just so theres a clear understanding, my ps3 wont work with any disks, cd rom, cd music, dvd, blue ray movie and ps3 game, nothing unlike most other peoples problems that let them do some formats, mine wont do anything, when a cd is inserted the lazer goes red and does the 3 pumps while lit, the cd never begins to turn, and i never see a blue light...at what point does the cd spin? after it recognizes a cd? with the blue or the red? im swaying to buying the kit but im hoping that someone that had the same exact problem writes back and tells me what they did to fix it

As mentioned i replaced the whole BD compartment with another from a 80GB to my 60GB and works perfect now, in your case it sounds like the BD laser and standard laser are both dead or both have malfuntioned.
2 options:
1st: Its best you replace that whole compartment then to have to buy a laser for it, i have wasted $150 just for a new laser and it didnt fix my problem.
2nd: Try searching around the net and see if it could just be a wire inside the drive that could be dissconnected or loose, because its out of the ordinary for BOTH lasers to fail at one time. This maybe a good fix and hope it is... then to but whole compartment
Good luck mate

does anyone know who to cal/ where to go to find out if your problem is covered by the warranty? I know it's in the manual, but wear and tear to one person can be seen as abuse by another.

hi guyz
my PS3 stopped working this morning, i was playing NFS Prostreet and it frooze, so i quit the game, never worked, so i switched it off (not a good idea, but i already did in the apst and didnt do anything). now its broken. the disc gets in fine. but it dosent load, so i dissemble the Br unit, switched it on, no light, no spinning.
should i replace the Lens ? full unit ? or IC board ?
there's like 5$ bucks difference between the lens & full unit.
those parts are being high priced these times.
thnkx alot.

Probably just the lens unit but if the difference is only $5 then choose whatever would be an easier replacement.

I dont know when you jumped onto this thread but here's a post of mine that I linked to a while back, around September.
http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstat...scending&page=1
As you can see, I replaced mine with a brown clip. It has been working fine since then, although there were some brief issues with Killzone 2 where that would not read unless I tried inserting the disc many times. But I haven't had that issue since a few days after the game came out.

i'll try to get a lens that match mine, if i dont, i'll just getthe other.
if it dosent work, well, i'll do another research.
BTW, did you get that KES-400AAA brand new ? judging by the box, it seemed brand new at the time.

Hi guys. I'm new. I stumbled upon this site since... uhmmm... this is the only site I can find that has extensive discussions about the blu ray drive of the PS3.
Here's my predicament. I've got a PS3 here that does not pull any disc in. There is no disc inside. Everything inside the drive works so far from what I can tell. It's only that whenever I try to put a disc in it, the blue led just blinks and the drive will not pull the disc in. I guess the optical sensor works. I've already tried using three working blu ray drives (with their respective optical sensors) with the daughterboard of the PS3 that is having this issue. Even though I did that, the disc still does not get pulled in. What can be the cause of this issue? Possible corrupted firmware perhaps. I managed to update the firmare to 2.76. And I also reset the PS3 to its factory default with full format (took 3 hours and 30 minutes) but still to no avail. I tried holding the eject button for 30 seconds to one minute. I forced a fan test. I did almost everything I can think of. Any suggestions guys?

This was my problem exactly. See my above post. It only cost $50 to have it fixed. From what I understood, something came misaligned or off track. If you feel comfortable, open up your blu ray drive.

There's no way for me to truly know, but I was told by the seller that it was new.
Also, just a little nitpicking here, but the KES-400AAA is the laser carriage + the whole frame with the motor and rods... that whole rectangular tray that mounts using 4 screws. The KES-400A is just the laser carriage, which is what I replaced. No biggie, and its easy to confuse the parts. I just don't want you to go searching for something with the wrong terms.

ok then, spoke too soon, purchased the lazer from yallstore.com. the ad said "new sony part" the item had scratches on some of the internal plastic so i assumed it was a refurb, installed it anyway, worked great for 2 hours on mercinaries 2, then i went to play gh metallica and evil disc load bubble came back, all formats of disc's not reading, upon diagnosis, same problem, blue ray lazer dead, no disc spinning at all, going to return, thank god i didnt leave feedback on ebay yet.

KEM-400AAA is the full thing with the lens + deck, KES-400AAA is the lens only.

Partially correct. But thanks, Your post just reminded me of what it really is.
I think we better set this straight in clear definition for once. This all comes from a bunch of confusion but here are the real names for single-lensed parts:
KES-400A - Laser carriage (you can read it right on there)
KEM-400AAA - Carriage and deck
You guys will find stores selling them with other names but this is all a result of confusingly similar denotations. I even got it wrong myself earlier.

nice picture, that clearly define everything.
on other topic, has anyone figure out what is wrong with the lens, or what frosted on the board of this lens ?
maybe just a diode or a capacitor or a resistance ?
it might simpler than we might think
dunno just a thought...

Earlier in this thread we seemed to conclude that consoles with disc read errors relating to the laser optics and not the controller board's firmware had bad diodes. There was a site that sold the necessary diodes, and they are much cheaper than the whole KES-400A, but it is a more complicated repair job that involves tiny screws, potentiometers, and soldering. If you're up to that you can look back in this thread and find the link to that site and give it a go yourself. There are no guarantees but for those of us who found that there were no diode flashes on boot, we believed this was the only plausible cause for malfunction. On the other hand, we could be entirely incorrect, and perhaps this can't be simplified to the same single problem that is occurring in all of our bad units without variation.

I ran accross this forum after a result from 'blu ray drive ps3 fix'.
Anyway, recently my blu ray drive stopped reading any discs so I went ahead and bought a replacement KES-400A unit from Ebay. So I went ahead and replaced it and started reading discs again.
So now after a few hours it has stopped reading discs again :(
So what could it be??
Could it be that I bought a faulty laser unit?
OR that something else is wrong with the drive??
Any suggesstions will be appreciated. Thanks!!

If it fixed it at all then you know the KES-400A was your problem. And yes we have seen this "Few hours" luck happen before. GO back maybe 10 pages in this thread and there were some people who replaced lasers but got less than a day out of the "new" part. This is a quality control issue of some sort. But can you tell me what color your ribbon clip is? (when you installed the new laser you had to clip on the gold/brown ribbon cable; I want to know the color of the clip that it connects into. We have seen white and brown clips).
Anyway I'd contact your seller about this and try getting a refund/replacement ASAP.

Do you mean where at the bottom of the drive where the ribbon connects to the board? The smallest clip right?? It's black and white. There is a brown and white next to it though.
And I saw the return policy of the seller and I can only get a replacement. I would rather have my money back though.

If you look up this page you will see a giant picture of a KES-400A, with a brown (with a black retention) ribbon clip. That's the one I'm referring to.
That's cool if you want your money back. Would you try someone else or try Sony or give up or whats the plan?

Oh I see....then it's black and white and so was my old laser unit. So it's different from the picture above.
If I can get another laser unit from the seller and it gives me the same problem then eventually I will have to ring up Sony and pay the stupid $150 fee(mine's a 40GB model out of warranty BTW).
But if I get another KES-400A unit and gives me the same problem?? What else could you think that could be the problem.
And thanks for helping me out.

They don?t test their lasers as I had the same problem with two of them. Also I don?t believe that any of them are new. Other sellers have told me they are all refurbs just some test and some don?t. I found one good vender and stuck with him. Everything I?ve purchased has worked on the first try and is still working.
One positive thing is they will give you your money back.
