alright guys heres my problem.
I have a 40GB PS3, it will no longer play blueray dvds. So no games or movies. It will play normal dvds and cds however. When I put in COD it reads the game but will not start it. When I try to start the game I get the playstation 3 screen then it flickers and I get "An Error occured during start up. (80010017)" If I try Tony Hawk Proving grounds it reads the disc as a corrupted data disc, and when I put in a BR disc it doesnt ever reconize it. There isnt even a the loading bubble in the top right hand corner.
Ok so I did ALOT of internet reading and searching, and found that my error has something to do with the BR laser...so I thought. I bought a new laser and replaced it. I have a KES-410ACA laser. After I installed the new laser I got the same error. So then I though maybe the HDD had some bad files on it so I took it out of the PS3, hooked it up to the computer and formatted it so that it was blank. Then I did a full restore in the PS3 hoping that would work. Well that didnt work either. I need some more help.
Thank you for reading. Thank you if you can help.

Got yours free?! Lucky for some lol, but my frustration took me 2weeks to figure out why and tried MANY options to no avail so im like you hardout into my COD 5 with the new map packs and had to buy another new PS3 and made sure i got a whole new warranty, i do belive from previous answers with the whole batch that had BD problems. Good luck on your ventures on trying to fix yours

finally read all 24 pages of this thread, good work guys very interesting,
Now my problem is simaliar to what some of you have posted, my console is an american NTSC 80gb model which has the KEM-400AAA laser unit, now mine started freezing last week during loading sections of games, I have stripped it all down and checked operation of the blu ray drive everything seems fine, I have inserted a clear disc with the drive top removed and there is a very bright purple light then a good red light coming from laser, it playes DVD, data and CDs fine, also games on HDD are fine, loads blu rays but freeze 5 mins into it, also loads games fine but after 5 mins of game play you lose commentry etc but can still play till the next loading section then it freezes?
the fact the lasers seem to be operating fine do any of you have an idea of where my problem could lie? having opened the laser unit i was wondering if any of you know if there should be any resistance betwwen the moving magnifing lense and the motor? mine moves freely off the spring and doesn't turn motor? thanks in advance

oh, heres a guide that shows you how! http://progamer.cc/blog/ps3-laser-kem-40...e.html/
Interesting. I can't get my back together. It said somewhere to have a junk disc in and test it. No go for me. I read the entire thing and it's like it hits something. I take out the disc and it goes in, but then the two plastic tabs up front block a cd from going in. Reset, aligned, still no go.

I noticed the 2 tabs in front have a spring on it, and something to keep those tabs from going to far forward, maybe thats your problem. and when I replaced my lazer, I forgot to put back the little white plastic round and magnetic thing that keeps the disk in place. that obviously didn't help!
