Okay, well I used to mainly backup movies. Now I mainly backup games for the Playstation 2. Games are usually much more picky about media than movies. I've never used Memorex to backup a game, because I've read all the warnings. When I first started burning games, I didn't want to spend much on blank dvds so I ended up getting Imation 8x DVD+R's. They always worked so I never bothered to look into them. [I didn't know about the ID codes then.] Well, I know now that they are CMC's, which supposedly are horrible, but I never ever have problems. Out of about 100 discs, only 2 or so ended up being coasters, one of which was my fault. So, what's the problem with these discs if they are working perfectly for me? Is it that they are going to become damaged over time or what? Now, for the Memorex issue. When I constantly burned movies, the first few batches I got were the Memorex "Cool Colors" 8x DVD+R's. All of these movies work perfectly. I popped in a disc a few minutes ago to check the ID code, and it is a RITE GO3, which I thought was supposedly decent media. I also saw this on a site: Memorex = CMC, RICOHJPN, PRODISC, INFODISC. They don't have the RITE GO3 listed, and other than the CMC it seems that Memorex sometimes uses 3 differentgood types of media. Therefore, I'm thinking that all Memorex got a bad name just because of the CMC discs. Someone just got me a 30pack of Memorex 8x DVD-R. I don't want to open them, because I plan on taking them back, getting a refund, and buying a different brand. I am doing this because I always use DVD+R's and I am thinking that these are probably CMC's. So, does anyone know which Memorex discs other than the "Cool Colors" use media other than CMC? Unfortuantely, Walmart is the only store within a reasonable distance that sells dvd media, so that's where I'll be going. I don't want to spend too much money. Yeah, I'm cheap. Haha. Which discs should I get from Walmart when I go get a refund? By the way, I have a Lite-On burner and I only burn at around 2.6x max, so 4x and 8x blanks are fine. Let me know. Thanks.

Sorry for typing so much the first time, and I think I was a little unclear. I will not be buying Memorex when I return this 30pk. I was asking the following questions:
1. Does anyone know which Memorex discs other than my "Cool Colors" are not CMC's?
2. What's wrong with my Imation DVD+R's (which are coded CMC's) if I'm having a near perfect success rate?
3. What is your opinion on what I should get from Walmart when I take these back? I will just continue getting the Imation DVD+R's if there aren't any good deals, but since they are CMC's I am going to look to get something else first.
Much clearer this time. Haha. Thanks.

JoshLogan,
Memorex discs are known for 90% coaster. They have very bad reputation becos most of them are from CMC. The cheaper ones will not last long either. Times after times this thing had been brought out so many times in this afterdawn thread. Why dont you lend your ears to your senior member here. I think our senior members (samgung/K666) will one day get sick of answering this question.
After so many comments of this crappy dvd media (memorex),if you think memorex is worth investing then go ahead and afterall the money is yours.

If Walmart is going to be your Source for Media I would suggest either Maxell or Sony... Look for MADE IN JAPAN on the label...

henryting,
You obviously did not read my posts.
Thanks, tmfloria. Hopefully those two brands aren't too pricey. I'm looking for DVD+R's by the way. I know which brands are the highest quality. I'm mainly looking for what will be the best quality for the price. Best value.

Nearly 95% of Memorex media is crap with low quality. With that being said; even if you have a successfully backed up now, but down the road like 6 - 12 months it will starts to freeze, won't load/play no more, then you'll know what's up. However, the choice is yours to make - it's your money, your call.
Honestly, I'll never ever spend a penny on Memorex as long as the famous Taiyo Yuden, Maxell and Verbatim exist.

