I made an update to the tutorial on the coloured progress bars! So if you want to know what all those colours are about, then read 6.2!

I'm with you evil_one, I've tried and tried and tried with this emule but i get the same thing, starts to download a little then goes back to waiting and never does anything else.

I have 600kb modem and am sharing 5GB, sorry Dela but this really sux, cant shake low id despite following all your advice and after three days and only getting a tiny fraction of a file I think i'll also take my chances with diet kazaa+kazaa lite

I have a 512kb modem connection. There were a few teething problems for the first several hours of using emule. I also got memory error messages twice during this time. I had to shut down emule and restart. While it was hashing the shared files I also noticed how emule was freezing for several seconds all the time, it was also hogging up all of the cpu power. After 8 hours the problems all seem to have disappeared, the cpu power used by emule seems to have cut down drastically thus enabling to do other work in the background. Upon starting emule the hashing of files is configured straight away, this was not the case during the first several hours whereby this process took 2.5 hours, twice, for the times I had to close the emule application and restart. I've been a Kazaa user for a 1.5 years, and recently converted to Kazaalite++, the version which permanantly keeps your participation level at
K-Lite Master, which is the same as Supreme Being. Since the introduction of Participation levels, this has led to users changing files names in a bid to increase their own levels. I agree that Kazaa is the fastest in terms of downloads, but although emule is slower for me, the files on this network are pretty amazing. I've found loads of stuff that has never appeared on Kazaa. I think emule also has to tweaked in the right way for your particular pc, you may have to play around a little to get the best out of it. Be patient with emule is probably the most important thing before you can reap the rewards, then you'll never look back!
Dela, I read your emule tutorial and have read the guides on the emule site. The one thing I need to be clarified on would be the setting on the Preferences>>Connection. The box where you see: Max. Sources Per File [Hard Limit] and the one next to it: Connection Limits [Max Connections] I currently have mine on 400 and 500 respectively. Could you give me an idea for the numbers I need to use for my particular connection speed? Would this make any difference in terms of the speeds in the downloads? On the Extended Settings tabbed page I have 20 as Max.new connections/5secs. I read somewhere that you can increase this slightly if you have a fast LAN connection, if so what do you recommend? I also have File Buffer Size (240000) and Queue Size (5000). Could I tweak any of these to obtain a faster download. Everything on the Extended Settings page were placed by default, so I have not changed any of these values.

I have been using eMule for a few months now!! I get about 80kb/s usually off it now because I was never bad with uploading. I left my bandwidth open to everyone and since eMule rewards uploaders, I get great speed downloading.

evil_one, most of the files on eMule are from places like sharereactor so if you have kazaa files barely anyone is gonna start downloading them because there is almost always a better version on eMule. I'd rather go for quality over speed! (and im getting good speed now!!)

enzyme, its great to see someone appreciates the content on eMule because in comparison with kazaa, kazaa only has speed but what good is the speed when the files are usually fake or bad quality?? Your connection settings would improve speed yes but it could kill your connection if you put it too high! I wouldn't recommend tweaking anything else, my advice is get the most famous files and keep uploading them cause eMule remebers client it has recieved files from before and gives them higher priority!!

ive decided totake your advice dela and have a go at emule after getting sick of slow kazaa. But when go into the directories setup and try to select my files for sharing there is no tick box to select like it show in the demos.

Followed all your advice so far and am looking forward to some decet dl at last. Was getting nothing from kazaa even tho i built up to supreme being the hard way through sharing. DC was good for a while but kazaa seemed easier at the time. Will prob go back to dc and see how its doing.

Any help - much appreciated

Just a quick point...

I've been using Kazaa for many months now, and I must say being a bit of a tech I HATE the "fisher-Price" spoon-fed gui!

****When I first started using Emule, I too was getting a low ID.****

Im using a linksys 4-port router, and after following the instructions the emule help system about using the Mule over a router (basically setting port forwarding and a static IP) every thing works fine!

Also, there's a good little equation to working out the connection settings based on your up / down bandwidth.

Anyone having these probs, I'd suggest taking a look at the help file... :)

ok, I've read the debate and I've also read the FAQ and I've rebuilt the computer with a new mobo and cpu so I've decided to have another go at emule. Play the wait and see game and see how it improves, the FAQ does state that emule operates on a reward system and the longer you use the faster it will become.

I still have question tho, I typed in a url for emule to update the server.met file from but when i reloaded emule after shutting it down the url had disappeared!!! How do you get emule to remember url after shutdown??

OVERNET is the fileshrer I use AND it take EDonkey/ShareReactor links. An excellent alternative to emule/edonkey. Be warned of the initial file size though 0.9 gig !! and be sure to have (A)DSL. The speed is not the fastest around 20 to 50bps so maybe use it overnight for those mega dloads of appz and movies.

PS the kids who want INSTANT mega dloads should stop whining about speed and start CONTRIBUTING to the file sharing communities!!

jordanc, I dont think emule can remember the url to update server.met but it would be a handy little feature :)

monzaman, I like overnet but in comparison to emule, i prefer emule. I don't moan about speed because in emule when you've used it long and uploaded a lot you are rewarded with priority and that makes downloads a lot quicker. In my opionion, DC++ (and DC), eMule, eDonkey2000(HyBrid aswell), Overnet are the only real p2p and they have the best stuff!!

I do contribute to the file sharing community but I'm also a newbie who is learning more day by day. Sure as a newbie you do wanna start getting things quickly and anything that can help you'll use however I'm also a newbie who has intellect enough to know that if you want to receive then you must also give.

As well as files that are currently in my shared folder, any genuine files I receive I make available for sharing - even renaming falsely named files and getting rid of any tat and cr@p so you will only ever get genuine files from me.

I cant say emule has sped up yet but then I am still in early days, Thanx dela for all your help and all others who have helped, I'll let you know how it speeds up over the next couple of days.

PEACE

:-)

RYANMCSH - in the emule FAQ Beginners guide at the emule project website there is a section on ports routers and firewalls.....very very useful.

go to www.emule-project.com
Click FAQ
Click English on left (in red ink)
click ports routers and firewalls
then Click Routers
Then just choose your most appropriate option.

Hope that helps...

Hey dela et al, see I have been learning from you all and I'm even giving some of that knowledge back!!!!

Just for you I recommend KAZAA (the full edition) and maybe a touch of LIMEWIRE or if you really really can't wait (kids are SO impatient) go and BUY the software and movies!

I understand it hogging up my modem but does it have to drain all my power... well a hell of alot of it anyway???

jordanc, if you are sharing a lot of files thism is perfectly normal!! Basiucally eMule has to hash every file that you share, dont worry about the hoggin up of your cpu, it'll stop eventually once all the files are hashed up. As for hogging on your modem, what do you expect a p2p app to do??? :P lol
