I have opened up my PS3 and found that the blu ray laser lights up brightly (blue violet) and the worm gear moves the assembly along the slider. The funny thing is the spindle spins the disk like half a turn then stops... half a turn then stops, repeatedly. It spins (meaning the motor works) but it doesnt spin up fully.
What on earth could be the issue? If all motors appear to be working and the laser is lighting up brightly I think the only thing left that might be at fault is the IC controller board. I seriously hope not because I refuse to send it back to Sony as I will get someone elses horrible refurb.
Im a very casual gamer and it has had moderate use, I dont even own any blu ray films and only use the drive for 5 games! How on earth could it have died already!
I have had this same issue many times with 40gb,60gb and 80gb's. It seems to me that the laser is not strong enough to actually read the disc..I have fixed over 25 of these and 100% of the time I have solved the issue by replacing the laser with a new one. I am not saying that's the only thing it could be but chances are that will solve the problem...let me know how you come out when you replace the laser....

Thanks for the replies,
Regarding the laser not being strong enough to read the disk I think you right Boneyard because yesterday I went to Sony centre and managed to actually speak on the phone to one of the guys who actually fixes the consoles at the repair centre.
He said that in most cases the broken units they recieve have either had lasers which have experienced a drop in voltage or have had the mirror or lens out of adjustment or dirty on the inside. Opening up the actual laser assembly might reveal more about whats wrong and it might be as simple as adjusting a part. I dont really have the guts for that though!
So basically the laser still lights but is either dropped in intensity due to voltage or is not able to focus properly due to being impared in some way within the laser assembly.
One poster mentioned on the 3rd page of this thread I think about using the PS3 in humid areas and how the laser can create oxidation on the inside of the lens mirror. I find this really interesting as it has got alot more humid reciently but I can't believe that the laser would be so damn delicate (half the humid countries lasers would break!).
I still can't believe my laser has gone after 1 odd year of use, it would be great if its just a bit of dirt on the inside of the lens which needs wiping off! and sony want a bucket load for fixing that!
I have one question, are all the replacement lasers available on the net or ebay compatible with any region PS3? So would a US or UK bought KEM-400AAA laser replacment kit work in any PS3? I.e. are they all the same?
Thanks

Hi all,
I purchased a replacement blu ray drive from ebay and it worked fine for about a week, but failed again after 1 week playing GTA4.
I honestly think it's a waste of time spending more money on this console and trying to fix it yourself.
Further note, I think Sony are absolute sc*mbags regarding this issue. Clearly numerous PS3 users have experienced this issue worldwide and after explaining this to them, accusing them of selling faulty hardware, they went on a major defense fo their product and told me off! My reply was basically f*ck off! They were not getting there ?150 for repair off me, and certainly won't until they admit that there is a problem with blue ray in the PS3
However, you can purchase a blue ray drive for around ?50 from ebay, good condition, good delivery time. I am a hardware techi myself for many years and replacing the unit was easy. However, my PS3 failed after 1 week (literally played two games - PES soccer and then 30 minutes of GTA - and it failed) so there may be another issue with my PS3. In saying that - on other sites where users reported failed blue ray on their PS3 , they have replaced the blu ray unit themselves and it has worked fine.
Sony are scumbags, PS3 may be dumped so if there are any interested buyers of the PS3 or 5 games let me know!
I'll sign that petition also

This problems seems to be occurring alot now, same thing happened when i downloaded firmware 2.60 and playing call of duty 5 online then it froze, so i restarted ps3 and game play will last till it loads to next stage and freezing occurs again, then it wont go past the ps3 logo, and till then it wont read anymore, i get an error message of strange numbers starting with 8------ cant remember the numbers but i googled it and came up with blue ray drive failure. I only had it for3 months and it died on me. So i bought a whole new blue ray laser and installed it myself, im an electrical person so i know what im doing, i placed it in and same thing... not reading ANY blue ray games or movies just reading cd's dvd+r etc. So everyone saying buy a whole new blue ray unit, I THINK NOT unless someone can confirm it is working. Already so far a few has attempted to replace to no avail. MY OPINION: I think everyone who plays games online has this problem, or those who have downloaded the last firmware 2.60, ive downloaded the new firmware as others say it would fix this problem...NO IT DIDNT i aslo downgraded to previous firmware before 2.60...NO DIDNT WORK and restored the whole harddrive...STILL NOTHING.
So now ive read it has something to do with the chip that the firmware has corrupted and you cannot do a system restore or replace BD unit...

