The problem is the disk's format. Casino Royale has a dvd rom extra that opens every time you use it. This indicates that the dvd is not in the usual file format that DVD Decrypter and Shrink are programed to look for. Instead the entire movie is run under the DVD-ROM program on the disk stopping Decrypter and shrink for finding the files.

It does this with ANY movie with a DVD-ROM overlay.

This is Sony's new way of stopping people from Ripping their movies. They run the dvd through a program. So just watch out for any DVD published by sony in the future because they will probably contain the same thing and you will not be able to copy them.

I have found that Ripit4me works and so does dvd fab but that is because they search the dvd differently and are thus able to find the files that sony so cleverly hides.

Hope this helped

Anyone gullible enough to listen to something like that deserves their fate. LOL DVD Decrypter was freeware and there were no registered versions. The rest of the comments are similar drivel. The history of DVD Decrypter was well documented on the forums and the last version, 3.5.4.0, is still avialable for download at a few sites. It's still obsolete unless it's used in a program like RipIt4Me (which appears now to have gone the way of DVD Decrypter). RipIt4Me doesn't appear to be available any longer.

DVD Decrypter still being updated eh, there's a new one (laughs carefully as if 'updates' are being sent to that poster he or she should run and hide now, as my understanding is that 'the authorities' took over DVD Decrypter) :P

RipIt4me is an can easily be classed as an update for DVD Decrypter and it can still be found as i downloaded it only a couple of days ago.

Here is the address to it: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/RipIt4Me/1159478103/1

And yes i was wrong about DVD Decrypter i was thinking about DVD2One and got the 2 programs confused.

However the reason that it is so hard to rip Casino Royale is because of the DVD-ROM feature which DVDShrink can not navigate.

However the reason that it is so hard to rip Casino Royale is because of the DVD-ROM feature which DVDShrink can not navigate.

DVD ROM is the universal disk format used for DVD players. Initially ROM meant Read Only Memory, but the meaning has changed a little in context with DVDs. We're talking about universal standards that came about in the mid nineties. So, the unprotected factory DVDs are on a DVD ROM format as well as the more newly encrypted ones. So, DVD ROM has little to do with whether Casino Royale is hard to copy or not. That boils down to companies like Sony, Lionsgate, Disney and others adding additional copy protection, besides the original CSS encryption. So, instead of saying things that sound good, you need to check out the technology and how it works.

The discussion was on decryption and decryption software. I don't know how you could mistake DVD Decrypter for DVD2One. DVD2One has nothing to do with copy protection, except it won't open a copy protected DVD on its own. So, you couldn't possibly have used DVD2One to rip (decrypt) any DVD with copy protection, including "The Prestige". You would have had to have some software to bypass the copy protection.

By the way, DVD Shrink has been navigating DVD ROM since the day the program was completed up till now. All those factory DVDs are on DVD ROM discs and the program can still do some of them on its own. The problem arises with the heavier copy protection. As I said before, DVD ROM is the universal player format (UDF) and was there for the first player and will be there for the last DVD ROM player.

I'd appreciate it if you would stop calling me and others a liar when you obviously have a problem understanding DVD formats, the technology and how the backup software works.

2 to nothing - pacman777. What else do you have onilord? Your DVD-rom evaluation makes no sense onilord, but I can tell you have the right intentions by migrating away from Shrink.

I'm not trying to make points. Since this is the ripping forum, I'll be the first to say that Shrink shouldn't be used to rip Casino Royale. The decryption software in Shrink is obsolete and never was the best, even when the program still had support. The author noted DVD Decrypter should be used when problems came up with the Shrink decryption software. DVD Decrypter is now obsolete, but in use with RipIt4Me is one of the best decryption systems available. However, DVD Shrink is still a good transcoder with some editing abilities.

AnyDVD with CloneDVD 2, Recode, and others can get the job done. There have been conflicts between DVD Shrink and AnyDVD with the newer copy protection. Shrink is still a good transcoder, it's not over the hill yet. DVDIdle and Slysoft decryption software have been working well. RipIt4Me has been doing a good job, but the home site is down and downloads, though available, are drying up. As long as everyone keeps the software up to date and use it properly (in known working configurations) there should be no problems with the new copy protection like that found on Casino Royale.

i can't fathom why some of the posters allegedly having trouble with this and other movies don't just try out DVDFab Decrypter (it's free, and awesome, oh and mindnumbingly simple to use to boot). I personally always use DVD Shrink afterwards but once DVDFab has done it's thing then other programs can be used if people so wish.

its difficult. atleast for the bonus disc so far, i've had no success with a nec 8x 2510a, it gets read errors with ripit4me. i tried another pc using an older pioneer slot loading dvd drive and it gets servo errors on the disc. right now trying dvdfab decrypter on that pc and i had to choose to ignore read errors, its still crunching away.

on the nec drive it doesn't even detect the disc sometimes, and on both when running ripit4me the time to initialize the disc after clicking 1 click mode takes quite a while when it reads through the 27sections or whatever. this is the most annoying disc ever:( and i've ripped other things just fine like open season.

i do 99.9% of my rips on CD-writer/dvd-rom combo drives, i don't like to use burners for ripping duties.

