I got a black screen once in Shadow the Hedgehog, and I all I did to fix it was press Special instead of Normal when booting SM 3.8.

Other than that I am not sure I have the link to the GT4 DVD5 Rip kit by sonix and tutorial, although it was for PAL version, the tutorial is still the same.
GT4 Rip kit
I know you have made so many copies already, thats insane. But worth a read in his tutorial and see if anything different.

hey just an FYI for GT4 PAL version, I did backup with 55% compression (about 4.28gb iso) and it boots fine with SM 3.8 coder. :)

Everything worked fine until I used PSS Downsampling Tool. When I dragged everything and clicked "Go" I got the message "Component 'ACTIVESKIN.OCX' or one of its dependancies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid."

I get this for every .pss file that I selected? Anyone know how to correct this? Thanks.

Nevermind, I found another thread that corrected this problem. I'll see if that works.

thanx for all the advice, i never got it but its ok, i found a used greatest hits for 9.99 cant beat that so i bought it. ne ways KD17 im guessing you fixed it but if not i know whats wrong. idk the exact names of them but there should have been a couple .dll files that came with the downsampling tool. u need to copy thos and paste them in your windows system32 fold "C:\WINDOWS\System32". after that it shold work. good luck to everyone on getting a converted GT4 game to work.

alkohol,
I tried to backup my US Gran Turismo 4, followed perfectly all the guide, and it didn't work. I can create an user, but after the tutorial from importing credits from GT3, it stays in a forever black screen.

Please, could someone help me?

every time i look at this thread there is another person dealing with Gran Turismo 4.

Look. the best way is this:

get a hard drive.

run hdloader8b, press install, put in the original GT4 disc, and install it on the internal hard drive.

works perfectly.

It also costs unnecessary money. Follow this guide, repeat if you screw up. It will work. I ran into my fair share of problems, but worked through them.

but when your laser burns out from playing burned games too much you'll be thinking about getting a hard drive + 50 bucks for a new laser. that's a waste of money.

play every game from the hard drive, and install most of them over the network so you use the laser in your computer's cdrom. and the PS2 laser BARELY gets used.

i am working on a guide for it right now that I may put up here sometime. except it's not really about copying games.

it bypasses copying games as a primary resolution for backing up games and uses an internal hard drive.

and you can get a 160gb hard drive for about 60 bucks these days. I got a 250 gb from a computer store for $65.

now, a new laser will cost you about $50, plus international shipping, plus you have to figure out how to get it into the Playstation 2, AND adjust the laser height gears, and the tangentional skew, AND possibly reprogram the EEPROM that controls the laser.

i've done all this. i've fixed about 5 Playstation 2's, and my recomendation is ALWAYS this:

use and internal hard drive.

An internal hard drive is fine for those who have V12 or less and if they so want to add one. You forgot the cost of a network adapter also for some. I play a lot of backups and my lasers have held on strong.
There are some good tutorials on site already for internal hard drives.

I agree though with KD17, follow the guide on page 5 for GT4 and it should work. All I can say for some of the those for whom it didn't work is that maybe you missed a step somewhere or its the media and speed with which you are burning.

It should also be noted that there are simple ways to fix an eye that has trouble working from reading so many burned games?

There's a little dial that only needs to be turned a few clicks and your fine. My eye stopped working a couple months ago from playing back-ups for months. I found the guide to fix it, turned the dial, and I haven't had one problem in about 6 months.

I'm not saying HDD's are bad, but unless your going to get absolutely everything out of it, they're a waste of money if you just use the help offered online.

You can view the images here
I had copied them quite some time ago and put them into a pdf file.
These are just the images from Step 5 until step 8.

If the game doesn't work after you burn it, then most likely you need to rebuild it and try again.

You always need either a software mod, or hardware mod to play backup PS2 games. Either it be a modchip, AR MAX, Independence EXploit, or Swap Magic.
Many threads on all topics, just do a search.
As for the guides yes they work, most in this thread are for Shrinking DVD9 games to a DVD5 single disk to play.
Read this whole faq for more info.

I've been backing up many PS2 games and using Swap Magic for a while now, and have followed the above steps to rebuild my first Dual layer game (God of War 2).

The disc plays fine but wont let me save games (keeps crashing), then when i try to loan previous saved games (from the original disc)with my back up, these too just freeze the game and i'm stuck!

Any of you helpful have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

NS

Have anyone successfully built the game "God of War II" and "Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance" DVD9 to DVD5? I want to backup this, but it will not allow me to play it by using SwapMagic. I think I need to compress it to DVD 5 in other to play it with SwapMagic.

Can you shre your experience if you made it?

I managed to get God of War 2 "backed up." I followed the guide posted on this forum, but I had to add a step. I have to boot first with Swap Magic, then have SM boot up Zone Loader, and Zone Loader brought the game right up. The same process I have to use for Scarface as well.
I'm using the slim-line PS2, and Swap Magic version 3.6.