I can confirm that this is definitely not a software issue. I have not updated the firmware and I have never played online let alone connected my PS3 to dsl/broadband. It was just coincidence that the blu ray failed aroudn teh same time the firmware was released. If you look at it in more detail this issue has only occurred on all PS3 boxes released from late 2007. I have not found any from an earlier year. My guess is that Sony released a very big bad bacth of PS3's from 07 onwards...either that or there is a huge fundamental flaw in the blu ray / ps3 technology.
I got my PS3 as a pressy in Dec 2007, so it still has the same firmware from that date. I would not be a heavy PS3 user at all...the odd game of football when I had vistitors. As well as that I was given GTA in April last year. Only started to play it after Christmas, and I'm sure it's nowhere near complete! haha!! Really looking at getting an Xbox for my own personal gaming and the wii seems to be cathcing on big time in Ireland.
Another thing to the entry before mine, if yah only had the PS3 3 months, it's well in warrenty and you would have bene able to get a rpelacement directly from the retailer....that is of course if you purchased it yourself and you did not buy it from someone that had it over a year.

Lol there goes my theories and assumptions. Thanks for pointing that out, now i belive it is a major flaw with Sony and now i just have 2 more of my friends with this same issue! We are heavy players online with Call of duty and i told them my issue and they both laughed and said the 60GB models are old and dont have the latest things the 80 and 40 have. Which they have and now they both have these same issues. One of there PS3 BD froze yesterday and the other earlier today. Thats too much of a coincidence. My PS3 is not warranted since i bought it off a friend who's warranty expired. If anyone can point us (non warranted) in the right direction to remedy this problem would be awesome!

I guess the bad batch is right. My buddy next door is a HUGE sony fan, and got his PS3 the DAY it came out in the US. it hasn't failed yet.
However, Like mine that failed a month ago, I'm getting calls from my other roommates (who pointed and laughed at me when mine broke) that their PS3s aren't working. I thought it was just the 40 gig versions but a guy downstairs bought the new 160 gig one and it failed in 2 weeks! holy crap!

(Blu-ray and DVDS) I opened up the unit and I can see that when I insert a disc the laser lighits up for about 5 seconds and the lens goes up and down and the disc doesnt spin. I am not sending my unit to Sony because they arent getting any money from me. But I want to know which part I am suppose to buy from PSXBOY.com on from the link below.
http://www.psxboy.com/index.php?gOo=goods_search_list.dwt&gcat=67
PS3 Lens with Mechanism KEM-410ACA?
PS3 KES-410A Laser lens?

I would go with the KEM-410ACA part. I see this part is "out of stock"!!! It goes to show that demand for this replacement part is high!!
hey PM me once you have replaced it and let me know how you get on.
cheers

you will have to look at the laser and see which type you have. by the sounds of it you would have to replace the whole assembly. if yours has 2 separate lasers, you will need the kem-410aca. or if it only has one laser, you will need the kem-400aaa.

Sorry if this has been asked, but I took a part my drive due to some pictures being put inside. When I put it back together the cd is blocked from being put back in. Is there a guide on how to put it back together? I have tried the reset method and no luck.

then teh only thing I can suggest is to open it back up, look at the pics and make sure everything looks in place. There are also two guides in place just after the entrance for the disk. make sure they are mounted properly, can move freely and they spring back also. There is a tiny spring at the bottom of the guide.
also with the blu ray unit our connect it back up - power and data cables - power on teh PS3 and try and insert the disk. That way you may be able to see what's blocking the disk and reset that particuler unit.

