I ended up getting a 25 pack of maxel 8x DVD+R. nothing amazing, but they should be better than the imation's I had, even though I had no problems with them.

Which maxell +8x's did you get? Maxell-002-00 that are made in Japan by hitachi or Ritek-r03 that are made in Taiwan?
Use this free handy program to ID those discs:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/dvd_id...
Both MID codes are very good. There's a huge difference between them and those cmags. Those backups longevity should last longer than those cmags.
Longevity: That's another aspect of poor quality media. The dye in them are breaking down quicker than the quality media.Sometimes less than 6 months later.

Could you point me to the data (test results) that show Imations are breaking down w/in six months?
I've heard of Princo's and Aml's doing that, but never Imations.
Thanks

It hasn't been updated for a while, but still has some good info.
Scroll down to the center for dye rot.
I don't have any info on Imation. I know they use Ritek/Ricohjpn-pretty good MID codes on some of their media. Then they have optodisc and cmags on some of their other media-poorer manufacturers. Hard to tell if you get the ritek/ricohs or the lower quality stuff. My benqs will take those riteks and ricohs any day of the week. My stand alones don't like the cmags. Whether they break down quicker than others, I learned it from the pros like scubapete. They found out the hard way when their cheaper manufacturers discs quit working, while their backups on the higher quality discs still work today.
Imation use to be some of the best, but like most other brand names, they outsource them to the lowest bidder.
I'll bet those Ritek/ricoh Imations are the same price as the Optodisc and CMag imations. I can get Yuden000-T02 just as cheap, maybe even cheaper than Imation.
The only issues on my benqs using cmags are: My backup pc: It won't eject a blank disc until I shut it off and reboot. If it is burned, then no problems. My magnavox stand alone player also doesn't recognize some of those cmags.
You can look at the cost of quality media. When you have important stuff to backup, why chance it. Use the quality media on your important data. Myself and my dad bought HP 1118x-b pcs. I had to backup the OS of both pcs because HP doesn't send windows boot discs anymore. You now have to backup your OS either using 10 cds/2 dvd-5s/or 1 dvd DL.You only make 1 set of backup discs.
I used the best performing media I had-Yuden000-T02. I also used the best performing DVD-RW drive I had.I yanked out that HP 640c,and swapped it with my benq 1620 for my own OS backups.
My dad's pc, I used the Yuden000-T02 on his HP 640c Lightscribe. I feel a little better knowing my OS backups are on Taiyo Yudens. I feel sorry for anyone backing up their OS with cmags or any other low quality stuff. They may be paying for it later on.

Saugmon,
Like I had mentioned earlier to Creaky.
Read these:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?dvdmediadvdridsearch=CMC%20...
Many people have had great success with these CMC Mags which include the Imations. My Emerson set top and my NEC-2500 (mad dog) like these discs.
As for the price. I paid 24 cents a piece for them. Bought them mainly because my set top only records at 4x. These were a steal at 24 cents a piece. I only bought them because of the responses at Videohelp.
What I've read is that the Ritek/Imations give people problems.
In any case, I agree that the Yudens and Verbs are the best. They make up a majority of my stash. I also have MBI's, CMC Mags, and TDKs.
I tend to think that you can have a mix of Excellent and Good discs.
You don't always need TY's and Verbs.
Imations are good over here.
Check this out.
Rather interesting the responses on the Yudens TYG01's and TYG02's.
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?dvdmediasearch=&dvdmediadvd...
The poor results with the Yudens must be discs that are fakes.

Gregrod, looking at that 1st page in the videohelp.com site: Looks like a ton of fakes, bulkpak, hyundai,gq,and a ton of others. The fujis looked good,I wouldn't trust the rest.
Office depot +8x 100 pack spindles for $28-$30 a spindle.These are Ritek-ro3.
A lot of burners you have to find what they like. Sometimes I hear a few that don't like taiyo yuden, but cmag memorex works great. It bizarre, but I see it every few weeks or so.
You just have to find the right media that your burner and stand alones like and stick with it.
My set top cyberhome dvd recorder is very picky. Verbatim data life plus +8x is the best media for it. Even though this burner is 4x only speed rated media, the 8x verbs have very few issues with them.
I live 200 yards from a super wal-mart. I see their 100 pack spindles of Imation. I believe they are taiwanese, but I just don't even notice them.I don't even know how much they cost.I look for the hitachi maxells and sony yudens there.

