Must say even though most of the things you guys talk about are still over my head, but the PC that Russ helped with my first build with the Gigabyte board, of course I built it for my kids, it's downstairs, it still runs fast as hell, runs night and day and still to my astonishment how it runs so cool, everytime I go downstairs to clean everything out cause the kids are to lazy how cool it runs, I touch all sides and never feel any heat what so ever and how quiet, and yes the fans are running, if it wasn't for the blue light on you would not know it was even running.
Thank the bearded guy upstairs and Russ's help on the choices that I never ran into the kind of problems I hear, I would be so frustrated and lost, I couldn't be happier with this build, My only complaint is sometimes when I do go downstairs it remeinds me on how slow my HP is when one time I really thought it was fast.
The moral of the story, never buy one, build your own.

Haha that differs from person to person. I have a few friends that would be better off just buying one.
Especially one idiot that just bought a Cooler Master HAF 932 then put an ancient almost OOP AM2 board in it with a stock 6000+ and a GTX260. Says he spent $2000 on that PC and I call bullcrap. I don't think he knows how well versed I am with PCs because he tried to BS me about half the build. Uh, buddy, I've built a $2000 PC. Yours is not.
And then another friend who doesn't give a crap about wire management. Big bees nest of wires all over the case. And then he's wondering why his OC'd 940BE is burning up the multiple 780G boards he's bought...

You've got no idea. My friends are relatively tech-literate, or if not, they're not thick. They ask before they do. people I've met on aD though, a lot of them defy belief.

My friends are all tech retarded. They just waste money till they find the combo of parts that won't catch fire. Literally... Then there's the few who actually listen to my advice and they're like OMG my computer is sweet now.
Seriously the idiot with the 940, my 7750BE build is noticeably faster than it, doesn't crash period(he says it's because of Windows), and runs infinitely cooler. It's sad to see such a sweet CPU in the hands of somebody who doesn't even know how to properly take care it. I mean he doesn't even do proper daily maintenance. I ran CCleaner on it after emptying his recycle bin and it deleted 35GB worth of stuff........ Then I defragged it and he was like did you overclock my processor?
I know a few people who didn't take my advice and will soon be having a bonfire in their rooms. And I couldn't care less. In fact, I want to see it burn. Call me cynical or whatever but I have other friends who are total n00bs with hardware and take way better care of their PC. Because they listen to my advice.

Agreed. It saddens me to see expensive hardware go to waste because people are idiots. Or expensive hardware rendered useless by poor choice of other hardware.

haha, they know stuff, but they are laptop men lol. one a mac guy, though i ahve to say after using mac osx, its really really good, i wanna dual boot it.

That's a case of not wanting to be bothered with the time it takes to research things first! That and a lot of Mommy and Daddy footing the bill too, at least around here. The kids around here are all "Experts" too! They know everything about nothing! ROFLMSOAO!! I've see a number of people putting a $200-$300 video card in what I would jokingly call a $12 computer (or at least one with a 250w PSU) and wonder why it doesn't work! LOL!! I'm not saying that you can't make a good computer out of an eMachine, because some of them do have decent motherboards in them. All you have to do is throw away the PSU, CPU and junk memory that comes with them. I was lucky with Oxi, because it had a decent Foxconn motherboard that would support a CPU better than the Sempron it came with. All it took was a 64x2 4800+, Freezer 64, decent 500w PSU, 2GB of decent ram and a 50mm fan to cool the NB chip. That's all it took to make a decent machine out of it! LOL!!

i bought an X1800GTO when i first got in this, and got told to increace my PSU, so i did, and hitting 3d would leave a blank screen and reboot. the 500w PSU was £20.
so knowing you need a PSU is not always enough, but lol though, i needed a PSU for my bro when his tagan 330W went out after a bang (nothign got taken out though, but it was second hand, so brilliant on tagan PSU, not so for an RMA) and we used that PSU to run an OCed E2140 (3.2GHz) and a 9800GT. shows how much power a P4 at 3.06GHz and a x1800GTO used then!
then i gave my bro sams 850W be quiet PSU, talk about overkill!

Heh, the 850W BeQuiet that shut down at 690W load.... :S
My mate Nick's file server has a 330W Tagan in it, probably the same PSU. Relatively quiet, and still running at 2 1/2 years of age.

my 650 was a quiet one playing crysis, (i stopped the fans and held the gpu fan for about 3s, couldnt hear it

I gather your leaning toward the lower latency ;) From the looks of things ive seen across the web, Gskill is coming up in the world. Ive always trusted Kingston, but a faulty flash drive has made me reevaluate the situation. I would still buy their ram, but honestly, Im thinking the Gskill is For The Win! :D Besides, its cheap, free shipping, etc LOL!

