Hey Ryu, you've been more than helpful in helping me encode to AVCHD onto regular dvd media. I have a question though that I cannot seem to clear up by reading the forums and all the information you've given. I am not quite clear on what the difference between BD-5, BD-9s, and AVCHD is.
I simply thought BD-9 for example was just a bluray encoded to fit onto a dual layer dvd in the AVCHD format. The reason I am bringing this up is because I read all kinds of reports about players playing AVCHD, but not BD-9 and so on.
I wanted to know what encoding profiles of yours makes the best compatible AVCHD for standalone blu-ray players. I ask this because I do not think my bluray player will last forever and wanted to encode mine so that they would have a good chance to work in any future blu-ray player I get. Thanks for any information you can provide.

There are a few things that differentiate between BD-5, BD-9 & AVCHD. However the most notable being the initial buffer and peak bitrate. Blu-ray has a higher tolerance here. BD-5/BD-9 pushes the AVCHD format beyond it's standard specification. The buffer and bitrate are more aligned with the Blu-ray spec.
Some players can play these discs with no problem while others do not. A DVD needs to spin much faster to transfer the increased amount of data. Some drives are simply not built for it.
My most recent profiles have altered the BD-5 & BD-9 encoding parameters to be more in line with AVCHD spec.

Thank you very much Ryu for explaining that. I believe I am clear on that now. So is it safe to say all of your encoding profiles are more in the spec of AVCHD, or just the ones with AVCHD in the name?

The newer ones "are" the ones labelled with AVCHD in the name of the profile.

Doesn't BD-Rebuilder accept MKV as input? If not, remux your MKV with tsMuxeR to Blu-ray first, then use BD-Rebuilder.

