Newegg is a good place to buy, but I bought a BenQ 1650 there that didn't work and I had to pay to ship it back which was a little over $7.00. Even though they sold it to me they said it wasn't their fault that it didn't work and I would have to pay to ship it back. It wasn't my fault either, but I still had to pay. The replacement worked fine although it took two weeks to get. This is the only bad component I've ever received from them, but this is the only company I've dealt with that requires you to pay to return a defective product.

hm1..Really could not tell U about overseas
Heres Toll Free: 1(800)390-1119 for NewEgg
Local: 1(909) 395-9046
Fax: 1(909) 395-8907
Don't really know how Toll Free works overseas either
U would probably be better off finding someone closer to home.
It does'nt happen often, but just in case it don't work.
What country U in anyway?
What burners are available to U ? Give us a short list maybe we can help that way in getting U a more compatible burner.
Everybody brags on how long their burner last 5-6 yrs, personaly I would rather retire a working burner after 2-3 yrs.U can sell it & get 1/2 to 2/3's $ back.Buy a new 1..My experience is'nt that great, but burners have moving prts, they wair, laser can get weak, definetly they get dirty. All this contributes to problems in burning, along with flawed media

Hi rick5446
I'm in the UK.
I wil probably seek a local supplier but it means me going to a computer fair. The high street retailers have limited options with Sony, Liteon being the most widely available.
You are write, most drives have their time but i feel that media is the major cause.
Good media should be universal.
I may wait for a while as the best burners are still quite expensive.
My current drive still has 6 months or so to go before i upgrade. or i'll make it a back up drive.
Thansk for the tips too.

hm1..Good luck..Like I was saying my Plextor was giving me probs.,but I still use it,as with some Disc's it's the only drive that will let me re-copy certain Disc's.If U got a friend in the USA,U might consider letting [him-her] buy it for U,check that its working properly, then ship it to U.But that could turn into a problem also.Have no idea what the shipping would be.Probably more then what U would normaly pay

Yes I would recommend them. I don't know if they ship out of country. I have only ever received one thing from them that was bad and they did replace it. I was just sort of peeved for having to pay to ship it back. I have ordered quite a few things from them with no problems. I live in Arizona and most of their stuff is shipped from California which is fairly fast since it only has to come about 400 miles. The burner that didn't work was shipped from New Jersey which took a day or two longer to get. I had to ship it back to California and I guess someone had to look at it and then they sent another one from New Jersey. This all took about two weeks. I believe that they are one of the better on line places to shop at other than this one minor inconvenience.

Hi rick5446 and forkndave
Thanks for teh advice. I'll check out a few more UK sites and see if there are any alternatives.
Interesteing enough i bought some Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs with the TG03 Dye.
I previously bought discs with the TG02 Dye and find the TG02 far superior in terms of compatibility.
I'm worried its shades of Ritek and the G04 and G05 Dyes
Anybody else experience these issues ?

hm1...Not really! But every so often I get a bad burn for 1 reason or another..Ya know all European DO's & DON'Ts are a lot different then in USA..So maybe U are getting a Bullsh$t media..It could be a moister problem where the wholesale house stores them.I've heard theirs a lot of fog & rain over your way
I've used Tys,Ritek,& years ago Prodisc back when they were reliable.
Started useing Prodisc cause I'm quite frugal.I was really impressed 500 Discs & not 1 bad. Then all of a sudden every other disc was bad,so quit useing them.
Well, anyway, your best bet is to use what works for U,until you can get another burner.Keep a few of the media U are having problems with,so when U do get another burner U can test it.GOOD LUCK

Hi rick5446
Thanks for the tips.
Yes, media seems to be so up and down these days but what can you do ?
I'll keep plugging away and probably get a second burner in time too.
Most of my old Ridisc come up as prodiscs
Thanks again

Here is mine.
Three weeks ago I bought two 15 pack's of Fuji DVD+R DL at BB.
The first five were all coaster's. I checked them and they labeled at Ritek. I wont be buying Fuji DL again. Ill stick with Verbatim.

I cannot understand why anyone reading this forum can consider buying anything else but Taiyo Yuden. Their superiority and reliability is just way beyond other media. If one reads just half the postings here it becomes clear that that is the message of most of the experts and experienced. While plugging, I would also recommend SMS as they too are above average in reliability and their customer service very responsible. They have never questioned my returning a product and crediting me for it. Just want to affirm the obvious.

@frbernard: Well, I can think of a couple of reasons: 1) Verbatim is an excellent alternative with comparable quality, and 2) Verbs (and perhaps a few other decent brands, like Sony when they sell relabeled TYs) often go on sale or have rebates, providing great quality discs at about half the price.

@delateur I am going to take your advice and try some verbatim. You could be right. As to how you can tell if Sony media is really TY before you buy them is something I am unable to discern.

