Quote: By the way, I supposed that forums were created to help people, specially those who are still crawling on computer's world. Like me, many people are still discovering how to deal with their machines. And like me, who believed are buying an excellent computer. Could be rashness, but it's only lack of knowledge. Congratulations for those who are already on the top!
That sounds like a bit of paranoia. Forums are here to help and no one was putting down your lack of knowledge. Everyone has to start somewhere. I only noted others have had the same problem and you accidentally bought a problem drive besides creating the problem for yourself with the wrong media. You're not alone on anything you've done. Hopefully we all learn from our mistakes and we've all made them. Good luck with your future burning endeavors and someone here on one of the forums will be willing to help if you run into another problem.
I made a mistake myself. I didn't pay attention to the supported media because I was keying on the drive being a known problem.

Depends on which you got. Use a utility such as DVD Identifier, DVDInfoPro, or one of the ones included with some of the recording suites and then post the brand and manufacturer here and we will then know what you purchased that was made in Taiwan. I use the Sony 8X +R made in Taiwan that is the Sony generic and I get excellent results. The Sony manufactured Sony is considered one of the better discs on the market. Ricoh manufactured media is another I find that's excellent quality. So, not all Taiwan media is bad. Shop carefully though when you see the MIT.

We should start a poll on the worst DVD+R out there. I would have to vote for CompUSA's DVD+R 4x. Thought I give them a try at $21 for 100 Stack and thought even if I got 50% coaster material ...."what the he--" what have I lost? Ho Ho...they are so bad that I had to burn them at 2.4 speed with my Benq 1620. Now time is precious when you get to my age and I determined they weren't worth it for the time it took on the computer as well as the poor quality readings they rendered with Nero's cd-dvd speed check.
But the pay off came when I tried to play some of them on my cheap Cyberhome Progressive Scan player (only half of them so far will play on it but all will play on the Toshiba) Never the less, CompUSA has my vote for the world's worst!

jwg30..Stick with TY's & Ritek..Buy them on the net..buy Hub printable DVD's..even for magic-markers you've got a nice white surface...Or do what I did..Buy an Epson R200 or R300..They give your Disc a professional look..I'M 60 & believe me pasteing those funky labels on your Disc is a pain in the holy hanna barbara..not only that I've had a couple of friends who've had them come off in their DVD Player..That can't be fun...But lessons learned..BUY GOOD MEDIA,you will find remarkably priced media,I have'nt paid more then 40cents since I can remember..& thats only when I don't get them on sale or with a special discount coupon..I almost never pay shipping...RULE OF THUMB!!Buy 200 & start shopping at 100 used..believe me the bargains are out their..I just bought 100 Verbatims Hub Printable for 24 bucks + 7.00 shipping, thats only 31cents a piece..& I know if I get a coaster its more then likely my fault..Maybe I'll get 1 in 200,thats damn good odds

Which goes to show, CMC is selling media to companies other than Memorex. If it's Memosux due to CMC, then there must be some Verbatisux as well. CMC actually sells media to several brands.

There is no way Verbatim would trust CMC Magnetics with it's dye. Yes, there is no doubt that CMC does sell it's dye to other companies other than Memorex, but I highly doubt it would do so with Verbatim.
-Mike
EDIT : The site I posted above, merely sells fakes in stake of Verbatim dye.

Verbatim's house brand, or at least corporately connected is the Mitsubishi (MCC). Also sold under the brand has been Ricoh media, as well as the Taiyo Yuden. Also, CMC has produced some of the Verbatim. I'm not sure about the one you mentioned. So, it's not a matter of Verbatim dye, it's a matter of who they purchase a particular batch from. A TY disc from Verbatim is the same as you get from Sony, Fuji, or under the TY brand itself. They manufacture the same discs with the same production codes with the difference being the labels on the back.

Any "Verbatim Dye" that CMC have produced are purely fake.

Not sure from where or whom they got this batch from, but they are obviously fake. Apparently there have also been complaints that they used to sell fake TY's.

The dealer may be selling fakes with different manufacturer codes, but in the past, I've purchased branded Verbatim from reliable vendors and the manufacturer codes have varied. Verbatim is only a brand, much as Memorex. They don't manufacture their own product. Try using DVD Identifier, DVDInfopro, or pay attention to the recording apps for the manufacturer codes of different brands. Here's a database listing of some of CMC's customers.

Scan Disc would have told us more about how the media records (with something recorded). Unless your drive is fully supported, the quality readings from Nero aren't usable. I have a Plextor and HP and neither are fully supported with Nero's CD-DVD Speed utility.

Sony +R have been TY and Sony depending on manufacture, Japan and Taiwan respectively. Both rate top grade. Most Verbatim. They do sneak in the occasional CMC. MIJ and those with AZO dye are a good bet. They TY branded media and Ricoh are a good bet as well. TY is the better known here at AD. I've been using Ricoh under various brand names for years. They make some of the better +R for some of the name brands. Most name brands made in Japan are a safe bet. If the Sony works good, no need to change. Using DVD Identifier, what manufacturer makes your Sony?

Mik3h sorry but I have to agree with Brobear Verbatim did sell out to CMC Magnetics for a while but since learned there lesson however there is still a few knocking around especially on that site you posted, the Verbatim pearl whites are CMC MAG media ID.
If you want a good site in England that have a detailed description of what media ID you are buying into before you actually purchase then just check my profile.
Monkey75 an easy way to go about it is if you have either a Samsung, BenQ or Plextor go for the + format as these burners highly favor that side especially with booktyping ability.
However if you have a Lite-on, Pioneer, Aopen or Asus go for the minus format.
I dont know which formats runs best with LG, NEC or Sony however it is always useful to remember that if you have a low end burner then mediocre media will suit you down to a tee but if you have a high end burner then high quality media will work magic.
My vote goes for Taiyo Yuden (TYG**/YUDEN000T**) or if worse comes to worse and I can't get any then I go for Verbatim (MCC*******.
PS My worse media vote goes to Datawrite Yellows (CMC MAG) after about 5 months they have a tendency to break down on you.

Imation is a brand well known for it's unswerving commitment to selling media at the lowest price, regardless of quality. They often use the absolute worst media manufacturers, because those are the ones that give them the lowest priced media to slap their name on. Avoid Imation like the plague. 95% of the time, you're going to get junk media with low quality dye that will either produce a coaster, or a disc that degrades somewhere in the realm of 10x faster than any quality media out there.

I'm not aware of what Imation is selling now. However, for their DVD +R offering, they used to sell Ricoh media. I probably have 100 or more backups done on Ricoh from various brands and know it's "good stuff". Ricoh manufactures (or has in the past) media for many of the top brands, including Verbatim. As I said, I'm not sure what Imation is doing now, but in the past, they didn't always go with low quality merchandise.

Sorry, brobear, I didn't mean to imply that they never used decent media, but since they're "all over the map" in terms of quality, most people I've chatted with, here and elsewhere, say to avoid Imation, simply because you can never be sure exactly what you're going to get. Unlike some other medias out there that have a certain "minimum quality level" Like TYs, Verbatims, Sony, Maxell and the like, Imation will use the worst media out there if the price is right. I know they have used decent media types in the past, but since there's no real consistency to it, it makes Imation very hard to recommend to anyone. :)

Now that post makes good sense. Question using Imation because you may have trouble figuring out what you get. That's one of the reasons I'm not using any of the brand now.