I myself have no trouble burning cmag media and at a 95% success rate. But stand alones can really pick these out and not be able to play them. A buddy gave me a 30 pack spindle of memorex +8x,and they happen to be from wal-mart with the MID code of CMC MAG-E01-000. These are just plain dvd +8x r with the branding on the inner hub of Is it live or is it Memorex. I've been backing up his riskee` dvds so I keep the burn speed at 2.4x and a backup target of 4360 mbs.
I did 3 of them last week for him and tested out in my new Magnavox $37 walmart special player. 1 of the 3 discs would not be recognized.I then inserted it into my very picky cyberhome dvd recorder and it played with no problem. Usually I stick a backup in that recorder, turn power off,and then back on again to be able to play a backup. That problematic Cmag was recognized and played perfect in my recorder, Go figure!
Some burners have no trouble, but reading most of the Nero burn error logs, cmags are usually the culprit and the first thing to trouble shoot for is media quality. It can screw us up in many ways.
The price he paid for that 30 pack was about $15.00! Way too much, especially for cmags. The week before, Staples had the Fuji 30 pack spindles for $9.94 and these were Yuden000-T02. Excellent quality media and $5 cheaper.
Wal-mart media. The sony 1x-8x and maxell are very good, especially the ones made in japan so look those labels over. Wal-mart does not have sales on their media, but will match other competitors if they have the same brand name and spindle sizes. I like Office depot and staples. If you know what to look for,you can get yudens for 33-40 cents apiece and riteks for 28-35 cents apiece.
JoshLogan, Try this:
On one of those cmag discs, try re-ripping it to make another copy. You can either use DVD Shrink or use DVD Decrypter in ISO read and ISO write. See for yourself if those cmags are re-rippable. You can also try them on the fly like I do if you have a separate dvd-rom drive. That's a pretty good test on your media. The low quality stuff will have more burn errors, probably not noticeable by a stand alone player, but when You try to re-rip them,it will be tougher and probably will give you a crc error.
Here's a free handy tool to get the MID code on your media:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/anyd...
Darn, I got that MID code using the dvdidentifier in my spare pc and it won't spit out that blank Memosux media. WTF! I'll have to re-set it.

As far as buying discs from WalMart .. Yes, Maxell and Sony are both really good, but it really doesn't matter if they're made in Japan or Taiwan, both are very good. Some WalMart stores also carry Verbatim discs, these are excellent and, in my opinion, the best media out there!

I think it make a huge difference! I buy ONLY MIJ +R Sony's (Taiyo Yuden). I definately do not consider Prodisc on the same level as TY's (MIT -R's).
Always look for Made In Japan for the top quality on SONY's!!!

