Yes, that's because Swap Magic 3.8 is a compressed disk and cannot be copied. I have run the SM 3.8 elf file off a usb hdd, but one still needs to do a TOC refresh(meaning put in an original PS2 disk that is as big or bigger than the backup you wish to play), then swap for the backup.
That is why I say you would still have to swap discs.

lol, I understood you.
I am saying you can't just copy or store Swap Magic on the Hard drive like other your games.
And even by using the elf file of Swap Magic on your hdd, you would still need to swap a disk when starting it from your hd.
When you do get yours, go ahead and try it if you like, then you will understand how it all works.

lol, what really makes me laugh is when you said when i get my hd, because it was only few weeks ago when my ps2slim got broken (it took a fall on concrete) hence i will be shopping for a new ps2 soon when prices go down, im going to get the ps2 free as my dad gave me £100 worth of high street vouchers.
however i got no money currently for the memor 32 or the hd, plus in addition to this, im planning to get a ps2 flat monitor which alone currently could cost £90
all together the subtotal is £280 (i can get a brand new ps3 for that much)

Seems like a waste to use memor32 only on a slim PS2 with a USB HDD. Why not get a used phat PS2 along with a IDE HDD to use Memor32? Not only will the game compatibility be much better if you use a IDE HDD, you can basically use memor32's functionality like a mod-chip and use its built-in dev1 and dev2 modes just like any quality mod-chip like the DMS4, MIGD and CC. You practically don't even need a trigger disk or Swap Magic for that matter. That's why I wanted memor32 too but I'll wait a little bit longer for a MC exploit that can use the memento firmware in any standard PS2 MC.

but i got a important question, knowing the fact that i want a usb based external HD for the slim ps2, what type of hd does it have to be and it be an ordanary usb hd or an usn enclosure?

So sorry to hear about your SLIM PS2, I guess it didn't like the concrete.
I have to agree with Z3120, having a FAT PS2 with an IDE hdd is so much better. I am glad now I have mine.
But I like my slim also and just use my USB drive with it.
Anyway here is an example of a USB hdd like mine. As you will see in the description it says its HIGH-SPEED USB 2.0 & 1.1 Compatible.
According to this thread way back one can use an external USB case also. I have no idea really.

Yeah you could almost get a premodified PS2 and then you can play everything for the amount spent.

now im really concerned, the hd example you gave me is likely to bigger than the ps2 slim, i think the link one was an usb enclosure hd
the one thing i like about my chosen one is its 10-20% of the ps2 and its slim, how ever it does state its 1.1 backward comfortable.
so i came to the conclution if people can run games of their USB STICKS why wouldnt my small chosen usb hd
what do you think?

As long as its 1.1 compatible then it should be fine.

My usb hdd is powered with an ac adaptor and the usb cable hooked up to PS2.
USB sticks or flash drives are different and only require plugging into the ps2 usb port. They are much smaller though and you wouldnt fit only a few games on them. I think the biggest pen drive is now 8GB.

Yes you can boot hdloader by CD or DVD. Also you can learn how to use uLaunch 4.12 to copy elf files to your memory card and boot the hdloader from there with your Swap Magic.
And yes you can install games on the hdd.

You can also boot .ELF files from a USB drive to boot HDL with Swap Magic. It's the method I prefer more because of less steps and less possible disc scratching.

Yes, you can install games through HDL on your HDD, but it's incredibly more wise and heavily suggested you use something like WinHiip 1.7.6. to transfer your games rips onto your HDD instead of using HDL and your PS2. That's how you'll ultra burn your PS2 to its early coffin.

Just follow the tutorial to transfer games to a PS2 hdd.
All Z3120 is meaning is that you can run hdloader.elf or other elf files right from a usb pen drive.

I believe mine moves slightly too, but the connection to the hdd is firm. I have only ever had the one so think that is fine. It works great.
