Well then it comes down to HD4850, HD4870 or HD5770. The HD4850 is less efficient than the HD5770 and slower, but cheaper by $65 ($55 after rebate). The HD4870 is marginally faster than the HD5770, but much less efficient, requiring two power connectors as well, and costs $11 more ($21 after rebate). Personally, I think it's between the HD5770 and HD4850. The HD4850 is better value, but the HD5770 is the more modern and efficient card.

$200 is way more than enough for a good gaming card.

This is easily one of the fastest 5770s

Or this 4870 which might work out faster in a few cases...

Link still broken.
XFX cards don't have higher temperatures than any other brand, not sure where that rumour comes from. Especially true with HD5770s because they all use the same cooler!

Typically the HD5770s idle in the 40s or so, and under full load will run up to about the 80s for the standard coolers, maybe a bit lower for the noisier open coolers, such as your 1st and 4th link. ATI GPU temperatures, however, are fine up to well over 100ºC so there's no issue really.

First GTX480 benchmark has appeared, it's not looking good. Five games were tested, alongside Unigine. The performance of the GTX480 is obviously superior in Unigine for now, but in the games tested (DiRT 2, Bad Company 2, Crysis Warhead, Far Cry 2 and HAWX), the GTX480 only shows any lead (greater than 4-5%) in Far Cry 2, DiRT 2 and HAWX - HAWX being a game that was bugged for the HD5870 in earlier catalysts which has been fixed in the latest driver and DiRT 2 being bugged for the GTX480 tripping into DirectX9 and showing false figures. This really only leaves the GTX480 with an advantage in Far Cry 2, hardly the most important title so far. The HD5870 and GTX480 are neck and neck in Crysis Warhead until 2560x1600 (bear in mind this is Enthusiast with AA enabled) at which point you wouldn't be using an HD5870, but an HD5970, which slaps the GTX480 around in all of these tests regardless.

Power of the GTX480 is about identical to that of the HD4870X2 but with better idles (higher than that of the HD5970), 475W PC draw at load, 150 at idle. Load temperature of the GPU on the stock cooler is a toasty 93ºC, and with a 250W+ GPU to cool, that isn't going to be a quiet 93 Celsius either.
The GTX480 is a dismal failure if it costs any more than £350. I'm almost certain it will.

EDIT: The GTX480 is £450. All together now... "Oh...Dear."

Wow I'm actually impressed by how much fail that is. In fact I can see it now...
Nvidia will become the new benchmark of failure. You'll be on Youtube one day only to spot 'you fail harder then the Nvidia' in the comment box among other insults.

In fact I've been inspired to make a commemorative picture using the specification's :)

Edit: Oh yeah you need to actually put the image as an image otherwise it's just a link....

Note the devastating effect of Anti-Aliasing on ATI cards. Oddly, the game is ATI-favourable if this fact is excluded.

So, XFX have decided not to produce ANY Geforce GTX400 based cards, either because as they say, they don't think they're good enough, or as rumours say, because nvidia disallowed it due to XFX being ATI-collaborating scum. Either way, pretty lulzy.
So what have the XFX R&D team been up to?
Well, it comes from ATI, and it's faster than the GTX400 series, which can only mean one thing. It's an HD5970 relative. What XFX have been working on, is codename Petunia.
Two HD5870 GPUs at full clocks, with 2GB of memory per GPU, on one board.

In XFX's case, this card has a limited production run of 1500. Whether the other brands choose to use a limited production run isn't stated, but if so much as the three brands so far confirmed to be producing the cards all produce only 1500 (Asus, Sapphire and XFX) then that still makes as many of these monsters as GTX480s currently exist. Sobering thought.

Up until now, the school of thought has been that such cards would cost 'around' $1000. This translates into an astronomical figure of £850 for UK users. However, off the record, AMD have said they expect the UK price figure to be in the £700 area, and low 700s at that, which prices the Petunia offering very close to that of two normal 5870s, which would only have 1GB of memory each. On the record, XFX have also said they expect to sell their card for 'around' $100 above the normal HD5970 asking price in the US, which is $800. This would also translate to around £700 in europe.
Supposedly, benchmarks of these cards are likely to appear by the middle of next month, and we will see just how hot the competition is between GTX480 SLI and Petunia. Exciting times.

The GTX400 series sucks. They saw it, I saw it, everyone saw it. Attempting to support the product is useless. This is a worse fail than the HD2900XT. Yeah... I said it.

Well you can count me out :P I plan to spend no more than $600 altogether on TWO separate GPUs.

LOL again, GTX400 is fail. Even ATi didn't have supply issues like this. AFAIK the HD2900XT was actually realistic to find and purchase. The GTX480... well good luck finding one.

Well considering the GTX480 is only ~5-10% faster than the 5870, I think Crossfire's legendary scaling will pick up the rest of the slack. I think both platforms will be on even footing performance-wise, but the GTX480 is still a waste of money because the 5870 is miles cheaper...

I'm liking the sound of this there codename Petunia. Nvidia will lose the more money then sense market to it and will be forced to try something different like errm competitive pricing? Fingers crossed anyways.

To be fair Jeff, at 1920x1200, the extra memory is useless to you, and given that you can use Eyefinity without the 6-port cards, so is that feature (as it would be to me as well). You would see the most benefit out of either an HD5970 or two 5850s/5870s in crossfire.