They are they Ritek R03's. I haven't tried any yet. I will later tonight or tomorrow. And hmmmm... if Office Depot sells Ritekn R03's that cheap I might have to started getting those. I'm going to go check if I can order them online. That's a lot cheaper than what I paid.
Eh, I checked and they are $35 for 50, so nevermind they aren't cheaper. that's 70 bucks for a pack of 100.... which is very different from the around 30 bucks price you said..

Ritek Ridata Nranded 8x Dvd-R from Meritline.com for $17 for a 50-pack.
I'm thinking about getting these next time. Much better deals online.
Has anyone ordered from meritline before? Are they reliable? What are some very reliable sites that sell at good prices?

Don't bother with online ordering if you have a Best Buy near you...this week you can get Yudens for $19.95/50pack. They usually have either TY's or Verb's on sale on a weekly basis. RITEK is OK but not the same quality as TY and Verb.

best buy media sales are ONLINE also~ :) the only thing that makes people weary about buying from best buy online is that you DO NOT have the opportunity to check the labels on the spindles you want to buy...best buy could send you MADE IN TAIWAN or MADE IN JAPAN ones, that is why MOST members that are fortunate enough to have a best buy nearby, go there in person to check the various spindles for the MADE IN JAPAN (Fuji & Sony labels media are TAIYO YUDEN media on the 8x DVD+R format- YUDEN000T02- great stuff by the way)
also, there is the additional shipping costs you have to pay, but, if there is not one nearby, guess you really have no choice if you need media that badly, i would recommend supermediastore.com for ONLINE purchases as they are very reputable and their prices are pretty competitive. :) good luck

You know, Best Buy (bestbuy.com) around my house constantly has great deals on different media. Memorex seems to be one of their favorite, long time deals. a 25 pack 16x DVD-R was going for 9.99 for a long time. Now they are down to $7.99. Out of the 20 or so packs I've gone through, I've never once had a problem or a coaster unless the disc I was copying from was dirty. All copies are done with Nero QuickCopy using NEC 3500AG and NEC 3540 (default fw). Even in my DVD triplicator (1 source, 3 target) I've had no probs.
I've tried TDK, fuji as well without problems.
Then I found some Imation 8X at my local OfficeMax for $14.99 for 50 pack. I bought a pack and I'd say one of out every 5 was a coaster. On my triplicator, almost every time one of the target drives would get a read error at random from the imation discs. Never once had a problem with the memorex's. In fact, when I burn 16x Taiyo's I have had more coasters with the Taiyo's than I have with memorex 16x. So maybe its certain drives just handle it better, but I'm extremely happy with memorex. I have not checked the Disc IDs on those yet but will when I get home today to see if they are CMC or whatever.

I am no media expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I personally find it hard to believe Memorex burns better than TYs. That just goes against everything I have read in these threads -- and I have learned a lot of good stuff here. Not saying it isn't true, but damned hard to believe.
BTW, regarding your triplicator -- do all 3 burn at the same time? That must be tuff on the processor.

Yes all 3 go at the same time.. thats how its designed. Its standalone, controlled by a cpu card. I also have another that I'm getting thats 9 at the same time at 12x or 7 at 16x.. and yes i know TY are the best, I'm just going by what's occured for me. To be honest the TY coastered mainly because of read errors from the source disc, I just happen to use more TYs, but really they both burn great for me in all my burners. I will do some memorex tests now and see how they compare.

Burning 16x TYG03s at 8x would seriously defeat the purpose and slow my business down 50%. How can you rate something high quality if you dont use them to their rated potential. The TY's work great at 16x, like I said its mainly bad source discs. I've never had a faulty TY (meaning never has the drive suspended while burning, this is what happens on the triplicator device, if one media goes bad, the rest continue) and I've never had a faulty memorex either.
but I did run some nero dvd speed tests last night tho. My Memorex are CMC and tested at max speed and 4x speed both came in around quality of 70. Which I agree is pretty bad. havent tested TYs there yet, but I've seen the results all over the forums here. So yea its safe to say memorex is crappy, but compared to others like imation, memorex is plenty decent as long as there is no failures during burn.
I also do verify on 1 out of 7 discs, and all verify normally.

Oh I know the old story of burning audio CD's too fast some people claimed to hear clicks and pops and dvds you might see a glitch on the screen for a moment so short that it means nothing. The stats and errors from Nero are so detailed, but to the viewer you will see no noticeable difference. Since its my home business, I burn about 600 Discs a week on my multiple burning equipment, all at 16x, all without any complaints from customers, and without any noticeable difference when I watch them on my own. Don't be scared by a few numbers in the disc tests. This however is all IMHO, do what you like, but if you have the skill to be able to watch a movie at 8x and then at 16x and notice any difference (assuming its from a clean original) then power to you.