i've answered this twice today so copy/paste comes to mind. there's this one which is also the 2nd link in my sig - ..Memorex/CMC - don't let them near your Burner..... - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/195438
but there's also one i was replying to in length today. i'm not gonna get into all this Memorex any more today as it just never ends. i'll copy/paste some from here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/229685
Quote: apart from my own dealings with bad media when i first got into dvd burning, i have no problems with ripping/burning/most computer things so help out here all the more, mainly dealing with other people's bad media woes. I have dealt with literally 1000s of people here afflicted with bad media/lesser quality media and you would not believe how wound up i get with bad/lesser quality media!. Thus i am all the more wary of lesser media as time goes on. I now religiously stick to Verbatim Datalifeplus, TY, and now the latest Verbatim TY (and 50 Ritek G05's as a few buddies round here go on about them so much). But that's all i'll use, as per my siggy, no other media comes near my PC :)
(However i read up more than most on media so that i at least get to try and keep up with what's hot and what's not - i won't waste my own money when there's 1000s of guinea pigs buying other media lol). Anyway, only last night i was recopying from some discs someone sent me that are Princo. and lo and behold i got some CRC errors. Argh i hate bad media (he knows how i hate bad media so deliberately put them on Princo and he knew i'd recopy them anyway).
when i first got into dvd burning, the discs were literally 500 Bulkpaq Orange disks which burnt 100% and were watched 100% without problem. However i then started having problems with newer batches of the same exact discs, and found they were crap quality, and fakes of TY media code to boot. So i am incredibly paranoid about discs which is very odd as i burnt untold 1000s of cd's over the years on untold different media, most of which i still have. The Bulkpaq's have the honour of being shamed in both links in my signature.
So there's some reasons why i won't go near Datawrite again or other 'lesser' quality media
Quote: the trouble with people like Memorex is they use widely varying quality in disc manufacturers, the most appalling being CMC Magnetics (hence the media code 'CMC Mag'). Memorex aren't the only ones who do this, others are HP, TDK, Imation etc.
snippet from a good list here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/155431 (media codes in brackets) -
Memorex DVD+R 16X (CMCMAG M01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG.F01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (MBIPG101-R03-000)
Memorex DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPNR01)
Memorex DVD+R 4x Printable (MCC-003-000)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (CMC MAG E01)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PHILIPSC08)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PRODISCR03)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (CMC MAG.W01)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (INFODISCA01)
Memorex DVD+RW 2.4x (RICOHJPNW01)
Memorex DVD+RW 4x (CMC MAG.W02)
Memorex DVD+RW 4x (MKM-A02)
Memorex DVD+RW 4x (RICOHJPNW11)
Memorex DVD-R 2x (CMC MAG.....)
Memorex DVD-R 2x (TAIYOYUDEN..)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (CMC MAG. AF1)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MBI 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MCC 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (ProdiscS03)
Memorex DVD-R 8X (CMC MAG AE1)
Memorex DVD-RW 1x (ProdiscDVDRW)
Memorex DVD-RW 2x (RITEKW01) MINI DVD-RW 1.36GB
Memorex DVD-RW 2x (RITEKW01....)
Memorex DVD-RW 2x (TDK502sakuM3)
MemorexDVD-RAM 2x (Optodisc)
So....for instance, in that list there are 3 varieties of +R 8x (none of which i'd say are any good really)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (CMC MAG E01)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PHILIPSC08)
Memorex DVD+R 8X (PRODISCR03)
and here...all i'd say where any good are the MCC coded ones -
Memorex DVD-R 4x (CMC MAG. AF1)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MBI 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (MCC 01RG20)
Memorex DVD-R 4x (ProdiscS03)
The trouble is, you wouldn't know which ones you're gonna get, just buy picking up a pack of Memorex. And that's part of the reason why so many people have problems with them, they see the name Memorex, associate it with quality cassettes (for instance) in the dim distant past etc etc, and it's the luck of the draw as to what disc manufacturer actually made them. Hence why i won't buy Memorex, HP, TDK, Imation etc etc etc. There are ways with some companies discs, to work out which ones you're gonna get, ie what sort of tubs they're in, are they -R, what speed are particular discs etc etc but most people on the street just haven't got that knowledge and just don't care about all that. I have feet in both camps, i need to have knowledge of media, but i just want media to work, and work consistently and for good :)
...so i am very particular about what i spend my money on, and what i recommend to others.. see my sig for more bad media woes if you like..
Hope that helps a bit...
Have added Imation as we use them at work and some of them are atrocious -
Imation DVD+R 2.4x (RICOHJPNR00)
Imation DVD+R 4x (CMC MAG.F01)
Imation DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPNR01)
Imation DVD+RW 2.4x (CMC MAG.W01)
Imation DVD+RW 2.4x (RICOHJPNW01)
Imation DVD+RW 4x (RICOHJPNW11)
Imation DVD-R 1x (RITEKG03....)
Imation DVD-RW 1x (OPTODISCK001)
(in fact Imation feature in the 2nd link im my sig)..
At the end of the day we all have choices and our own opinions, but it would be wrong for people such as me to recommend proven inferior quality media. Don't forget many, many people out there read threads such as this and it would be bad if they went away with the message that eveyone can have good results with such media as only a minority will have success with it.
Proven top notch media does not cost more than lesser media. Verbatim datalifeplus 8x +R or -R in ripoff Britain are like £2.49 for 10 so 24 or 25p each. There's even the latest 'Verbatim TY' discs for the same price. We all have choices, and my money goes on top notch media only. i bought 500 Verbatim TY last week, would i buy 500 Memorex of any description, er no!.

ps make sure to read my comments re my company's results with Imation media on 1st page of the 2nd link in my signature. i can't remember exactly which Imations we've got but we've been buying them for like 2yrs so it's fair to see we've used different ones, but needless to say, my manager was happy to stop buying the troublesome Imation (which give trouble nearly everytime a new one is used, even as recently as yesterday) and have started buying Verb's. No more problems - and all this burning is done using 'k3b' in Mandrake Linux by the way

