Well living in a cool climate will help temps for sure. :) Hope your heater is a good one or you'll need to use your puter for a heat source. hehehe. :P

if the cpu is overclocked, it could be a stability issue. and I quote "The reason i ask is because i had my CPU on load and it shut down". not enough vcore is a definate possibility.

40c under load is not uncommon for cpu temp. my Q9650 at 3.4ghz only runs about 38c under load. now the core temps are a different story. they run about 60c with software using a TJ-Max of 105c and about 50c with software using a TJ-Max of 95c. all good as it is still 45c to TJ-Max regardless of which software I use.

The 1600rpm one. I only have one at the side(just fits in due to the cooler) and on the cpu cooler itself so you could go one better and stick another at the front aswell.

Not sure what to do with the RED Led one at the back. I'll just leave it i think.
Thanks for that. I gotta get me some of those.

Greg16,
Question! Do you know what Q6600 you have? B3 stepping or G0 stepping. If you don't know, give us the numbers off the CPU box, or if it's an OEM, the Invoice! Is it overclocked? If you have CPUZ, what does the CPU voltage read on it? I'm guessing that the CPU needs a little higher voltage, especially if as I suspect, it doesn't re-set the bios. It's more like hitting the reset button!

Best Regards,
Russ

Everyone asks me that. This is a temporary build anyway. To hold me off till Nehalem. So I wont be keeping it long, but I will follow it up with another one.

A GPU will only introduce visual corruption in my experience if the memory overheats. if the core overheats the system will give you a blank screen and either reboot, or sit there with the monitor on standby. The GPU is the most likely candidate based on my experience with the exact same graphics card.

Nehalem 2.66Ghz CPU is going to be the same price as your Q9450. They have already released official pricing info. Probably gonna be expensive if you dont pre-order and then demand will jack up the prices or it wont be in stock or something.

Yes but can you pre-order a reasonably priced motherboard for it?

IDK, we shall see when it comes out. I don't expect it to be more expensive than when X38 mobos fist came out, etc. At least officially. The prices might be jacked up by retailers due to demand.

At the price that some of these guys paid for all those high end Nvidia chipset based Asus boards it probably won't seem that expensive. Intel will also release a second chipset aimed at middle priced boards. We now have X48 with a budget chipset P45 so perhaps there will be an X58 and P55.

Since Nehalem is due to be released sometime in September by Christmas there should be reasonable support for it so I'm think January or February as a good time to start looking at a build. I want to read a little feedback on them before I invest, because when Nehalem hits the market all of the current processors are going to drop.

Something else I worked out...
If you game on average 6 hours a week, but leave your PC on 24/7 when at idle, an HD4850 wastes sufficient power at idle to cost an extra £60 in just one year compared to the HD3870, despite having an almost identical load power rating. Ouch.
