I got an error 16 on my retail x-box and when i start it up the big X comes forth but no white Microsoft logo, it just jumps straight to error 16, I read this tutorial and induced the error 12, disconnected the IDE of the x-box drive and had my comp on standby with the pause/break. It found the drive and I booted with the CD I burned with the xboxhdm.
Pressed option 1.
Typed 'xboxhd'
And then the penguin appeared in the top left corner and a lot of text.
I clearly saw multiple errors of some sort and right after that it said: bh with no client!? And I was like 'what the fudge?', then it somehow timed out and I got to the options screen and found out that some of the options was disabled, there was also a text that said that the drive was still locked in some awkward way.
So what I'm going to do next is to set my other comps Primary Master IDE on the x-box HDD while in pause like the previous attempt and the Secondary Master on my normal drive and see if I can open it with xplorer360 after inducing the error 12 and replace the dashboard files that way...
I would really like to know the reason for the first error though, bh with no client!? Anyone that knows anything about it?
Lot of text...
I hope my English is fairly understandable, live in Sweden.

A new post, I managed to get the first thing with the xboxhdm CD to work, but I always get to the point where the C drive is being built
Building C - Drive
chmod: /xbox_tmp/*: No such file or directory
and when it gets on to the E drive it says this:
Building E - Drive
mount : mounting /dev/hda50 on /xbox_tmp failed : invalid argument
Continue copying files from /xbohdm/e (yes/no)
Only to get back to the error 16 screen.
Any help?
Mendokusai... -.-

Hi chunkhead.
Im using this tutorial to rebuild my retail HD as I had a softmod gone wrong and didnt backup my eeprom (stupid me)
The problem is I have an error code 6 instead of a 12 so I cant proceed with your tutorial at this stage.
Can you tell me what to do to overcome this?
PS I have another xbox to use which has a mod chip in it (both xboxes are v1.6). I dont know if this will help.
Thanks.

Ask and you shall receive. There's a link in my signature to download my cheater C. Just download that and replace your C with mine.
Ways to do this:
-replace C folder contents via ftp
-hotswap and replace C folder contents via xplorer360
-use to build a new hdd with xbox hdm

Just unplug your dvd drive IDE connection and it will throw a error 12. The guy 4 posts before yours figured this out. All you have to do is read.

I know I said I was stupid but Im not completely stupid!
I did follow instructions and unplug the DVD IDE cable, but with the HDD IDE cable plugged in, it still gives me an error code 6.
Obviously error code 6 has precendence over error code 12.
So Im still after a solution. Can anyone help?

Sorry viper, most of the time questions like that are answered in the same post. Did you search afterdawn for xbox error codes? it will bring you to this thread. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210562
Quote:
6 - kernel - Cannot unlock HDD
If you understand the above, you should be able to understand what this means. It means you are trying to boot up the xbox with an harddisk that is locked in combination with ANOTHER motherboard than you are using it with right now.
So it looks like your hard drive is locked with a diffrent eeprom. There's really only one way this can happen and if you didn't switch out your hard drive more than likely the hard drive is bad or you turned off the power of the xbox when the ide cable wasn't plugged into the hard drive. Pretty much the only thing you can do is make a eeprom reader and try to unlock your stock drive or format a new hard drive to use in your xbox.
Here's the link for you http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/357863
I link so many people to this thread it's amazing. It really works and it's not very difficult at all. This will for sure solve your problem if you follow the steps.
Good luck and let us know how it worked out in the eeprom reader thread.

Thanks C4RN1.
Yes, I did read the thread about error codes - very useful!
So an eeprom reader huh? Man, it must be serious!!
I was hoping to unlock my hard drive using this method:
http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/6.htm
Then use xboxhdm to rebuild the drive. Is this an option you think?
If not, I will attempt the eeprom reader.

If the drive is unlocked it only needs to be locked.
But
If the hard drive is locked you can not unlock it.
SO if i were you i'd build the eeprom reader and build a xboxhdm disc.
This way you're not messing with another xbox and it will 100% work. There's not many risks using an eeprom reader. And the other way hotswaping with a different xbox, you could have two broken xbox's easily.
Tell me how it works out, it's fairly simple.

So I have unlocked my drive with HDDunlock, and have successfully rebuilt it with xboxhdm (thanks for the tutorial!) but the drive is still unlocked (which is why I am getting an error code 5)
You say above if it is unlocked it only needs to be locked...can this be done via the tools in xboxhdm? Or is there another way?
I thought the tutorial was for those people without an eeprom file, or have I done something worse?

When you built your xbox hdm cd you should have included the eeprom.bin file in the eeprom folder.
If you did all you have to do is boot option 3. type "lockhd", then type "lockhd -a" and it will lock. Then just throw your hard drive back in the xbox and you're good to go.
If this doesn't work how exactly did you unlock your hard drive?

