Hi -
First... just wanted to say THANKS to you amazing people who have made it possible to do some great stuff with the PS2, and have helped people out with your posts and tutorials. I've been happy to rescue my kid-damaged games from certain death.
I wanted to report on my results with Gran Turismo 4 / GT4.
I got my DVD5+R backup running.
The key point I wanted to highlight is:
Depending on how you run games on your PS2, you may need
to run the "ESR Patcher" on your GT4 ISO image, just before you
burn it, in addition to the directions given in the tutorials.
First, I am running two unmodded / fat PS2's. Both are now running Free McBoot off memory cards.
To run my game backups, I have ESR installed on the memory card to read the DVD-R discs (like most users of the Free McBoot exploit probably are).
The tutorials found here to shrink the DVD9 of GT4 down to a single DVD5 DVD+R disc do NOT include a step to patch the ISO for ESR. I'm guessing that the TUT's were originally set up for people using modded PS2s, and they must not have needed the ESR patch.
So- if you're like me... just run ESR Patcher (like you would for any other game backup) on the ISO image that you create with the DVD9 to DVD5 ripkit and tutorial. THEN burn it to DVD.
My backup copy on DVD5 seems to work quite well, except for LAN mode, which other people have also reported not working. Just seems to be stuck in "loading" forever, if you pick LAN mode.
During the tutorial, I did run into two snags with .OCX files not being setup.
One file is provided with Sonix's ripkit, and following readme's fixed that one. The other OCX also required a web search for info and a place to download from (also mentioned somewhere in this thread.)
I deviated from the tutorial by using Imgburn instead of DVD decrypter, which apparently was ok.
One of my PS2's has a HDD installed now and HDloader (0.8c I think).
GT4 works great on there without any special shrinking.
Just take the raw ISO file that you make from the original discs, and install it direct to the ps2's HDD using WinHIIP.
( I don't recall if it needed the ESR patch on it...)
Again, thanks!
Just wanted to share the tip on ESR patcher, since that hung me up for a while.
Cheers!

Hey Smoky! Got it, thanks.
I rebuilt it but it hangs at the sony screen, interstingly, the same thing happens when i copied and patched my gt3 (i got 2 gt3 isos and both had the same problem, pss downsample said this file 'MENU_BG2.PSS' was either corrupt or not compatible). I'm using fmcb by the way. Also, after rebuilding gt4, there were some pss files left in the extracted folder. I downsampled at 55%. The tutorials i found are for the pal version too. I'll keep searching and trying though. Wish me luck!
GT4 is up and running, how? Used GT4 DVD5 Ripper tool to extract, used PSS DOWNSAMPLE tool to downsize to about 700MB (NB: The opening movie scene doesn't play though, it stays on a white screen, however, it's not frozen, just hit the X button), used GT4 DVD5 Ripper tool to rebuild it, deleted 'extracted' folder and old vol file, used GT4 DVD5 Ripper tool to browse for rebuilt vol file, click patch, selected SCUS file, click ok, used CDVD GEN to build iml, used IML2ISO to build iso, used ESR patcher to patch, used IMGBURN to burn at 2X to a Smartbuy DVD-R (These are made by Prodisc) I use these discs because they have never failed me yet. All others have. There is a 'certified quality AAA grade superior technology' logo stamp thingy on it. I don't know if you guys know them, but give em a try.
Well, I'm gonna try work on GT3 now.
Later.

The .mds file is basically only needed for the DVD9 games for the dual layer break.
So once your rebuild the game to a DVD5 it is really no longer needed.

You guys rock man....my only question is although your method is quite easy to follow in comparison to some of the other ripkits out there, do you have a particular ripkit that works with Guitar Hero 5 NTSC format?

You were correct in your other post. Some PS2 DVD9 games require their own ripkit, so the only one is the one I posted in that thread.

i have done the steps as advised above
i used alcohol to burn the image onto a dvd-r to use in my fat ps2 with a modchip (i dont know which modchip as the ps2 was a gift pre-modded)
however upon playing the game, after the "Playstation" screen flashes past the screen starts to "scroll" vertically. the game still responds to button presses and works properly other than this scrolling issue.
im not sure if this is called "skipping" so im not sure how to search for a solution

Is your PS2 NTSC or PAL, cause it sounds like a PAL screen problem, when playing on NTSC PS2.
Most modchips will fix that though, but if your not sure what modchip you have, I can't help you there.
The only other thing you could do is patch the ISO before you burn it with PAL to NTSC patcher.
You can find on sksapps.com

i can only see the ntsconv4, which seems to only work for .bin files
do i need to convert the rebuilt iso to bin or is there a way to patch iso directly?
im not sure if my ps2 is ntsc or pal, probably ntsc
UPDATE: after patching the rebuilt iso with ntsc to pal patcher the screen still has issues and does not display colour
there is a SLIGHT improvement between patching and non-patching in that the "warning" screen right after the "Playstation 2" is not scrolling, but everything after that is

Ok that is not the correct patcher.
Ok first to see what region your PS2 is.
Go to Browser on the PS2, Press Triangle
YOu should see a SCPH-xxxxx
That is the number I need
Or look on the back of your PS2, it is there also.
Now if you have a HDTV, then download this pal>NTSC patcher - link
or just use this one - link
But first check your PS2 out for the Version number and post back

Ok so you already tried the patcher in my second link and it didn't work.
It has to be an issue with your modchip then.
YOu have to undo any changes from the other patchers if they don't work.
You could try the adr patcher 0.5 - link
It has undo features also.

It would make no difference if its DVD5 or DVD9
If your having no luck with it, I would say your best bet is too find NTSC version of it.
According to this thread, you have to scroll down or use CTRL + F to find Gran Turismo 4, it says it is not compatible with the patchers, but a couple people said it worked

Hey guys,
I'm trying to use the GT4 guide on this thread. Everything is going smooth so far. However, when i try to load up cddvd gen 1.5, i get an error saying.
"Setup is unable to find SETUP.LID. Error 105"
I'm running on vista x64 os. I've searched around everywhere for a solution, but can't seem to find anything. Is there an alternative method to use besides cddvd gen?
Appreciate the help, thanks.
Best.

Have you tried running in 'XP Compatibility mode' or 'run as administrator'
I can run it on Windows 7, but using 32 bit, not x64
I have a version that runs without installing - download CDvdgen

Hey smokeyrain,
Thank you so much for that file, it worked perfectly. Really really appreciate it.
I had tried using "XP Compatibility mod" and running as an admin. But nothing was working. I also tried all the other cddvd gen versions, but they all said the same thing. Or something about a missing, "Comdlg32.ocx" file.
But anyway, you solved that with the file you have. Thanks again.
Regards.