Well Creaky,
I've used Imation DVD-R and the work great, w/o errors.
I do believe the Ritek G03 DVD-R Imations were the ones giving everyone and issue. Also the DVD+R's have been known to vary in results.
The Imation "CMC MAG. AF1" DVD-R as well as a majority listed here:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?dvdmediadvdridsearch=CMC%20...
Have yielded good results.
I know you've been at this longer than me, but I have to disagree with the statement that Imations are not good. (I do agree that they may not be as good as Verbatims)

oops sounds like i mistakenly generalised ALL Imation discs as bad which wasn't my intention.. i'll have a look thru and edit where necessary ...right after i've finished fighting these CRC errors on these Princo discs

Thanks to all those who are helping. :)
Glad to see that I'm not the only one who seems to be having no problems with Imation. Alright... so, Walmart doesn't have sales on their media, but they will match competitors? Does this mean that if I print out some prices/ads for Office Depot, Staples, etc. and bring them with me they will match the price if it's the same exact spindle pack? this can be useful. see, I could drive far away and go to one of those other stores, but then I'd just be spending a lot of extra gas money, which will means in the end I basically will not have saved any money. maybe I'll get lucky and walmart will have some Sony or Fuji discs at decent prices. What are the general opinions on Fugi discs? I've read that some are great and some are pretty bad...

I'm not sure of wal-mart price matching from web site ads or out of town ads. It would be nice though.I forgot about the Verbatim digital movie quality discs that wal-mart has. Pretty pricey at about a buck apiece with a nice case, but still can get these well under 40 cents apiece at best buy.
Those sony codes look pretty decent, but on some of their dash 1x-4x MID code Sony04D1: I have burned some of these from both taiwan and Austria with that exact code. I try to stay away from anything not made in japan/taiwan/and singapore. It was only a 5 pack of austrian dvd's that were given to me.Burned ok,very slow though and nothing important on them. I just don't trust Austrian media.Sony also uses the same MID code of SONY08D1 on their japanese and taiwanese dash 1x-8x media.
Josh, Best buy/circuit city/compusa/and office max usually has some good sales if you have 1 of them close to you.

JoshLogan, my LiteOn recorders love the Verbatim discs the most ...

catfreak- I got the SONY and FUJI MIJ/MIT's mixed up. The FUJI MIT's are Prodisc not the Sony MIT's. That said I still strongly disagree with your statement that it does't matter if they are made in Japan or Taiwan. There is a HUGE difference! The last thing I'd want is RICOHJPN's or SONY08D's when I can get YUDEN002's for the same price!!!!! Huge quality difference.

akyllonen ... My LiteOn set top recorders prefer the MIT Sony and Maxell discs, but I mostly use the Verbatim discs .. the TY discs have a tendency to 'hang up'. Now my PC writer, it doesn't care. I'm waiting on a BrnQ DW1640 and I'm going to use up my stash og Yuden Sony discs and see how it likes them.

Ahhh. I don't have a STR, just a PC burner. My opinions above are for PC based recording, as I have no experience with STR's. My PIE/PIF scans of RICOHJPN's are not even close to my YUDEN002's, thus I always go with the MIJ's. I have a small supply of MIT's left over from a sale at Staples that I use to make backup for friends/coworkers...

Catfreak:
Let me know how the Benq 1640 turns out. I've got my eye on it.
Both my 1620s love everything you throw at them, even cmags.Play virtually anywhere.Well over 99% success rate, even on the fly.
3 other burners I have, couldn't even come close to those benqs for overall performance!
That cmag memorex I tested for the MID code would not eject until I shut down the pc/restart/ and I got it to eject during startup. It only ejects after the burn!!! Very strange!! Good ole MEMOSUX!

Since JoshLogan is burning PS games to DVD media, does it make any difference that it is not a movie but data that he is writing on the disc - is there any real difference as far as media requirements?
Is one form of data more critical than the other?