I used "hddunlock" program to unlock the hard drive (paid $5) which worked well.
I then used xboxhdm to create hard drive from scratch. But my CD didnt have the eeprom.bin file in the eeprom folder.
This why I am confused. It states at the beginning of the tutorial that this is for people without an eeprom file.
In any case Im gearing up to build an eeprom reader. I'll let you know how it goes!

I see why you got confused, let me explain.
when using a hotswap procedure your xbox has to be able to lock and unlock the hard drive. First you unlock your hard drive when the xbox starts up and induce the error 12. You cannot do this since your hard drive could not be unlocked. Now you unlocked your hard drive using a different program (probably a force unlocker) and now you want to relock your hard drive. The only way to do this is to make a eeprom reader, and use the eeprom to lock your hard drive.
If your xbox wasn't locking and unlocking the hard drive you can not hotswap. I didn't realize you were in the wrong section. A hotswap will fix all software errors. Locking and unlocking is not one of those errors.
Sorry
I know for a fact the eeprom reader will work and you'll have a working xbox shortly after you lock your hd with your eeprom. There are a lot of us that have made the eeprom reader so if you get stuck or have any problems let us know.

Thanks for clearing that up..it all makes sense now!
Ive learnt so much about xboxes in the last week!
The only question I have about the eeprom reader is, what do you find is the best way to temporarily fix the wires of the reader to the eeprom chip?

Oh and I have another question:
I'd like to make my iso boot CD with the softmod on there.
Can I simply replace all the files in the C and E folders with the Ndures files, then create the CD?

Just tin your 3 wires and tack them on to the points, it doesn't need to be neat, just functional. Only use a low wattage iron, i use radioshacks 15 watt and it works nicely for everything i do.

Funny you should mention that, in my signature there is a link for my cheater c. If you click that it will bring you to a place to download. These files will make your xbox start up with avalaunch and have a working ms dash and all other options. If you were to use any other files just make sure they're working and what you want.
yes, just replace the C folder with my cheater c and you'll be good to go. I have over 20 people on here using that c and probably 50 more xbox's i modded. I'd like to say it's an idiot proof way to mod...don't want to knock you down or anything.
Let me know how it turns out, you're getting closer to a working modded xbox.
I'm going to radioshack to pick up some desoldering braid to replace this xbox 360 laser. I'll check back later if you have any questions.

It worked!
I cant believe it, after all the troubles I had with this I thought I was screwed.
The eeprom reader saved me.
I had a bit of trouble with the power on the xbox, I got a flashing orange light then it would shutdown after 10 seconds. but I managed to do a read of the eeprom during those 10 seconds.
Burnt the CD with the modded C drive, used xboxhdm to transfer the files and lock the hard drive...and its all good!
I cant thank you enough. You guys are the best.
Hope this helps other people who read this post too.
Thanks again.

Hi ! i have a small problem. Im fairly new at modding my xbox . And i keep getting the
"Linux CD not Found ! Insert it and try again..."
1) I want to start from the beginning... i think i did every software right. extracted xboxhdm v1.9 ...
2)extracted the ndure , ran the ndure 3 setup and saved it to xboxhdm linux folder
3)downloaded the updated script for ndure (edited the name and taken out the .htm) and placed it on the ndure folder under linux inside xboxhdm
4) double clicked on made-iso-win-bat.....followed the screen
and made a linux.iso (about 409.57mb)
5)burned imaged to disk using nero ...
Now , the problem now is im not sure if im doing this hardware part right....
1) pc is off ... unplugged the ide from pc hdd and set up cd/dvd to boot ...
2) power on xbox with ide from cd drive is unplugged causing error 12...
3) after error 12 shows , i plug in pc ide to xbox hdd ... ( in pc, i wait until i get to the screen where it says: type xboxhdm, xbrowser, etc.... or else it won't load on main screen on 1 - 4 vga option)
4)i tried typing xboxhdm / xbrowser . I wait for about few minutes for it to load... From the Looking for CD-ROM ... it says
/dev/hdr on /xboxhdm failed: No such device....
At the very end result it says :
"Linux CD not found ! Insert it and try again !"
Well any help would be appreciated ! I tried to explain my steps as clear as possible :) Thanks very much in advance !

Oh btw, i put every cable back to its place... and i accidentally left my linux cd in comp ... i tried and see if it would read the cd and it works... i boot up the comp, read the cd info right and almost instantly ... even on xboxhd / xbrowser .... by saying it found a hdd... etc...
does the xbox's hdd might be at fault ?

Hi Jannie01,
make sure your xbox hard drive has the jumper set to master. The default location is cable select. You need to change it.
Then xboxhdm should recognise the hard drive.
Once completed, remember to change the jumper back!
Let me know how you go.

yeah i tried that and still didn't work, i tried to have the jumper set at master with slave (middle) or take the jumper off for master or single...
If its alright , would u kindly tell me how u do it step by step ? like from boot up of xbox/pc and when to take off cable and plug it in .... if u don't want to that's alright, im about to close up the case again and leave it be. There's always other stuff to keep me busy lol. Thanks for replying viper !
