The reason Oblibion can be so huge in so little space is that it uses tile based graphics. The file "Oblivion - Textures - Compressed.bsa" is a little over a gig and that contains all of the graphics in the game. I agree that the graphics are great but using tile based graphics it is possible to create huge worlds with very little resources by mapping tiles to coordinates. The upcoming Gothic III is supposed to have rendered graphics instead of tile based, so I am interested to see what effect that has on space requirements, though I doubt if the world will be as huge as Oblivion.
Back on topic, I don't really WANT to see any single company win the war. Competition is good and if a single company trounced the competition then you would only have what they offer and your choices would be severely limited.
In my opinion, the 360 will gain a lot of ground this time. It's always been my opinion that Microsoft never gets to the top until their third incarnation. Windows 1.0 and 2.0 were not impressive, but Windows 3.0 quickly took over. IE 1 and 2 were ok, but nowhere near as good as Netscape. It wasn't until IE3 that Microsoft had the better product. Word 1.0 and 1.1 were usable, but Word Perfect remained king until Word 2.0 for Windows. If that holds true, they will be the ones on top in the next generation past this one.
I am by no means counting Sony out, and I hope the Wii regains some market share and more importantly more 3rd party developer support this time. A 3 way tie is fine by me, I don't need to see a winner.

Eventually they would have to use the Blu-ray discs. Sometime or another a game is not going to beable to fit on one.

just a little bit off topic here but,
Quote: It wasn't until IE3 that Microsoft had the better product.
the only reason IE3 started owertaking Netscape was because Microsoft started throwing it in with windows (for free), and netscape costed money.

Not true, while Microsoft and Sony needed 4.7 GB-8.5 GB dvd discs (It hasn't even filled up the DVD-9 but that is not my point), Nintendo made it fit on only 1.4 GB!! Now that is some compression!! If this carries on, Nintendo will compress things about 1/6th of the opposing brands' sizes...meaning that on the Wii...which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data should be multiplied by six (if the same compression of the gamecube discs apply) to see the comparison of data requirements...in other words 8.5 GB for Nintendo Wii=8.5 GB multipled by six=51 GB for Sony so...Blu-ray has no advantage whatsoever if you think of it from this point of view...
The only true advantage I think is the creators of video games dont have to waste time compressing videos (cut scenes) in between the game...but still thats not much of a reward for developers...how long could it possibly take to compress videos...also do take note that developers have sexy high-end pc's...
Who agrees with me?
If I insult you...don't get offended...my insults are "friendly insults"...I know this sounds stupid (ridiculous) but I am fet up of writing, "no offense" in my posts...

No, I was thinking about the long run. Like 6 or 7 generations ( or more ) from now, they are bound to run out of room. Unless they just keep compressing things till the very niddy griddy but sooner or later you will have to have more space.

Yeah, eventually Nintendo will want more room on their media for their games, but in 6 or 7 generations Blu-ray and HD-DVD will almost certainly be obsolete (if curent trends in digital media continue). Besides, Nintendo has shown with the gamecube that great games can fit in small spaces anyway.
Excuse the use of the word, but for me the Blu-ray drive on PS3 is a gimmick, in that it won't improve gameplay. In my opinion people tend to prefer dedicated dvd players at the moment (Everyone I know with a PS2 or XBox has a dvd player as well), so it just pushes up the price without adding any 'real' value to the system.

Natony, about the fact that people prefer having a standard dvd player instead of a xbox or ps2 is probably true...but for standard blu-ray drives vs. ps3...I think will be different, first because of a dramatic price difference (ps3 is about half the price!! plus it can do many other things, play games for example!!) Having said all that...no I am not fanboy of Sony (I find this fanboy comment kind of stupid but Im just mentioning cuz I am not a fanboy...I don't HATE sony but I just don't like them...in the video game market...)
But enough negative talk about ps3, I'm sure it will have its strong points....but personnally I think people are better off with a Wii and Xbox 360 instead of a ps3...
P.S.
Personnally I am buying a Wii and thats it...I love Halo so much but after playing metroid on gamecube, I know the Wii will have 3 metroid games to keep me going until Halo 3 comes for the pc...(I actually think Metroid Prime 3 will be almost as popular as Halo 3, if not as popular...)
This is a bit off-topic here but...I wonder what will happen after the Wii, their next console...do you think Microsoft and Sony will imitate Nintendo? If they do...Nintendo wont die but they will go down big time...and as for the richness of a company....Mr. Nintendo (I dont know his real name exactly) makes profit! (300 something million $) but Microsoft and Sony LOSE MONEY!! Unbelievable...are they that stupid...I say this because from what I have heard Nintendo makes profit because they ship a good amount while microsoft and sony overship things and stores end up with consoles that no one will buy...so they lose money (in the video game market) (correct me if I'm wrong)
If I insult you...don't get offended...my insults are "friendly insults"...I know this sounds stupid (ridiculous) but I am fet up of writing, "no offense" in my posts...

Oh, ok. I didn't realise that a stand alone Blu-ray player would be so expensive. Personally I think I'm going to get a Wii and wait until someone comes out with a cheap, generic, made in China player that will play BluRay and HDDVD (I know it will be a few years, but DVD will be fine for me until then).

BluRay has yet made an impact on the market (at least in the US), and this will be a problem for Sony. I have never seen anything on this medai, and ppl are still not sure what to expect from it. I think Sony could have better chances of success if they introduced the ps3 when Blu Ray had become a typical form of media, or stick with DVDs. PPl have yet to see the benefits of BluRay, and combine this with the increased price to buy a game on this media, it gonna be an uphill battle for Sony.
