Yeah those Asians they're awesome.
It think that would be the crown jewel of the wii.
It is very possible. Snes9x (Snes emulator) has or had net play built in so you could play over a network. it didn't work as well as it could all the time but it was pretty neat.

Online code for the emulators would be difficult; but very awesome. All said and done, Nintendo is the only company that would take the time to do a thing like that right.
It would necessitate a re-working of the core game programming; but in all sincerity, in order to have N64 games running smoothly with (slightly) improved graphics, odds are that Nintendo is already dismantling the core components of these titles, and recompiling them to a much more emulable format. And I'm all for that.
Will they make multiplayer online? Who knows, but I'm sure that on the '64 alone, there are plenty of multiplayer titles that would soak up tons of people's time, I for one, could go for Goldeneye or Perfect Dark online (PLEASE don't start on which one you prefer, it doesn't matter, they're both great games, and that's not what this thread is about), realistially, those two would get so many die hards going for a long long time. However, aside from legal reasonings, there is also a notable factor, while many titles were released for the systems, they are not sole intellectual properties for Nintendo. Example: Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. Both made by Rare. Rare is now owned by M$. Nintendo *might* be able to find a legal workaround for a royalties system to pay Rare/M$ for the title's straight emulation distribution. HOWEVER, the odds of M$ allowing Nintendo (Again M$ now owns Rare, who made these) to actually recompile an intellectual property partially owned by them is VERY low. M$ would rather keep selling copies of PD:0. That's not to say that the sales of one would obscure the other (Again, please don't get into which you like better, that's not the point). But it simply means that a conglomerate like M$, or Sony or even Nintendo for that matter; is not going to allow a direct competitor to recompile for own personal profit, a title which is partially owned, wholly beloved, and possibly competitive to (what M$ considers to be) a key franchise now.
Long and short, for those legal reasons, this will probably happen. And for what are most likely much smaller cases, this is why I fear that the titles available will be almost exclusively Nintendo made titles. Which is a shame, but legalities can really hamper the success of something like this.
In another interesting note; Sega has been becoming very friendly to the idea of downloadable roms and repacks (for $$$) of their older titles (Particularly Sonic) recently, and may thrown in their Gauntlet(In more ways than one) as well. Also, to be noted Capcom has been proving interested as well, as demonstrated by a release of Street Fighter II "Something or other edition" for the 360 arcade. This is of particular interest to me, because Capcom was responsible for a couple Zelda games on the gameboy platforms, and while I don't know if Nintendo is planning on supporting those systems on the Wii, I certainly wouldn't mind playing them again.
That's my two cents, I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes with them, but I don find this topic VERY interesting.

That way way more than two cents. It was a bank. Very insightful post i don't think anyone would have too many disagreements unless someone knows more about the legalities of the matter than you do

Hey, it's always possible. Forgive me if that was kind of long, but I sank my teeth into just about every aspect of gaming and electronics many years ago, and I just absorb more and more information as time passes.

Agreed. And since Street Fighter was multiplatform, it would be really nice to see a nice multiplayer iteration made ready for the Virtual Console.

Well in way. I was thinking of something that has a seeding system, The better you perform the highger your rank is. So if you live on it you might make it to number 1

Systems like that have their own good and bad points. It gives what seem deem to be an unfair advantage for those of us who simply can't put that much time to put in. In fact, a lot of online games used to use a system like this, but found that they lost a lot of players because of it.
There will always be those who can play all day, and they are a tiny minority, who tend to discourage the rest of players. Newer games have moved towards favoring skill and tact, rather than sheer amount of gameplay. And for the most part, this has been seen as a huge step forward. I don't see it changing, but if Nintendo can come up with a way to do it, using hours AND skill, I would be very pleased.
As far as fighting merits go, I would suggest a lot of people should check the rewards system used for DOA4 on XBox Live, it is one of the most balanced ones I have ever seen, meriting on time played, as well as skill and pure merit. I was really pleased with how it was set up.

I think you're right. Just sitting and playing all day is by no means a measure of skill.

I'm guessing from your prior posts, that last post had a very valid point. But I couldn't make out the second portion of it. Edit?

My belief is that the emulator on the Wii may not be software, I think it will be hardware. If your familiar with Ben Heck's work with Noac chips (Nintendo on a chip), then it would be far more compatible to have a couple system on a chips in the Wii. Since Nintendo is making the system and not some guy with a soldering iron, they can even redesign/optimize the chips for the Wii. The compatibility would come down to the difference in technologies. For example I can see connecting to the Nintendo free wifi network to play a gamecube game, being much easier than playing mario party from n64 with your asian pen PAL. Either way, a hardware emulation will be more compatible with games and with utilizing the Wii's newer tech, such as Wifi, better sound and graphics, motion sensitivity. I can see older games being retooled to use these new technologies, such as Final Fantasy 3 on DS now uses the stylus and has 3d graphics. Then again if the old roms aren't retooled, it will make playing ones we "already" have, much easier. Say if one day we find a way to host a rom from our PC, and download it to the Wii, through the WiFi...
hehe...I just had the wierdest idea. Some Chris Farley wannabe, at a starbucks, playing a portable Wii, splashing coffee everywhere, while trying to kill some ninja in beverly hills.
Upon reading my post (after its posted), the Forum hyperlinked "Pal" in "asian pen pal". Perhaps only I see the irony.