**Explanations and uses for the above applications**
AnyDVD-HD: This is commercial software but one that I would highly recommend. It is the absolute cornerstone to all of the preceding information found in this thread. AnyDVD-HD removes all encryption and copy protection on the fly from your Blu-ray, HD-DVD or DVD as soon as you load a disc into your drive. This application will allow you to rip your movie onto to your Hard Drive.
tsMuxeR: tsMuxeR is a transport stream muxer which supports most HD input formats. Input formats supported are elementary streams, ts, m2ts, evo, vob, mpg and Matroska (mkv/mka). Input video can be h264, VC-1 or mpeg2. Input audio can be aac, ac3, e-ac3 (DD+), Dolby True HD (for streams with AC3 core only), DTS and DTS-HD. This application also supports subtitles. The subtitles imported can be in the native BD Presentation Graphics Stream format or tsMuxeR can convert text based (srt) subtitles to Presentation Graphics Stream (.sup) format. Output formats are ts, m2ts and Blu-ray.
FixCLPI GUI: A small application for correcting the seeking issues (FF/REW) that result from multiplexing (muxing) with tsMuxeR.
BD Rebuilder: An all in one application that re-authors a Blu-ray disc. This application gives you the option to keep the entire disc (menus, extras etc.) or just the main movie. The choices available for your target size are DVD-5, DVD-9 or BD-25. This application automates video encoding with x264 and audio encoding with Aften's AC3 (Dolby Digital) encoder.
EVO demux: EVO demux is a HD-DVD demultiplexer. It's a GUI based on drmpeg's demux 0.3. It is capable of saving all streams, reading info from XPL file or from the EVO with drag and drop support.
mkv2vob: mkv2vob will remux MKV files with h264 video and AC3 audio to a VOB file which is playable on the Sony PS3. If incompatible streams are detected mkv2vob will transcode these to mpeg2 for video and/or Dolby Digital (ac3) 5.1 @ 640kbs for the audio.
EAC3to: A commandline application for converting E-AC3, TrueHD, PCM and DTS-HD audio tracks to AC3, DTS or FLAC. Extracts AC3 frames from Blu-Ray AC3/TrueHD tracks. Extracts DTS core from DTS-HD tracks etc. etc. EAC3to also equipped with a wide variety of audio filters.
HdBrStreamExtractor: A GUI for EAC3to that allows easy identification of the playlist that points to the correct main movie M2TS files on a Blu-ray disc. This application will also allow you to export a text file with the chapter information and you can also select and demux the streams you wish to keep. This application must be executed from the EAC3to folder to function correctly.
EAC3to and More GUI: A GUI for the command line application EAC3to (and other applications). This GUI makes the wide variety of features available in EAC3to available for those that are not familiar with command line scripting.
UsEac3to: Another front end (GUI) for EAC3to. This is easier to use than Eac3to and More GUI. However, there are less features that are available. Extra commands can also be entered manually.
AVIsynth: An absolute must have for anyone into video/audio encoding. This is one of the most powerful video processing tools available. It utilises a massive filter base and offers on the fly frameserving, eliminating the need to waste hard drive space with temporary files.
AVSedit: A front end (GUI) for AVIsynth.
SUPread: SUPread can show the subpictures (sup/.pts files) demuxed from HD-DVD discs by EVOdemux. This application is also able to convert srt (SubRip) subtitles to Blu-ray compatible (sup) subtitles.
abc.png: SUPread uses this as a reference point when converting the text based srt subtitles to the bitmap sup files needed for Blu-ray authoring.
SubRip: An OCR (Optical Character Recognition) program used to rip subtitles from a DVD and convert them to srt (text based), which then can be used in various forms of containers and authoring applications.
Subtitle Workshop v2.51: Subtitle Workshop has the ability to import and export almost every variation of subtitle format that exists. It also has quote an extensive toolbox (fps conversion, spellcheck, case conversion etc.).
RipBot264: A very simple and easy to use GUI for encoding various types of video to h264. Includes profiles for iPod, PSP, Game Consoles and Blu-ray.
MeGUI: This application can accept an AVIsynth script and transcode to various video (h264, Xvid, LMP4 and Snow) and container formats (mkv, mp4 and avi). This application also includes a mkv, mp4 and avi muxing tool and other various tools.
Ryu77 MeGUI AVCHD/Blu-ray Profiles: These are some profiles that I have created for the x264 encoder via the MeGUI interface. These profiles are optimised for quality and are AVCHD/Blu-ray compliant.
BDedit: A GUI to edit files on a Blu-ray disc (index.bdmv, *.clpi, *.mpls).
AVIAddXSubs: An application for multiplexing avi (video + audio) and subtitle files into the DivX media format container. The DivX media format is an extension of the avi container that allows mutiple audio tracks, subtitles, menus and chapter points etc.
MediaInfoRaw: This tool gives detailed information about your media file and the elementary streams it contains.
MKVtoolnix: This is a set of tools to create, edit and give detailed information about Matroska (MKV) files.
MKVextractGUI: A GUI to demultiplex (demux) Matroska files. The MKVextract.exe from MKVtoolnix is needed for this GUI to run.
AVCHD-Me: An application that slightly modifies Blu-ray folders to be playable as an AVCHD from external media. Execute this application and navigate to your Blu-ray folders. This application will enable the folders to be played just like a disc would (DTS audio, chapters, subs etc.) but from external media.
im still amazed dvdfab 6 gets so little support or mention as it allows direct streaming/copying of a bluray movie (easier when already rippe dto the hd with anydvd), without any tsremux etc.
Ive already fit a dozen movies on 25gb simply just using anydvd and dvdfab 6

I recently encoded(menus and all) Friday the 13th(1980)which was on a BD-50 to a BD-25 with BD-Rebuilder and its look remarkable. However i tried the same thing(menus and all) but I wanted the target size to be a BD-9,it did fine, but i get no menus with it,even though i selected full backup. Anyone knows why,or am i doing something wrong? Thanks.
Ok,after further review the menus and extras are on the BD-9,however the menus are on as a still frame.I`m using my PS3 to play this BD-9 and it doesn't auto start,so i have to go under video and the disc comes up as a data disc,so i click on there.. I see my my BDMV and Certificate folder. If i click on BDMV,all these other files open up,including steam. I know the movie is in the stream folder.. I can play the main movie from there. Is there is way i can merge this,so it can start with the menu first? Thanks in advance.