That's what I am looking for, a good guide in how to put it back together. What pictures?

unfortunately the pics I have are pretty basic and only show you how to get to the blu ray, it doesn't show anything inside the blue ray.
My only other suggestion is to try youtube.com and search for 'ps3 blu ray disassemble' - It pulls back a good few results that may help you.
Honestly, you should able to see what is blocking it whilst you have it powered on with the protective casing off the blu ray.

hello all i figured i'd jump on and share my story. i read all you people being so happy that you got a replacement from sony. dont get your hopes up too quick.
my ps3 did the same thing, less than a year after purchasing the 80g it froze while playing cod4, after waiting about 3 hours i restarted and it wouldnt read any type of discs. i sent it to sony and they sent me a new or refurb (not sure which), needless to say a few months later it stopped reading discs again this time my buddy onpsn said he took his apart and cleaned the lense and it worked fine. i did the same and it worked fine....for a while, then it started doing it again, i could jimmy with it and get it to work eventually
now it doesnt work at all and it wont even take the discs in or if i get them in it doesnt spit them out basically i have comp;ete;y ruined my drive, im pretty sure at this point my only option is to buy a new BR drive or a new ps3 (or XBOX)
just wanted to let everyone know that your new ps3 that sony sent out will eventually have the same problem that caused you to send the first one out, be sure to thank sony when this happens again

That sucks man! We pay big bucks for these machines to last for ages, its ok if your warranted but suck for those who dont, i had my PS2 last me for years with only minor faults by just cleaning the laser and your away again. And now technology has evolved with blue ray and they STUFF up BIGTIME! They produce amazing graphics for blue ray movies but the blue ray laser seems to fail alot more now and the makers should design new ones to last for years!

Wow that stinks...I wish you luck going forward. I wonder what the root causes of these failures are. I have three playstations and have not had any problems at all. Two 60gb units and one BC 80gb. Now one of them I bought Brand new and use mostly as a DVD/BD player. The other I bought on eBay that was repaired by Sony and the last I bought broken and replaced the laser myself. It's really strange but trust me when I say this...the Xbox 360 hardware is horrible. Nothing like their first unit which was solid.
I've told my kids that if the Xbox break one more time I'm burning it and using the PS3 exclusively. They say a little prayer every time they turn it on :).

I'l be opening the actual laser assembly soon to check if anything is obstructing the mirrors and prisms inside the firing areas. I would recommend that people do the same if they have already seen that the laser lights up but still fails to read the disk. As long as your careful I dont think its too hard to do.
Sony cheaped out on a focusing mirror which has to alternate its position (using a motor) to adjust for the two different laser beams travelling through one path. The new dual eye laser assemblies dont have this problem. I suspect that this piece is either stuck or shot although I hope that its just some dust or fogging on the inside of the housing which has ment that laser cannot focus properly.
Whatever it is Sony is not getting any more money from me seeing as I paid tons for it on launch. Saw some games I wanted today but they arnt getting a dime till this is fixed.
Failing all this I will buy just the laser but I dont know if all of the ones available on the net are region free (all the same for any early model PS3).

I just replaced a laser in my 60Gig. I had the bubble syndrome. I bought a new kes-400a w/deck and at fist the drive would spin but would not load anything and still had a bubble some times. How ever after many hours I grabed a Q-Tip and swabed the new laser and it works great for the time being. If your new replacement isnt working try swabing the laser

What do you know next morning the laser would not read blu ray material but guesse what I swabed the laser with another dry Q-tip and it worked agian. Is this caused by dust or something else? I have requested an RMA on the new laser just for the priciple that I wont swab the laser every day. Let you all know how things progress. FYI i purchased from yallstore.com on Ebay they ship out of NY I got my laser next day i am in OH. Fast shipping now i just need to make sure i get a reliable laser.

Yeah probably a bad laser. I bough my first two from yallstore...and yep both were bad. Then they tried to tell me the the KES-400a would not work in the 40gb units when I had the original already out of the box. Never used them again for lasers but they did give me my mmoney back. They dont test there lasers period. I found another person selling (eBay) out of Florida that is 100% with everything he sells.
Good luck I know first hand how much of a pain that can be.
