinary DVDs as an 8800GTX. Most modern half way decent video cards will do everything but games and perhaps HD video. I've only got an XFX 7600 GT in mine and the computer performs very well, even at most games. Not as good as say Sam's, but still more than adequate and has no effect on the performance of the CPU and memory. The E6750 @3.52GHz more than doubles the performance of my video card compared to the E4300 @3.2gHz on the same MB.

Russ

The E6850 hes very good OC potential and can do the 4GHz makr quite easily on air and on medium priced mobo @ stock multi as a snap. 500FSB is just as easy on mid to good boards just the same.
So to wrap it up, 500x8 is a butter zone for this model on air.

Yeah Russ is right the GPU shouldn't mess with your overclock. Get your self a decent video card anyway, some new PC games look like lots of fun.

GTR35,

On mine what improved a lot that I didn't expect, is the video 3DMark 06 performance. 3DMark 06 was in the mid 1800 range with the E4300 and 2MB cache at 3.2GHz. With the E6750 with 4MB cache at 3,5GHz, it's 3917. I realize that some of it is the extra 300MHz but not that much. That extra 2MB of cache memory really helps the video a lot.
Happy New Year to You and Yours,
Russ
