the max res for a 17inch display is 1440x900.

His is only 1024 x 768. I've looked. Pretty sure drivers are relatively up to date too...

1280x1024 on a 17" I expect. 1024x768 only on that size is very rare.
The 24" Dells are very nice though, despite not being S-IPS, there's really very little to distinguish them from the 30" monitors, apart from perhaps the colour gamut of the newer panel (which newer 24" models like the U2411 probably have).
You're definitely right about graphical demands. 2560x1600 is 78% more pixels than 1920x1200. What an HD4870 can do on a 24" it takes a 4870X2 or HD5870 to do on a 30". What an HD5850 can do on a 24" it takes an HD5970 to do on a 30", what a GTX260 can do on a 24" it takes a GTX295 to do on a 30". It's a tough resolution to run. But when you see it in action, you can't believe what you've been missing (I shouldn't be encouraging people! haha)

You're right, you shouldn't tempt me LOL! One day, that resolution may be widely used. And then you'll probably be running twice that resolution ;) I saw a monitor on Dell's site going for 16,000+. Pretty insane!

Not seen any script errors.
Diagnostic displays like that have been around for ages, though that's about as reasonable as I've yet seen them, they're usually $30k plus. Didn't realise Dell made any. Problem is they're often 30Hz or 15Hz refresh rate as they're designed for static images.

Only widescreen. And only for desktops. Laptop 17" monitors are typically 1920x1080 or 1920x1200. Standard aspect 17" monitors go to 1280x1024. Occasionally 1400x1050 but it's rare at 17".

Just wait for HD6870 stock levels to stabilise and prices to come back down. The HD6870 came out at £175 here if you got one in the first batch, and the HD6870 is generally faster than the GTX470, not to mention only 150W instead of the GTX470's 225.

That's one of the reasons I'll be getting 2 24" monitors for my next monitor upgrade instead of a 30". Although it is quite likely the resolution will be higher than 1920x1080 by the time I can justify spending that kind of money on a monitor.....

1920x1080 monitors are cheap, it's the 1920x1200 ones that are expensive.

My Samsung was 300$ when I bought it. I think it was worth it. And since the Dell is no doubt significantly better, it will DEFINITELY be worth it ;)

Your idea of cheap is definitely different from mine lol. I'll admit that they don't break the bank, but when you need to buy two it adds up past what I can afford to spend right now.

I've only seen one HDTV that would have worked for photo editing. But I haven't actually done that much 'in store' viewing :S Black friday, I may be going to Best Buy. If I'm unimpressed with their deals, I'll do my shopping online like I generally do.
It's truly a shame that the HDTV manufacturers aren't more descriptive for us tech savvy people. I want to know what type of panel they're selling! E.g. S-IPS ;)

HDTVs are awful for colour reproduction and just image quality in general really. Massively high contrast so good for films but not much else. The abysmal pixel density doesn't help either. PC monitors are definitely the way to go, and there's a reason why diagnostic monitors are typically fairly small.

Most brands are much the same unless they get something wrong really. The Toshiba/Samsung/LG TVs are mostly all as good as each other. I certainly have no complaints about our Regza XV.

Toshiba is generally all around a good company I've heard. Seems like I heard something about them being the first to make a super large Tv or something to that effect :S 100+ inches If i'm not mistaken.

Hmm, not sure who had that accolade. Despite the fact that almost all of the Toshiba TVs I've had have been because they've happened to be the best value, I've been pretty satisfied with almost all of them. The only thing they don't seem to be able to make very well is a power switch.
However the UK-based production plant was closed this year in favour of Eastern Europe, so it's possible that production quality will drop. That said, Dell Ultrasharp monitors are made in eastern europe and they're still pretty good.
