It's safe. It will shut itself down and give you an error message if it is unstable.

How long does it take to test with prime 95? I ran the test really early in the morning and when i got back from work, it was still going. Anyway, what do some of you all think about HD cooling fans? Are they really that needed? I feel like i have enough fans in my case but i dunno. Give me some feedback guys.

Did you run a torture test on Prime? Because if you run a torture test for about 12 hours or so, then that clock speed should be stable. How did you get 2.388GHz stable... I can only get mine up to 2.255GHz, hmmm, maybe it's my video card, lol. That seems to be my scapegoat for everything.

Just a suggestion, you might want to start a new thread about the HDD fans. I don't think the admins like the thread going off the topic. There might alredy be reviews in another thread about HDD fans also. (I have two case fans that blow directly over each of my HDDs. Keeps them real cool.)

but i prefer cpu-z and mbm5.

get a board with the nforce2 chipset you can push it
the asus a7n8x is pretty popular among overclockers and the abit nf7 and the nf7-s

and about your q just increase numbers in small amount until you get the high and stable frequency.

The Thoroughbred is not locked... Your multiplier is set at 13.5x. The locked setting on the Bartons is 12.5x. So instead of overclocking the entire system, only your processor is being overclocked.

overclocking is safe if you know what youre doing and if you have the capable hardware like good cooling sys like case fans,good cpu cooler (volcano 12,11,thermalright).

just read about your mobo and cpu in the forums

Yeah, he's right. As long as you have the proper cooling, you'll be fine. GET THE VOLCANO 12!! It's awesome.

with my 2200 i could get 1.8MHz. all i can get with the 2800 is 1.77MHz
Interesting because the

XP2200
Core = Thoroughbred A
FSB = 133Mhz
Multiplier = 13.5
Final = 1800Mhz
So getting 1.8Ghz is expected.

XP2800
Core = Barton
FSB = 166Mhz
Multiplier = 12.5
Final = 2075Mhz
Since you're only getting 1.77Ghz, check that the mobo isnt running the CPU is "safe boot" mode :)
Quote:
i could not get the computer to use any mult. when i used 166MHz. which voltage should i use with this setting? maybe i have it wrong
Reset everything to defaults/automatic to see what voltages are expected ... and overclock from there ... for 166Mhz -- which is what it should be, you should be using the "default" voltage (1.65V)
Quote:
i forgot, i am just trying to get abetter frq. than my 2200 could give me. 2.08 is all i can get out of my 2800, but it shuts down when it gets to windows
1. Check temps/cooling
2. Try upping the voltages by 0.025 :)
Quote:
I believe the Barton core multipliers may be locked anyway.
Not the 2500 and 2600. All the later ones are however.
Quote:
I forgot to ask what speed of memory are you using.
If you increased the fsb speed to accomodate the new processor then you may be overclocking your memory by too much which could also cause it to fail.
With NF2 boards running asynch isnt a problem. With VIA boards you can usually get away with it without a problem -- but not always.
Quote:
is there any one can help me to overclock the CPU to 3000MHz?
No. 3Ghz is way outside of the range of a 15 stage chip :) (well not really but effectively so)
Quote:
so, is there any relationship i can calculate between the number of AMD and the MHz?
No. And get used to it -- because Intel doesnt use Mhz anymore either :)
Quote:
coz now i have run my CPU in 2300MHz, is it dangerous?
Only if its overly hot
Quote:
mine is Asus, so it has the funtion of auto-reboot with the last safe fps and the fps of my pc is 190
Whats this FPS thing?
Quote:
Is there any way that someone can help me with the settings to get it in the 2.2+ range?
FSB = 200Mhz
Multiplier = 11.0 :)
Enjoy
Quote:
When i got it to read as an AMD athlon XP 3000+ i just increased the multiplier but i left the vcore settings the same. Should i do something with that to increase it?
Not unless you need to.
Quote:
How did you increase the multiplyer? The Bartons should be locked, unless it's an older one
If you have a locked multiplier one you'll have to increase the FSB as you (obviously) wont be able to touch the multiplier :)
Quote:
my cvolt is 1.65v i have to increase to 1.8?
Thats a pretty big jump all at once ... might want to take smaller jumps
Quote:
IS YOUR PC OC WHAT NUMBERS ARE YOU USING?
AND WHAT COOLER YOU HAVE?
Lets avoid the allcapsing
Quote:
Do you all think that 2.388 GHz is too hard on an Athlon XP 2800+ (Barton)
No. XP2500s can be OC'd to 2.44GHz.
Quote:
The Thermaltake Volcano 12 heatsink is more like a turbine
Isnt that great? :)
Quote:
It's safe. It will shut itself down and give you an error message if it is unstable.
Thats from the program's perspective. For the system to protect itself, the mobo needs to (properly) support overheat shutdown :)
Quote:
what do some of you all think about HD cooling fans? Are they really that needed?
Well without fans HDDs can touch 55° ... with even basic cooling they'll stay at 30ºC :)
Quote:
hhd fans they suck!!! having a fan in the case that blow air to de hhd is better i hava a omega dual fan in my maxtor 80gb 7200 rpm and doesnt do much really
Wow. Firstly, i'll pretend i can read that. Secondly you'll note that a hdd fan IS a fan "in the case that blows air to 'de' hhd". You'll also note that fancier setups like the Vantec Vortex do a very nice job of keeping the HDD cool.

Ive been trying to get mine to overclock past 2.2 or thereabouts with the FSB past 175 MHz (Vcore 1.75). As far as I can tell this 0.13 process with the barton core has its limits around here. Problem is Im thinking that cos I have a power hungry graphics card, with my 400W power supply (190W combined, check yours out) the sys is overstressed for stability.

Another issue is with DDR400 compatibility; has anyone noticed that with A7N8X the new bois sets better mem compatibility timings for overclocking?

The FSB is no problem, should easily overclock, we need to unlock the multiplier to get better performance.

Any ideas?

OK, TRY NOT TO TOUCH YOUR VCORE LEAVE IT IN DEFAULT SETTINGS, THE FSB INCREASE ALONE IS MORE STABLE.

ABOUT THE POWER SUPPLY YOU NEED A HIGH QUALITY POWER UNIT THATS REALLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE YOU NEED STABLE VOLTAGES, ONE OTHER THING YOUR MEMS WHAT BRAND YOU ARE USING??. and cooling??