Personally I would lean toward the 1066 memory myself. The difference in speed, even with the higher latency is often better than you can get with 800 memory. To me, if the MB supports 1066 memory, it becomes a no brainer. I would rather have a guarantee that it would run at 1066 than to try and overclock 800 memory to 1066, because if it doesn't, you have no recourse at all! The 1066 memory is already overclocked 266MHz, and if it won't run at that speed, RMA it! I was happy with both the 800 and 1066 G.Skills.
Some people have said that they don't see any real difference going from the 800 to the 1066, but I lived with the 800MHz for over a year, and the difference is noticeable, at least to me. Fatter memory bandwidth too! I have a pair of the G.Skills in Oxi, even though the MB only supports 800MHz memory. I plan to put a 780G motherboard in it eventually anyway, and the memory for it, is ready when I am! The MB won't see it as 1066 memory with the 4800+, but it will allow me to clock it higher than 800MHz without any worries!
My personal preference is still the 1066 Dominator EPP memory. Enabling EPP gives you a better a better memory bandwith, and controls the voltage. You don't have to touch a thing with the memory, and it adjusts itself on the fly!

Now you know my secret ie why years ago i switched career from Mainframes to Unix in order to further my employability, instead of a job in the Microsoft world.
I get better satisfaction out of command line work than being adept at using a mouse (and no, DOS command line doesn't qualify as real command line LOL!). Everyone and his next door neighbour, brother and cousin third time removed is a 'PC Expert'. Maybe i'm just getting older and jaded but that's been my opinion and view for many years now :)

I suppose that is logical. And im one of those people Russ LOL! I dont notice a difference between 800 and 1066. But who knows. Perhaps something isn't configured properly. Yes, im running 4 sticks now underclocked(auto), but ive ran just two of them at 1066. I really didn't feel any difference. Though im sure the Cpu does :D I hope this doesn't sound like an argument. Last thing I want.

as far as the differenece in 800 and 1066, yes in my case i cant tell the difference. these ddr2 800 Mushkins have been running 1066 for the last 5 months without a hickup. the reason behind me wanting new mem is just for the fact of getting 4gb's im thinking seriously about switching over to a 64bit OS to use all 4 gigs. the kingston and gskill have been highly recomended from alot of people i trust when it comes to computer building. docTY swears by the kingston hyper series...lol i also have had alot of people say great things about the dominators. i have had a set of them that i wound up takeing back to microcenter. i just wasnt impressed with all the trouble i had to get them to run @1066. but that was on the GA-P35DS3R BOARD that i no longer have..lol

As far as I see it, 1066mhz CAS5 and 800mhz CAS4 is the same speed memory itself, and 1066mhz CAS5 is more guaranteed than overclocking the 800C4 to 1066C5, and makes overclocking easier with high FSBs for that reason. Not to mention, higher speed usually equals better bandwidth which makes some programs (in particular, programs that run well on AMDs and i7s) run noticeably better.
creaky: As far as I'm concerned, compared to some of the people I see around here (and know, I don't mean any of the regulars... haha) I'm comparatively an expert, but well, in the grand scheme of things I know bugger all, especally compared to people like yourself.

I'm sure you and everyone else here knows i'm certainly not aiming my comments at anyone here, it's just my view on things. Everyone's expert at something, but not at everything. For instance i'm certainly no expert at everything, even at Unix i don't know everything, it's a huge subject, there's 'sections' of stuff i just haven't seen yet. I just feel that in the world of home PC's, as it's such an easy 'subject', and it's accessible to the masses, everyone appears to be an expert. That's one of the reasons i deliberately didn't chase the PC/Windows side of things for a career. The downside is that people like me are far fewer, and a company needs only one or a few of us, it's too specialised, plus add the recession to the mix, imagine how it makes finding a new job far harder :).
I'm sure that makes more sense now :)
Back to the 1066 RAM, i use it but can't comment on the overclocking of RAM.

Well as far as I'm concerned buy whatever works for you. Russ and I ran Sandra and compared. He has 1066, I have 800. He had slightly more memory bandwidth, maybe 10%. But overall the two systems perform identically, even with me using a 780G board. I think you wouldn't even notice the difference between speeds so buy what suits your needs. I just so happen to like 800, so I use it.

For AMD users perhaps that's the case. For Intel users, PC6400 has no guarantees of overclocking beyond 3.4Ghz for my chip, 3.6Ghz for the E8400.

I had the exact same problem with the second UD4H. Since I replaced the CPU it runs super! Like I said, I won't be making that mistake again!
