Loving the Streamliners, think I might retrofit my HAF with one of those. The CPU cooler looks pretty pricey for what it is, but it should perform relatively well.

Looks good bigwill! That's a nice case. I've always been a fan of Cooler Master. I might jump on an HAF or a Stacker soon.
I might get a chance at a discount 9800GTX+ later next week. All I need to do is trade the guy my 9600GT and $50 :) Same guy who got me the 780G board. He found out the 9800 won't fit in his case and he'd be switching to a 9600GT anyway. Don't ask me because I don't get his reasoning either. But he seems happy to make the trade :D

Well, better than a 9600GT by about 30-40%, but also about 30-40% of the power of you pair of 4870s.. hehe
My PC actually shut down last night through the CPU temp (main not cores) going over 105ºC. My room at home gets quite hot. Idle temps were about 59-60C. At first I thought the HSF or Thermal paste had gone bad, but opening the window dropped it to 56C. Clocking back from 3.9 to 3.65 cut them to 53C. I've since moved back to York and idle is now 32ºC. What a difference a room makes!
The main reason for it I think is that the PC being to the right of the monitor, the case fans suck all that hot air in.

Estuansis,
I would think that because the 9600GT is almost as good a performer as the 9800GTX+, and will fit in his case, that would be his prime reason. It's as close to what he wants as he can get, and still fit in his computer!

I won't make a big deal out of this Russ, but the 9600GT and 9800GTX+ compare in the same way that the X2 7750 and Socket 939 X2 4200+ do. There's slightly more in it than perhaps you think.

Yes sometimes the 9800GTX is almost twice as fast. High resolutions with AA especially will make this apparent. Games like Crysis and FEAR 2 will be hugely improved coming from the 9600GT. My friend isn't too worried though as he has a 19" widescreen. I, on the other hand, plan to use it with 22" and 24" widescreens. There the power of the 9800GTX will shine.
Basically, on paper and in practice, the 9600GT is maybe 50% of the 9800GTX. Lower resolutions don't show this as they are more CPU dependent. Though, the 9600GT is much closer in performance to the 9800GTX than the 7600GT was to the 7900GTX. It's less stripped down than previous budget cards, yet it still lacks the horsepower of its big brothers.

It's a similar card to the 8800GS and 8800GT, sits halfway between them.

Right. And more often than not, it's closer to the 8800GS. The 8800GT is in a different league altogether. The 9600GT is still a good performer though and was very pleasing to me for the price. It plays a lot of new games at the highest settings without much issue. It's actually slightly faster than the HD3870, which puts it firmly in the mid-range, unlike what its price might suggest. Not to mention they scale excellently in SLI.

I'd actually consider the HD3870 low-midrange now the HD4670 near as damnit matches it with a 40W power consumption and $70 price tag. On this basis the 9600GT is also low-midrange. 9600GTs are $80 or so and require external power.
Despite the performance it offers, I would place the HD4830 as 'midrange', at $90, especially since its rival, the 9800GT is around $110.

Where does that leave the 9800GTX + then? The high-mid range?

Also midrange. The GTS250, GTX260-192 and HD4850 are mid-high end, the HD4870, HD4890, GTX260 216, GTX275, GTX280 and GTX285 are high end.

the 192 core is only about 5-10% less than the 216 core, wouldnt call it mid high, and the GTS250 and the 9800GTX+ are the exact same....

Yeah the GTS250 is basically the exact same card. And more often than not, it puts up a good fight with the HD4850. I'd put the two equal as well. This is purely in performance terms of course. Price to performance the HD4850 wins hands down.

Depends on the benchmark, in some instances there's a significant difference, especially in minimum frame rate (this goes for both cases)

Will what case is that? it looks like a Dell case? from the front that is????
ok guys i took my board back out to swap out my Coolers i took off the AC7 freezer pro and reinstalled the nicely lapped coolermaster hyper TX2. right now at idle im back down to the low 40's(C) like Bigwill i dont have on the ac and the ambient temp here in the room is about 76-78f so im happy with that and under load(IBT) it only got up to 61c instead of the 74c it did before.
i dont know if i just had a bad connection not of thermal paste or what. but i did run IntelBurn Test at max and it passed nicely. im running OCCT now.
oh yea im only at stock speeds also, havent OC'd anything yet.
