Like I said, I've never had a problem with my JVC playing anything before. TYs, verbatim (my media of choice), Sonys even some old Riteks I've burned a couple of yrs ago. Doesn't matter if it's -R or +R. Only issue I ever had prior to this was with a crappy RCA I bought in 2000 that wouldn't play anything that wasn't store bought.

The new Casino Royale/DVD player thread. LOL
Casino Royale isn't much of a problem when using the right software. And most DVD players aren't picky. We hear more about problems that come up because forums are where people come to complain. Just think of all the people who don't have problems and say nothing. ;)

Burning 16X on a CMC Magnetics disc is a sure invitation to trouble. That's the same company that ruined Memorex. Get some good media, Sony +R, Taiyo Yuden, or Verbatim. Get Made in Japan if you see it on any of the labels. Sony +R (MIJ) is TY. Taiwanese Sony +R is by Sony and also a good media. Get some of the good stuff and try a slower burn at 4 to 8X. You can try slowing the burn down on the CMC first, but I don't trust that media.

I use Verbatim DVD+R discs as previously stated.
At least that is what it says on the DVD disc itself. I'm not sure why it would say something else.

If that's the log for the Verbatim +R it is still CMC manufactured and CMC has a bad rep. I'd heard CMC had made some media for Verbatim, but hadn't run into any before. What country are you in?
By the way, Verbatim is just a brand name. The media is manufactured by different companies. MCC is Mitsubishi, TY is Taiyo Yuden, and Ricohjpn is Ricoh. Those are good media manufacturers who are or have manufactured media for Verbatim.

I'm in the US. These DVD+Rs are probably about 6 months-1 year old. I purchased them at Wal-Mart in the US.
What brand names and/or stores do you recommend?

I'll have to be more careful when I buy Verbatim in the future. At Wal Mart I usually purchase the 50 pack of Sony +R (not -R), either Japanese or Taiwanese. As I mentioned, both are good and MIJ is TY and MIT is Sony. I've not kept track of the other brands. Fuji 16X made in Japan used to be TY. If you can find name brands with made in Japan on the label, you're usually in luck. Taiyo Yuden and Ricoh are also good brands. Those are usually found online. Meritline has a decent rep. I've ordered media from Best Buy and other big vendors, but I used to know more about what media was being sold under different brand names. That's hard to keep up with, so I started using Sony and probably will as long as they keep the quality up on the formats I use.
If I were you, before doing a lot of other things, I'd try some different media and burn at a slower speed, something like 4 to 8X. 8X should be okay with good 16X media. Have you tried a 4X burn with the media you have?

DVD Shrink gives me the option to burn at 1x, 2x, and 2.4x.
Should I keep Book type DVD-ROM and "Burn at least 30mm" checked?
I'll try first with the media I have.

- as i said further up the reply, the firmware can definitely recognise the discs ok, just doesn't mean it likes them :) I've mooched around and can't see what's changed in the firmware but it's always good to keep updated. My feelings on CMC media aside, i've yet to read much positive info anywhere about these particular 16x discs..

VMO,
Maybe you should think about freeing up more resources instead of burning at slower speeds. Faster speeds are always desired. Close some applications while burning or get more memory.

excuse me? Don't think so.... You get less problems burning at lower speeds. If you look you'll see that alot of experienced people in here still burn at lower speeds...

Ha! Of course you get less problems but if they come out with a 52X DVD burner are you really going to keep burning at 2.4 or 4X to be safe? I don't think so. If you have all the resources dedicated to the burning such as lots of free memory and a powerful processor, you will not have to always burn at slower speeds. I keep at least 400 MB memory free and turn off most other apps while burning at 18X and have not had one failed disc. I had many apps and little to no memory available on a burn once and the burn failed. That teaches a lesson that you don't have to worry about bad burns at higher speeds as much, as long as you have dedicated resources. You're cracking me up basically stating that we stay a couple of years behind technology so we have little risk.

What's the rush?
I'd rather burn at a lower speed than trying to figure out why the disc won't play. I'm in no hurry.

res2cue,
I will give you your props for being a slysoft man though.
Are there really that many people out there that are creating Coaster after Coaster? I must say I am clueless as to the amount of coasters that currently get produced. At top speed burn, I get about 1 Coaster out of every 200 burns and I can always point to having low resources for that odd burn.
My hurry is that I burn a lot, I guess if it was just the occasional burn like once every other week, I would not care if it burnt at 1X if it burnt during the middle of the night, but I am busier than that. Why get a faster processer? Why get a quad core? What's the hurry? This is what I am hearing from these posts.

Though the Core 2 Duo is faster than my poor old AMD, I'm not suffering with my dual core running 2.8-3GHz (OC). I'm fast, but not the fastest in town. LOL
I concentrate on quality when it comes to video work. I usually use a slow reading program when it ocmes to heavy copy protection. I like to make sure I get a good read for the rip. So far my methods have been a sure thing. Most of the time I use Rebuilder Pro with CCE SP set to 3 passes. Usually 1 pass more than needed, but I like that edge for security. When it comes to burning speed, it doesn't increase geometrically. 16X isn't twice as fast as 8X. Normally I burn at 6X. With the media I use and the burner, I've burned at 16X and had no problems. Since I'm not saving much time with a faster burn from an already long recording process, I opt for the slower speed as a comfort factor. I don't advocate burning fast, nor do I suggest creep speeds either. If a person wants to burn high speed crank it up. Just remember to back off when/if errors start to creep in. A poor batch of media can cause it and even the better media, such as Verbatim, can come up a little short on quality sometimes.
The system resources, particular drive, and media play a significant role. It would be nice if everyone had optimal conditions all the time. Most of the time part of the equation comes up short. That's why a slower speed is often recommended. It sounds as though you pride yourself in the hardware and racing to save the last second. For one so impatient, all I can say is go for it. ;) But, excuse me if I don't suffer the same need for speed. I'm more quality oriented and like the sure deal and being comfortable I'll get repeated high quality backups. I've got a big screen and I don't want to settle for less.
I used to burn at 4X, but with faster drives and better media I've moved up 2 to 4X. Who knows, when those burners and media get good enough to go 24X, I may be ready for 12. LOL

Well, as you know, I don't have a quad or a duo. I am still running on an athlon 1.4, but I respect the innovators that get the latest and greatest. I only stay with a 1.4 because of cash concerns. My system works great so I have no reason to rock the boat right now. To be honest with the prices of dual layer getting cheaper and cheaper, I see us all converting to DL media pretty soon anyway, which will make most of this conversation moot. Right now, I am seeing it for $1 per disc. As soon as it gets to .50, I will be on board.
You are right about me with my need for speed though. I had let you know previously that I burn about 3 discs per day, sometimes up to 7 or 8 in a day, so burning speed is key for me. I just wish I could afford a new motherboard and processor of the high end dual core so my ripping and comression speeds would speed up. Every minute counts when you are doing a lot of movies and with CloneDVD, you get the most excellent quality every time :)