@frbernard: The only ways I know of to tell if Sony is selling TY media is 1) The foam spacer, which is octagonal on my 8x DVD+Rs, and 2) they are MIJ (Made in Japan, shown on the label if you look for it). However, I don't believe that there are any 16x Sonys that are currently relabeled TYs, and that's what I'm seeing most of the time in stores, or the 8x are quite often MITs (Taiwan). I'm sure that someone with more Sony experience than I could tell you if it's still possible to find relabeled TY media out there. I haven't looked in quite some time, once I discovered that Verbatims would produce the results I wanted.
Really, it's pretty much either Verbatim or TYs for me, nowadays, because I can buy them sight unseen and know I'm getting good stuff. I only lean toward Verbatim because they are a LOT cheaper on sale, especially if you only buy +Rs, like me.

delateur..frbernard..Without trying to second guess what type U are buying.Would it not be a lot simpler to buy on line from a reputable supplier.Definetly a lot more convient,on line prices always beat the sales prices of local retailers.Even at their highest [shopping wisely]I've never had to pay more then $0.38 a piece for Tys,Ritek,or Verbs.Which comes to be $19.00 per 50pk

rick5446: I do buy online from SMS and really benefit from that. I just bought 200 TY's with a complete set of ink for my Epson 320 for about $70 with shipping. You are absolutely right!

The absolute worst I've ever bought were by KHyperMedia ....total junk. Not one single burn so I email and complain. I returned them for a spindle of new blank +rs, when I received it, not one single sucessful burn on any of them either. I've had some that were awesome and some so-so but that brand, for me, holds the record ... Zero burns ... can something be any worse LOL?

@rick5446: .38 a disc is certainly not bad, especially for +Rs, -Rs always run a bit cheaper online, so the savings locally aren't as pronounced (local prices don't seem to price + and -Rs differently). However, when I do take advantage of a sale, whether it's online or locally, I get my discs for anywhere from .22 to .32 for DVD+Rs, .32 is for the standard local sale of $30 for 100, or $15 for 50, and the .22 is usually for Verbatims that are on sale or have a rebate offer. For me, saving $6-16 per 100 is worth it, if the quality is respectable. I see some have had problems with Verbatims, but I've burned quite a few (150 or so) and they're working fine in any player I've tried (+R, I'm staying away from -R because my results have been so much better as far as compatibility is concerned).

delateur..I was quoteing the highest,& I never pay freight.I only buy DVD-R,as I have an old Appex that does'nt play +'s even [booktype, bookset].Also a Zenith that I bought last yr,that does'nt particularly like them.
Verbs are an excellent Disc, but I steer clear of them also,as I've found a few players that won't play them.My neighbor has a Coby & RCA that won't reconize Verbs [booktype, bookset]or other wise

@rick5446: Yes, it's become pretty clear since I started reading this thread that there is no "perfect media" for everyone's needs. Depending on the players used, you might find that even high end media won't work properly in different types of players. What I'm seeing oftentimes is when people upgrade their players (not simply to have media compatibility, but because the old players are just beginning to fail, period, which they discover when playing originals), these newer players are far more compatible with booktyped +R media, due to advances made in laser technology that is incorporated into newer players. But, until a person wants to make that upgrade, I have nothing but good things to say about TY or Verbatim media of + or - flavors. There are many variables that go into making a good backup, like having a decent drive, burning at the proper speed, and so forth, but all of that is meaningless if you don't begin with good quality media, and I've been extremely pleased with both TY and Verbatim +Rs, and they perform equally well in my players (Sanyo and JVC standalone, SlimPS2, and LiteOn 1693S and Benq 1655 rewriters), as well as those of my friends (Pioneer standalone, and an ancient Toshiba standalone).

Does anyone know what the deal is with supposed Ritek or Taiyo Yuden discs which DVD Identifier won?t even recognize as a disc, let alone spit out a media code?
I recently bought 500 supposed Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs from an Ebay seller, who guaranteed authenticity. None of my three writers would recognize them as media, using DVD Identifier (?Media Not Present?). All attempts to burn using Nero 6, in all three writers, resulted in a message to ?please insert empty disc to write to?. Sent them back and got partial credit.
Then ordered 200 supposed Ritek DVD-R from Meritline, which arrived yesterday, and got exactly the same results. DVD Identifier says ?Media Not Present? and Nero burn attempts result in the same message to ?please insert empty disc to write to?.
500 supposed Ritek also arrived yesterday from a different Ebay seller (who guaranteed they would identify as Ritek in DVD Identifier). They identify as RICOHJPN, rather than Ritek, but will allow a burn. Should I keep them? Are Ricoh decent media?
Any suggestions on how to get good, non-fake, media at a decent price? I need media with an unbranded (clean) shiny silver top, don?t mind a 4X (not overly concerned with speed), don?t really care whether it is +R or ?R. I am about at the last of my 600 Ritek 4X DVD+R which have worked just fine.
