im gettting about 50 avg everything on the lowest details, dx9 no aa/af at 1920 x1200.
seeing your results, i cant wat to jump to CF and a Quad core! me= happy
i just hope this case doesnt overheat. if it does looks like the case upgrade im planning along with the corsair H50-1 watercooling kit will come very soon :D
it truely is a fantastic game though, and one worth the upgrade. loving it more than i liked MW2, not sure if it tops COD4/2 for me btu then this is ALOT more realistic and squad based, rather than the other 2.
BTW i cba withthe SP how are the frames on that jefF?

Shaff: If necessary, just stick a really noisy fan in there for the interim, sort the case out later.
Jeff: I did wonder about DX9/DX10, but yeah I already knew you can't use AA without being in DX10. I will try the game without AA to see how well it runs.
As for graphics, I'll look again, but I found the SP graphics very disappointing, easily beaten by the textures and effects in COD4, the game looked very antiquated to me. But I didn't play for very long due to the lag.

ouch, the MP looks fantastic! seriously breathtaking graphics. esp on the jungle maps. though i have foudn when sunlight goes between tree leaves, if there is a rock itll go through that too lol.
and i have everything on low yet it textures on the floor keep switching between a decent level and fail textures. i want it to be constant fail ones to i get a FPS boost. dont know if thats just me though,

Played it through again briefly, and after the intro scene the graphics are much, much better. Reminiscent of Crysis in style. They're better in some parts, worse in others.
Microstutter does almost entirely eliminate the game's immersive feel, as you can't help but notice it as your character jerks and lunges along the path, but the frame rate itself, with AA off never seems an issue.
Attached a frame rate graph. For some reason, the intro text with 'this is what really happened that day' is limited to 8fps.
CPU-wise, the game is using 35-45% of my Core i5, so if this scales linearly I imagine it would use 80-100% of a stock Q6600.
GPU-wise, the game uses between 260 and 290% of my GPUs, with fan speeds adjusting to 80% and 60% for the two cards.
The frame rate graph dips at the end sharply. This isn't an artifact of the benchmark, the game did lag quite noticeably when a huge explosion went off in my vicinity. This drop can therefore be seen as 'typical' of when action heats up.
The huge spike at the start is when the menu was opened.
In other news, played Aliens vs Predator briefly (or tried to) - the benchmarks are accurate. Worse, the game requires an absolute 60fps minimum frame rate, as even at 45fps it runs horrifically. The tragic thing is, I get 41fps at 1920x1200 in the starting room, and GPU scaling is an astonishing 390%.

Haha the intro scene is horrific. The rest of the game I thought was quite good looking though. The character models especially are downright impressive :) I think Crysis did foliage a bit better but the overall graphics standard is right up there.

On some systems there is a slight microstutter and maybe even some minor input lag. Try turning HBAO/HSAO off. This has worked for some.
Quote: CPU-wise, the game is using 35-45% of my Core i5, so if this scales linearly I imagine it would use 80-100% of a stock Q6600.
Sam, try adding "+fullproc" at the end of the target line. This worked for some in the beta. I'm using it too though not entirely sure if it's working or not. Not a magical fix but it might help in your case seeing as it isn't using the CPU fully nor the cards. If the cards are scaling so badly maybe it's because they're CPU limited, seeing the low usage.
Quote: GPU-wise, the game uses between 260 and 290% of my GPUs, with fan speeds adjusting to 80% and 60% for the two cards.
Hmm I suspected as much. Scaling isn't exactly great for me either but better than that I think. I get about 160-170% scaling.

I think it was already agreed that AVP is a steaming pile. But hey, at least it uses Crossfire, LOL.

Just got a call from my brother. He disconnected the audio from the HTPC, and got audio running through his TV. Apparently the Geforce 210(maybe others) allow audio to pass through the video card. Not really processed, but simply passed through the Video card, to allow the HDMI connection to house the audio. Wish I had known that. Because we ran audio through the standard typical onboard audio(which is primary), it overrode the video cards capabilities. So I had no way of knowing. I simply assumed that because its a lowly video card, the HDMI was simply for video.
Lesson learned :D

Yeah, that's why you want to be able to steal a police car. They have one parked a block away from the safe house (past the russian clothing store) for that reason - but I prefer the location I told you about. Then you just go park somewhere safe - enter the police computer - and pick the criminal you want to eliminate - then just follow the directions. Lots of fun! hahaha
And when you have eliminated all top 10 most-wanted, you can always go to "breaking crimes" where you will also run into police at the same time - hairy!
Originally posted by estuansis: Oh yeah my HAF got here today. I'll be running in cool comfort tomorrow. Man do those 4870s get hot :P
Man, this is turning into the HAF forum - Sam, Kevin, and now you, Jeff. Maybe my Spedo is going to have to get sold - it's still brand new in the box, lol!
Wow, another awesome game review of Bad Company 2 by Jeff:
"I actually scored a kill through some bushes last night. I couldn't see him, but I could hear him perfectly :)"
Cool! My 5.1 Medusa headsets are gonna be workin overtime!