What have you found wrong with ripping from a burner drive? I started ripping from my previous burner drives and am having some reading errors. I thought maybe the burner is going bad. Do you know of some problem that is caused by using a burner to do this? I would hate to throw away a decent burner, although it is only 4x.

..with newer burners, nothing wrong, i just don't like to give the burners extra work. Older burners were'nt as good at ripping though.
My oldest combo drive is now 4years old and for some odd reason is on a mission, it just never lets me down, even after many 1000's of rips. it'll probably end up in the Guinness Book of Records one day

well successfully ripped the movie disc using the nec. at ripit4me startup it goes through that x/100 part after clicking one click mode. so it has to go through more whatevers than on the bonus disc which was only x/27... yet the bonus disc is impossible to rip! for me atleast, maybe i got a borked disc. can anyone confirm that the bonus disc is harder to copy than the movie disc?

Just starting to back-up this DVD, and using ripit4me 17.0.0. Unable to find a copy of the beta 17.1.0 or the beta. Ripit4me site appears to be down at the moment. Normally when a new version comes out, I'm prompted to download the new version when I start ripit4me. Program tells me that no new version is available from the one I'm using

Into the Decrypter phase, and log shows that it's extracting sectors and inserting dummy sectors at the same time. Still in the first large VOB file, and it's taking much longer than normal.

Maybe these dummy sectors are a normal function and I just have never paid attention to the logs while decrypting before, but wonder if this might be a sign that all is not going well.

Anyone else get this back-up done without the new beta version of ripit4me?

Thanks!

Did it all fine without the beta of ripit4me. Used the newest of ripit4me with DVD Decrypter, ripped it fine, although it took a while.

1.7.1.0 is the finalized version following the beta. It has the incorporated FixVTS code and the skip to Shrink feature when light copy protection is found. All versions have depended on DVD Decrypter for ripping, FixVTS for compliance processing, and Shrink does the compliance test with the quick analysis. The standalone version of FixVTS is no longer used (it's built in now). I suggest everyone update. Until the entertainment industry comes up with a new copy protection to defeat it, RI4M is among the better decryption tools available.

Did this movie with DVD Shrink and AnyDVD running in background without any problems.

Do not really understand posts that suggest the Shrink and AnyDVD are not working well together - I've had no problems with any older or newer movies using this combination.

Key maybe to have remove annoying ads and trailers and jump directly to main movie selected in AnyDVD.

AnyDVD + DVD Shrink has failed for too many people for it to be a coincidence. Plus, Shrink has exhibited the same problem with other heavily copy protected releases. When it happens I usually get the insufficient memory error on my system or can't read a particular VTS. I've got 2GB RAM with more than 1GB free and I have huge hard drives with lots of free space. When using files processed for DVD compliance I don't get the error. As I said, lots of other people are experiencing similar problems with Shrink and AnyDVD.

Glad you got your backup, but others haven't been as lucky.

@ PacMan777

As a regular reader of these forums, I am aware that many members have experienced problems with some of the newer movies. I am not sure why. As I have indicated, I have not had any problems using the DVD Shrink and AnyDVD combination.

Recent movies done with this combination include:
Casino Royale
Borat
The Departed
The Prestige
Gridion Gang
Devil Wears Prada
Talladega Nights
The Sentinal
Priates of the Caribbean (dead mans chest)

All burns are backups of the original and are not downloads. I always play a movie for 30 seconds or so before opening in DVD Shrink.

My computer specs are a little lower than yours:
P3 - 800
256 Mb Ram
OS - Windows 2000
Burners - Pioneer 106D and Pioneer 111D
Medium used - Verbatim

While I have downloaded Ripit4me and DVDFABDecrypter, I have never used them as I have not had any reason to.

I can normally encode a movie in less that 30 minuites and burn at 4X in less than 15 minutes. Reliabily rather than speed is my major concern.

Again, I do not understand why the DVD Shrink/AnyDVD combination is not working for others - I have yet to strike any problems with it.
