My C2D machine takes 90mins in Rebuilder (it's an E6400 ie 2.13GHz) whereas my Q6600 takes 43mins. The C2D isn't too shabby but it's mainly used for Linux.

I shouldn't blow my own trumpet, but I like to think I know where it's at with quiet PCs, as my own gaming PC runs below 25dB.

I'll probably hang back on that until I know for sure what you're getting though. I missed a few pages of this thread so I lose track of how much progress has been made... ;-)

What I can say though is you should avoid refurbished or openbox motherboards.

Mort, i leave my machines on the default passes, which i think is 2. Nope, no building ISO or burning, my movies/episodics/concerts are all ripped with DVDFab, DVD-RB does it's thing then i burn at my leisure so my times are purely for DVD-RB phase 1 thru 3 (Prep/Encoding/Rebuild).

creaky,

by default RB/CCE is 2 passes. do you do full dvd, movie only or movie with menus? I always do full dvd but I run the ripped folder through dvdremake pro to remove the previews, adverts and warning screens prior to running it through RB/CCE SP.

I running a test now. did one a while back but I deleted it. I already have the rebuilder text document folder of the movie at three passes including building the ISO and burning. I'm running the same original folder through RB/CCE again except this time only 2 passes and no ISO or burn. I'll post the results shortly.

nah, i for one assumed you were taking about DVD-RB anyway :)

Mort - good point, i was talking movie only runtimes as they're the only ones i ever remember. Just checked thru DVD-RB's logfile for any full disc encodes like concerts etc, just found a few examples - Helloween - The Keeper of the Seven Keys Legacy Would Tour (awesome stuff!) - 106mins (that one had masses of VTS files or whatever they're called), an episodic disc of Space 1999 was 55mins, a Genesis concert 42mins and a disc from Michael Palin's New Europe was 75mins - any full dvd's i do like concerts or episodics are indeed 'full', i rip them in full disc mode with DVDFab then they get slapped straight into Rebuilder, the only things i chop out are duplicate soundtracks/audio (especially DTS tracks).

I used the slightly older version of that motherboard and it was excellent - you'll find recommendations of P5K and Maximus boards being thrown around here for their overclocking prowess, but unless you're going for an extreme overclock, the Gigabyte will serve you well for less cash. It'll even overclock quite well anyway.

I'm using the Thermalright Ultra-120A heatsink, and I'll be using it with a nexus 120mm fan shortly. I have been running it fanless and it works alright, but for guaranteed stability in all environments I'm going to put the fan back - suffice to say it's fine in my bedroom, but on a hot day at a LAN party the temps got a bit higher than I would like.

no reason to feel that way. you didn't know. we're all learning here. I appologize. that was not my intent. here's a good read explaining some differences between dvd shrink (transcoding software) and dvd rebuilder (encoding software) http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=55302

there's is nothing wrong with that mobo but personally I would move up to at least the X38 chipset at this time. more feature rich bios.

if you are trying to save some money get this one instead. it is basically the same board but with no ddr3, and fewer sata and usb.

Indeed, that motherboard has been used in many PCs of people around here, and others I know, and has been an excellent performer.

Sammorris: What about your case? LP recommended the Enermax Chakra, but I read reviews, and there are a couple design flaws like the flimsy plastic cover for the front external ports and the bad wiring for those ports. I was thinking about a CM Mystique, but I'm not too sure.

Mort: There is no need to apologize. It's not like you came up as hostile or anything. Thanks for the info on the link though.

I would really like to go with the DFI X38, but its layout looks like crap. All the PCI and PCIE ports are cramped together.

I use a relatively uncommon case for silencing or cooling, the NZXT Lexa. I primarily like it because:
1. comes with a carry strap - useful for dragging to LAN parties (admittedly not applicable in most cases)
2. Comes with several slots for fans, all intakes have dust filters
3. Easiest hard disk mounting system in the world (coolermaster also use the same system)
4. I think it looks good, that's personal taste though
5. Very lightweight, but sturdy

it isn't the most ideal silencing case in the world, but the fact that I've got it near silent tells that getting a high performance PC quiet isn't actually as hard as you might think. I'm getting a new Graphics heatsink soon which should only make things even better.

Things I've done to make my PC near silent:

1. Corsair power supply, preferably HX. These make almost no noise whatsoever, and whilst are marginally noisier than Enermax Modu82 units are much cheaper.
2. External hard disk boxes - this isn't to everyone's taste, but using Nexus drive-a-way boxes externally from my PC on a soft mounted surface has rendered my two main hard drives ABSOLUTELY inaudible. I tested them with the PC off and everything else in the room and I have to be closer than 5 inches to the drive to hear anything at all.
3. A decent graphics cooler - I use Radeon HD3870s, which aren't that loud normally, but no matter what card you get, I recommend using either a Thermalright HR-03 based product, or an Arctic Accelero S1 Rev 2. Exactly how good the latter are I will probably find out by the end of the week.
4. Thermalright Ultra-120A heatsink - it's so monstrously powerful at cooling that you can put a very low speed fan and get good temps. Low speed is low noise.
5. Nexus case fans - Everywhere. Reliably quiet with very little sample variance, and no longer that expensive. They may not blow you away like some fans but they're more than adequate and make no annoying buzzing, hissing etc.
6. Silent chipset cooling - Never buy a motherboard with a fanned chipset, it isn't necessary, and neither should be changing your chipset heatsink. If you must get a replacement chipset sink, get a Thermalright HR-05 and don't put a fan on it. Little whiney fans are the antichrist to silent computing
7. Noise absorption and a good case - I don't use the stuff myself but I've seen the effects of what it does, and especially if you don't want to go the external hard disk box route it works absolute wonders. The Antec P182 is the case in point for this - it comes with the stuff fitted and is a decently quiet case - provided you don't use the stock fans it comes with!

Very classy looking, and a good buy for $89 after $20 MIR. I'll probably use one for a D-940 build for my friends daughter, since I have a brand new one, a Freezer 7 Pro and the Optical drives handy! The drive door will keep the little ones out and away from the drives too!

It keeps steady noise level at 36.8 dBA while keeping 150W at 23.6 C over ambient on LGA775. Not too bad, and its pretty quiet, considering a steady speed of 1500RPM.

And if anybody can help me decide on a case, much appreciated. I just can't decide. I have three choices: Enermax Chakra, CM Mystique, and CM 690. I just want it to be quiet, and even a little cooling efficient is good.

hehe, you chose the Blackline I see. Because it's steel perhaps? :)

mrk: Did you say 36.8dB? The fan on that CPU cooler should only be about 22-23dB at the most.

as you can see, 3 passes verses 2 passes takes quit a bit more time. I run all my folders through using 3 passes. also building the ISO and burning is included in the rebuild time if you select to do it automatically.

I don't I'm afraid, but there's no reason why a 100mm fan at 1500rpm should make any more noise than that - the Nexus 90mm fans run at 1500rpm also and make 21dB of noise.

What I do know is that the fan I used on my CPU heatsink makes 20dB of noise and my load temperatures on a 1.8Ghz overclocked to 3.15Ghz were less than 45C.

Install any cooler before you install the MB. Doing that makes the job much easier and you don't risk getting cut doing it.