Jeff - better than BF2? Is your whole clan gonna move over to the new game? Do they have a copter for you to pilot?
Quote: First-off the shooting mechanic slaughters the one in BF2.
I guess that answers my question - also I took note of your "you don't die so fast" observation!
Shaff is a convert too:
Originally posted by shaff: it truely is a fantastic game though, and one worth the upgrade. loving it more than i liked MW2, not sure if it tops COD4/2 for me
That's high praise - and I can understand that COD4/2 is still holding out well since I recall you were the reigning xfire cod4/1 king with insane k2d ratios :D
Oh oh, Sam has found a problem:
Quote: Microstutter does almost entirely eliminate the game's immersive feel, as you can't help but notice it as your character jerks and lunges along the path, but the frame rate itself, with AA off never seems an issue.
I HATE MICROSTUTTER!!!
Ok, Sam, what's the solution for microstutter! (And while we're at it - what's really the cause?) You can get microstutter by having processes running in the background that take a bit of cycles here and there, right? You can get microstutter by random disk accesses here and there, right? HOW CAN MICROSTUTTER BE ELIMINATED??
Jeff has some ideas: Originally posted by estuansis: On some systems there is a slight microstutter and maybe even some minor input lag. Try turning HBAO/HSAO off. This has worked for some.
Horizon Based Ambient Occlusion - wtf???? Jeff, you're way up on graphics effects - what the hell is this new thing?
Originally posted by random bad company forum guy: I've been trying to figure this out. I've been switching back and fourth with it on and off and have also taken screenshots and then compared later on.. and I can't see a noticeable difference with the game looks with HBAO on or off. The only difference I can notice is I get about 35 fps with HBAO on, and about 55 fps with it off. *shrug*
Can anyone fill me in?
Wow - wiki has an awesome article, with a couple of photos:
Originally posted by wiki article on ambient occlusion: Ambient occlusion is a shading method used in 3D computer graphics which helps add realism to local reflection models by taking into account attenuation of light due to occlusion. Ambient occlusion attempts to approximate the way light radiates in real life, especially off what are normally considered non-reflective surfaces.
Unlike local methods like Phong shading, ambient occlusion is a global method, meaning the illumination at each point is a function of other geometry in the scene. However, it is a very crude approximation to full global illumination. The soft appearance achieved by ambient occlusion alone is similar to the way an object appears on an overcast day.
Ambient occlusion is most often calculated by casting rays in every direction from the surface. Rays which reach the background or ?sky? increase the brightness of the surface, whereas a ray which hits any other object contributes no illumination. As a result, points surrounded by a large amount of geometry are rendered dark, whereas points with little geometry on the visible hemisphere appear light.
Ambient occlusion is related to accessibility shading, which determines appearance based on how easy it is for a surface to be touched by various elements (e.g., dirt, light, etc.). It has been popularized in production animation due to its relative simplicity and efficiency. In the industry, ambient occlusion is often referred to as "sky light."[citation needed]
The ambient occlusion shading model has the nice property of offering a better perception of the 3d shape of the displayed objects. This was shown in a paper [1] where the authors report the results of perceptual experiments showing that depth discrimination under diffuse uniform sky lighting is superior to that predicted by a direct lighting model.

Omega: As we said before, it's lowly, because it's an HTPC card, it will have HDMI Audio. It's been in every graphics card produced for years...
Jeff: I wouldn't really say 260-290% is bad, it's not exemplary but it's still very reasonable. I might give the fullproc command a try later.
Rich: Microstutter is typically graphics, as is often macrostutter. It's simply stutter that's caused by background processes and so on, as it's inconsistent. They essentially cause frames to not be displayed, in the case of microstutter and macrostutter, it basically just means the frame rate it looks like you're getting is much lower than the frame rate you're actually getting. In the case of normal stutter, frames aren't rendered at all, and this shows up in fps graphs. Typically, systems without software problems and with enough memory/CPU power should never encounter normal stutter in game.
Microstutter is a problem that plagues the HD3000 series cards, and also any multi-graphics setup. Some games it affects, others it doesn't. Unfortunately, if a game has it as an issue, I have yet to see a single example where newer drivers / game patches have fixed it, so if it's there, it's there to stay. Sometimes if it's caused by dual graphics it can be fixed by using just one GPU, but of course, most games will not run properly at 2560x1600 without multiple graphics cards.

Yeah it takes all of 5 seconds to apply. It's supposed to be just for people like you. Not seeing full use on either the processor or the cards. Theoretically, if you can raise the processor usage, it should help your cards scale better.

BC2 is ALL about team work. It's basically a highly evolved version of Battlefield 2. The teams are much smaller, but the maps are more involved and require tighter teams to really be good at them.

Ran GPUZ during a Left 4 Dead 2 VS. Game last night.
GPU usage was 360-395% throughout (mostly 385-395), GPU1 temperature (which will be the hottest) 84-88ºC, Shader core and DISPIO 85-91ºC and MEMIO 99-103ºC. GPU fan speeds were auto, but card 1 ran up to 5180rpm, and was typically between 4850 and 5150.

Played a little bit of AvP this morning, experimented with the settings to find the highest setting that remains perfectly fluid - you're gonna love this, 1280x800, all minimum. Frame rate is 85-310. Anything that cuts the frame rate below 80 causes juddering slightly due to microstutter. Oh, and all four 4870s are working almost flat out.

AVP was the biggest disappointment of the year. I was so looking forward to it. Graphics and performance aside, the game sucks.
Just made another attempt to play Deadspace today. Yeah then I exited right away. That game is just too damn scary and I play FEAR religiously... probably the rocking sound effects. Every little noise absolutely unnerves me... :(
