yes, Instead of using the serial connector just replace it with the male end of a usb cable.

I use a serial to USB adapter. I googled serial to USB driver and installed the one that came up. Works like a charm on my homemade tool.

so if i were to hook this up via usb instead, would i need the resistors and the npn still? and would the signal be on the D+ or D- wire?

The tool will not change just the method of hooking it to the PC. I made the tool based on the schematic and then added the serial to usb adapter and installed the driver.
I got the resistors and the npn from an old Compaq monitor (only thing a Compaq is good for IMO). If you have a piece of junk electronics laying around you might luck out and find what you need. If not then Radio Shack will have it and should not be more than a couple of $. For sure cheaper than buying the tool.

I'm trying to help a guy by modding his lite-on.
I don't have parts or anything yet but don't want to pay the $60 that people are charging locally here in Northern Kentucky to do it. I'm going to try and build this.
Once I build the probe and extract the key is there a link or instructions are where to go from here? Is pulling the drive tray half way the next step to writing to the drive or is that another tool?
I understand the main purpose of this tutorial is to extract drive information but what if you want to mod the drive after you extract it?

No. The main purpose of this tut it build your own tool which is required for stock Lite On's.
Go to the download section here, www.jungleflasher.net , for the tut to extract the drive information.

I just got done making this...is there any need for a ground on the 5volt if I am using a Red wire on one of the computers power connectors?

I used two one to the PC and one to the 360. Better safe than sorry I thought. I would hate to buy a new 360 because I was careless. The best thing I can recommend it us a voltmeter to test the out coming current, if you build it wrong it will push more than 5 volts which could fry your Liteon, just a recommendation. If you don't have one then just run with it.

Well I just went to plug in the serial cable and I have no port. Apparently when I built the computer I didn't think I'd be using the serial cable so I just didn't hook up the adapter.
I'm going to have to attach it directly to the motherboard..can someone tell me what the 2 pins on the serial cable are for??
Is it Rx Tx or Ground? I believe they are pin 2 and 5...I have my motherboards schematics so I can tell which pin i need to connect to.
Thanks for everyones help.

Okay, I am not able to extract the key. I get that ****WARNING**** BAD SERIAL or something like that...I've tried the multiple different methods using different software, but it is still unsuccessful. I have no experience at soldering so I'm not sure if it's the probe I made...I haven't been able to check. I read something about using a multimeter or hyperterminal, but I haven't found anything explaining how to do it.
I do have some questions though about the materials...
1. It says earbud wires. Any earbud wires? What other wire can be used? Mine were earbud wires that had two small copper wires from each main wire (one for left, one for right ear). Sound okay?
2. If I wanted to take a transistor out of an old monitor, how do I tell which one will be okay to use? Also, how can I tell which leg is the base, emitter, collector? I've read that some transistors are different, so the base on one might not be the same leg as another...
Please help...Thanks.
****EDIT: I have a multimeter now...Does anyone know how to test the key extractor spear? I only have this for tonight so help is appreciated. Thanks.

I have the maximus 360xtractor and spear. I get the **bad serial data** error now. I used my friend's usb probe and worked just fine. there doesn't seem to be much to his probe but he wouldn't let me take it apart. I'm desperate and i hate to think my spear is bad. I've modded quite a bit, and i get it to work with his probe but not my set up....please help me

I wouldn't let you take mine apart either. Just look at page 25 of this thread **Click Here** New ixtreme 1.5 Updates! and make one. Radio Shack has everything you need as I just bought the stuff the otherday to make a few more for friends.

First off, thank you VERY much for the detailed walkthrough. I'm stumped though. Went to the shack, bought the parts, built my own spear, plugged into rs232, grounded, used molex from an old external drive for power, opened JF, put drive in standby, plugged the spear into the rs707 hole on dvd board, keep getting bad serial error when i select "get key, create dummy bin..." Hooked the spear through Hyperterminal and it is working. Been pouring over multiple threads all day and still no luck. Any help greatly appreciated.

If your spear is working through HyperTerminal then you're probably not setting up the drive properly for the retrieval process.
Remember you have to turn it off with the tray open, close it half way and remove pin 3 from the drive's power cable so that it doesn't pull the tray back in next time it comes on and THEN you'll be in proper key retrieval mode.
I had the same issue. Did about 5 different successful spears but always got either random keys or bad serial data errors and later found out I wasn't setting the drive up properly for the process. The x-scene tut has a pin layout to help you find the right one to remove.

Thanks for the response MadBoomah. The tut I followed said (if using 360 to power drive) to eject drive, unplug, manually push drive half way back in, plug power back in. When i follow this method, the drive does stay in the half open position. Do i still need to find and remove pin 3? I'm this close to getting the sledgehammer...

Removing the pin is the ONLY way you can be assured the drive is in the proper state.
