I'd personally say go for 939, and the 4400+ (if you go to X2). OR 939 and Opteron if you wish to overclock and stay single core (can go X2, but costs a lot).

Skt 754 is not as powerful as the 939s and is far less future useable. Soon AMD are releasing their new Skts and so also 939 will become cheaper and less useable, and 754 will be rejected almost completely like Skt-A.

What I have;
AMD Althon 3000+ 2.0ghz Socket 754 - Clocked to 2.40ghz - Stable
Akasa LED cooler - AK-855-BL
Winfast NFS250 motherboard
Winfast GeForce 6200TD - Unlocked to 8 pipelines and increased mhz, better preformance than 6600vanilla
1256MB Kingston DDR RAM
500W Magna PSU - ATX500W
DVD Reader
DVD±RW
1 Blue and Red LED case fan
1 Blue, Green and Red LED case fan

What I am getting;

What I want... £2500 worth of pc wont list the parts, it'll take up a lot of space.
Only 2500? What about the Overclockers Quad SLi then? That's £4300!

Ideally, you're after going Socket 939 with an X2 processor, maybe 3800, maybe 4200, depends on your budget. I'd avoid single core with 939, you might as well stick with 754 if that's all you can manage.

That is more than likely what I'll end up doing(S939). Speaking of socket A I just finished putting together a system for the Mrs. I had an old Abit KV-7 board and XP3000+ Barton lying around.Stuck a single Corsair xms 512 ddr 400 in it. It runs circles around her old H-P Celeron 733! But I just can't seem to get it to run one of her favorite games...Keeps re-booting. The wierd thing is the game played fine on the old HP. Go figure!

Well my brother build a rather tastey rig for about £1500. I plan on getting this...

The yellow ones are the parts I;m unsure as to whichI would want to get. Unfourtunatly though I have no money at the moment and will be going to Uni at the end of the year, so won't be able to build this rig, but will get an Asus A7Jc laptop (most likely) aswell as an external HDD to go with it (seems a fairly powerful laptop for the price aswell as being a 17" widescreen display which is what I'm after).

What I have;
AMD Althon 3000+ 2.0ghz Socket 754 - Clocked to 2.40ghz - Stable
Akasa LED cooler - AK-855-BL
Winfast NFS250 motherboard

Sounds like you and I have something in common.
That system would be good with the Opteron 170, but avoid anything with the silenx fan, especially if you're after a quiet PC, it's false advertising, they're about 30dB, you can get far quieter. Fortunately my mate who bought one got his money back for it. Believe it or not on a forum, a silenx techie mentioned something about something or other, and two other users came along saying "I've got a silenx such and such and it's brilliant!" etc. and they were from the same IP address as the silenx tech support rep.
A corrupt company, and I don't like corrupt companies.
Anyway the upshot of that is that your Water cooling system will not only be a waste of time and money (like all water cooling setups) but will also not be quiet.

Well Guys I've been doing some window shopping and it appears at least for now that these two items should get me started on the right path.
cpu-http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103562

M/b-http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131541

I do realize there is no pci-e slot on the board but this will allow me to save a few bucks by using my existing card for now and the board can always be replaced when my budget allows.

Total cost with shipping $372.00 If anyone knows of a better deal in the U.S. please let me know.

Oh and yes...opinions and comments are welcome!

Hi sammorris,Yes I spotted that board last night also but it has a couple draw backs.That board is matx form factor,has only two ram slots and the fsb is limited to only 1600 mhz. I also had my eyes on the A/64 x2 4200+ it's only $100 more but out of my reach financialy at the moment.

I have my eyes set on exactly the same processor, and the same situation applies to me at present. However I'm hoping to make a full system out of it - £1200 worth. Wish me luck!

Heh, that would see me with the overclockers FX-60 crossfire solution and a 42" Plasma screen. But we live in the real world, and besides we've already had our fair share of winning for the past decade, we won a £600 TV, so that can't be argued with!

You have better luck than me,I have never won anything of significant value...perhaps my time is due!
Either way and if all goes well, I should be able to purchase my new board and cpu within the next couple weeks.Maybe there will be a price decrease by then.

Celerons are cheap because they are basic, they run very slowly compared to the mhz speed they run at. P4s have more advanced technology and run faster for the same amount of mhz. However, AMD processors such as Athlon64s run faster still. Celerons are often stripped down versions of pentiums, and consequently a 3000mhz celeron is roughly equivalent to a 2600mhz P4, though this obviously varies depending on the task at hand.

Lol love the massive nVidia logo in your sig and yet you run an X850XT - nice choice.

I didn't know they made 42" LCDs, that would be preferable. 1920x1080 or 2560x1600?

I'm trying to OC my new AMD Athlon XP2800+ and it's a nightmare. I had a Sempron 3000+ that OC'd beautifuly but everything I read said the 2800 was a better OC'r.I tried to read the old thread here concerning this but it didn't get me anywhere. What I'm wondering if there is someone here that is using the same cpu and mobo combo and has OC'd successfully. One thing to note and I dont know if it's important, the memory that is installed is a matched pair of Corsair XMS 512's, and one stick of XMS 512 that is not.(PC3200) And no, I'm not going 64 just yet, no need. I'm posting pics of my BIOS settings for OC'ing. Chinese to me.

1536MB isn't a good combination of RAM to overclock with, you really want single or dual channel. It shouldn't stop you though.

Hi guys,

I've got a quick question about a setting for my memory. I currently have the dram refresh rate set at 15.6 uSec but I read an article that said for memory modules 1 gb and larger the setting would be better at 7.8 uSec. BTW I have the dram idle timer set at infinite. My specs are in my sig. Any input? Thanks