I have been reading a lot of the current discussion, and wonder if you may be able to help me.?
I ripped Rambo 4 Blu-ray with Anydvd.hd. Then run it through BDinfo and got my main movie files, which I wrote down and then placed in TS-Muxer, I muxed it to a TS then converted it and burnt it with ConvertXvid to DVD onto a DVD-R5.
The problem I keep getting is I am unable to get rid of the directors audio, and not the main audio.
I have tried many different ways of making this backup, but with no success.
I had good success with "Öpen Season", and "Doom"
Please has anyone got any ideas
Thanks in advance

I hope someone can help me with this....I want to rip my HD DVD's to a full m2ts container, and then encode them using whatever profile I choose. The problem I am having is I can't get the audio to work when I remux. I'm following the HD to Blu Ray guide (external link on the first page of this thread). I just can't get audio to work.
Here is what I've been doing:
First I use EVOdemux. Here are my screenshots:
As you can see, video stream 0 is the one I want (I've confirmed this already). I selected all of the audio streams, as the guide says that there is no way to know the language of each stream. Although the VTI tab does tell me that the MPL audio stream is true HD.
I chose vc1 for video and ddp for audio, just as the guide says.
I then demux. The guide says that there should be 2 files and that I should rename them video.vc1 and audio.ddp. This doesn't make sense to me, since I know I chose to demux all of the audio streams. Well, in the end, I have all of my audio streams like I thought I would as you can see in the picture below.
So now I try to remux the audio and video streams using TS muxer. The MLP stream is not recognized by the program. The other ones are. I chose the 2 that were 384kbps 48kHz 6-channel AC3 as you can see below.
I open the final m2ts file in MP Classic, and there is no audio stream to select. The video looks great though.
I tried to use eac3to to create extract the wavs from the HD audio stream, but I need a nero plugin I guess, that I can't find. I want to create a DTS stream, and I know that I need the wavs and a program called Surcode DTS Pro. But I can't find a way to get the wavs out.
Any idea as to what I am doing wrong? Why can't I get the true HD audio stream to work? I hope someone can help me out, as I can't find a solution anywhere. In the end, I want a full HD m2ts file (both video and audio) that I can encode using MeGUI or ripbot. I don't care about making it "PS3" ready or burning to bluray disc or AVCHD for DVD-9. My PC is connected to my 46" plasma and I pretty much play everything in MP Classic off a couple TB HDD's, or I play all of my HD content through my Popcorn Hour.
Thanks

I'm very new to this. I got a new computer and blu-ray burner, primarily so I could edit a movie so it sucked a little less (this I have completed and have no problems with). I also want to backup my movies, and while 25GB discs are no problem, I will need to shrink the larger ones, and since I want to keep the menus sometimes, I'm having some trouble. I've tried BD Rebuilder with Iron Man (tested just the movie first) and set the target size to a blu-ray, and the output file was only 2 GB and the video had weird motion problems going on, like ripples in water.
What could I have done wrong? I haven't had a ton of time to practice with this since I've been processing the movie I edited and fixing errors on that.
So...
1. What do I need to do to shrink a blu-ray successfully?
2. Is there a way to keep True HD or DTS HD/MA with any of this stuff?

1) As far as I know, BD Rebuilder is the only application that will enable you to retain your menu. I don't use it so I am not that familiar with it. You could try here...
http://forums.afterdawn.com/t.cfm/f-157/...th_2009-733781/
2) Yes, there definitely is but I don't think this is possible with BD Rebuilder.
You could do it all manually like I do (and many others). All you need to do when re-encoding is calculate the bitrate required to meet the BD25 target. This has been discussed extensively throughout this thread.

Hey.
I just ripped my first blu-ray using Any DVDHD and all was fine and fairly quick(35 MINUTES).i USED power DVD to play back but there was no subtitles. How do i get the subtitles to start from the get go ?
The movie was "chocolate" just in case that matters.
Also can i delete every thing except just the main movie file and subtitles and still have it work ?
Also where are the subtitles located in a full BD rip ?

Hello,
I have read through most of this thread and I am a little confused.
Does the process described through this forum allow a Blu-ray movie to be ripped/encoded on to a regular DVD 5 or DVD 9??
I was under the impression that regular DVD 5 & DVD 9's could only hold a max bitrate of around 8,000 and the best resolution was 720x480.
Are my assumptions correct? If so, why are so many people encoding Blu-rays to DVD 5 & DVD 9, is there not significant quality loss compared to a retail Blu Ray or even a 25g BD disc ??
I have been encoding MKV movies(not full size Blu Rays) to fit on DVD 5/9 for a while but I was recently considering buying a blu ray burner in order to get a better video quality by having a higher bitrate and a better resolution quality, while utilizing a 25g BD disc. Is this not needed in order to have high quality 1080P discs??
Thanks for any responses!!
