OK this is what I did:
I followed the tutorial exactly as on page 1 of this thread with the following exceptions:

For the "C" folder, I used the cheater C files in C4RN1's post above.

Next I got my eeprom file and put it in the eeprom folder. This is critical. I had to build an eeprom reader to do this, as my hard drive was locked and i had no access to it. If you dont have this file then Im not sure what you can do. If you do, put it in the eeprom folder.

Next burn the iso image to disk.

Hardware.
OK this is where it is a bit different.
I was able to connect my xbox hard drive to my PC before I turned the PC on (ie, dont boot up the xbox with the hard drive in it to get the error 12 signal) Just take out the hard drive from the xbox and plug it into your pc (so only the dvd and xbox hard drive is connected, oh yeah and the xbox hard drive jumper is set to master)
Now turn on the PC. (Make sure your bios is set up to boot from CD after it tries to boot from hard drive)
Some people have commented that their computer may not recognise the hard drive this way, so they have to do a hotswap (have the pc hard drive connected first to boot, press pause/break on your keyboard, swap pc hard drive for xbox hard drive, and resume)
I did not have to do this on my pc, but see how you go.

You should now see the main screen for xboxhdm.
First press 3 to unlock hard drive.
At the prompt, type "unlockhd -a"
This will unlock the hd with the eeprom file
now type "reboot"
as before wait for the main screen, then choose option 1 to rebuild from scratch.
Follow the prompts as required. It should install all the necessary files from your iso image
When finished, type reboot again.
Wait for the main screen, then choose option 3 again.
At the prompt, type "lockhd -a" This will lock the hard drive with your eeprom file.
Thats it. you should be done. plug everything back in and your xbox should boot up with avalaunch dashboard.
Try this and let me know how you go.

It's a lot easier with a eeprom file, though people doing the hot swap don't have that file. That's why they do the hotswap, so the xbox unlocks the drive then you can access it with your computer.

Jannie if i were you i would try to use xplorer 360. You won't get the linux error because you'll be running windows. Just make sure you have your operating system hard drive on the primary master and the xbox's hard drive on the secondary master.

Try this, it's the hotswap with xplorer 360 method i used, and it worked the very first time.

Quote:
HERE IS THE SUMMARY OF HOTSWAP WITH XPLORER360:

FOR Xplorer360, you need to know what is primary and secondary IDE cable on PC. So the PC's hdd is usually on the primary ide cable. Leave this IDE cable ALONE.

The other IDE cable is secondary. Remove all devices so this ide cable just connect to motherboard and the other end will connect to xbox's hdd.

Also check jumper on xbox's hdd. Make sure it set to Cable Select OR Master. turn on xbox and time when xbox goes to error screen or service screen. Now you are ready to do hotswap.

-start with xbox and pc off
-turn on PC and hit Pause/break key. PC should stop loading. If your pc can't stop loading then logon windows. You can hotswap in both cases (hit pause/break OR logon the windows first)
-turn on xbox (You can try both: without game OR with a game inside dvd drive). Disconnect ide cable of xbox's hdd JUST few seconds BEFORE xbox goes to service screen/error. Also watch the LED. it should stay green at the time you disconnect ide cable.
-connect xbox's hdd to PC
-hit any key on PC to continue boot up to windows. If you are already in windows then ok. PC boots normally and act normally, if not hotswap will not work.
- goto Manger and scan for a new drive. You should see xbox's hdd.
-open up xplorer360 and read the xbox's hdd
-if you can't read the hdd, turn off pc and connect xbox's hdd back to xbox. Then turn off xbox.
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/332766

The only thing i would change in the quote is instead of praying for the drive to be unlocked just induce error 12 as instructed to in the begining of this thread.

You will be able to read/write to the hdd so you can fix any errors. When you're done shut down the computer and then plug your xbox's ide cable back into the xbox and turn it off. Before you turn off the xbox you need to make sure the cable is plugged in.

If you have any problems let me know

Check your eeprom.bin file with live info to see if it's corrupt. I've helped someone with the same problem and it turned out the eeprom was corrupt and just needed to be re-backedup.

I can't get the iso making program to make the iso.

I run the bat, nothing happens.

First I tried this by copying over a softmodded xbox set up to the C and E folders and do it that way so I would have softmod.. but that didnt work. Then I grabbed the files on the first page so I was essentially doing a completely clean install (with my eeprom and without it) and both of those the iso maker did nothing.

Is there anyone who has a iso of the clean dash files and empty E drive and empty eeprom that can host the iso somewhere so I can dl it?
www.yousendit.com maybe? Ive tried 2 different downloads of hdm (including one in first post) and neither of the make iso win batches do anything.

Ok in my linux/isolinux/ folder, there is no file called boot.cat

it is a parameter for mkisofs. Ive downloaded the 1.9 from xbins, some other place, and xbox scene and every one of those files has not included linx/isolinux/boot.cat

is this my issue?

Thank you C4N1, I'll give it a try. I guess the primary master setting for the cd drive should be done via bios setup and the ide xbox hd via jumpers right?

Hey I don't know much about this kind of thing and I have not even modded yet, but I was wondering if I could just install a brand new hard drive using this method. and if so would I have to worry about lock or unlock since I don't plan on ever using xbox live. and also if I could transfer the files for an audio or text exploit while I am doing this.(audio or text because I cant seem to get my hands on one of the games) also since its a new hard drive would I have to hot swap it or could I just format it fully plugged into the computer (power and ribbon cable) and then put it directly into the xbox. and have it run. great tutorial, sorry im a noob.

blah blah blah

Hi, you all folks....here is my story.

I have 2 xbox (classics and modded already). one of them does not power on and the other one give an error number 07, so, i decided make one working xbox with those two broken xbox, so i took the hdd from the one that cant power on and moved to the other one that does power on with error 07. now the one with the good hdd that can power on give an error 06, I dont have an eeprom of any of two xboxes, 'cause the first one dont power on and the second one the hdd is broken, so I cant get the eeprom of any, here are my question....

1.- a brand new hdd will need the famous eeprom to enables it to use it in my xbox.?

2.- Or someone knows how to solve this issue

Thanx in advance

P.D. where the eeprom is located in the xbox hdd assumin that there is a file that store all this info ( i never make a backup of any xbox partitions C., E., F., etc)

read the eeprom from both of the motherboards. Unlock the hard drive from the old xbox with the eeprom from that board. And lock your hdd with the eeprom from the board you're using. It's pretty straight forward.

Way to be specific...twice. Yes post a picture of the error you're talking about and describe it to me. I can't read minds nor do i want to scroll up to see what someone else who already has had help has typed. The more information you give me the better i'm able to help you.

The first 2 posts just didn't cut it so...try again.

First of all thanks Chunkhead and C4RN1 - some excellent posts on here! Followed through the original tutorial and after a couple of false starts - didnt read the steps properly - I managed to get things working!

Also managed to use C4RN1's cheat files to get my Xbox booting to Avalaunch in the same way mentioned in the tutorial!

What I was wondering though - is there a way to use this same method to make XBMC the default dashboard?

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere.

Yeah here's the thread for that

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/376141

Pretty much all you're doing is making the default.xbe that the xbox loads on startup, point to the one located in the dash that you want to launch.
Example: E:/apps/xbmc

It's pretty straight forward, just make sure to backup all of your files and leave an exploit in your saved games so you have a way back in incase anything goes wrong.

Hope somebody can help - looks like some superb support on this forum.

I have softmodded my Xbox fine, and am attempting to upgrade the stock HD to a nice 250Gb I have lying around. Used xboxhdm, made the iso and ensured the eprom file was correctly copied, and booted up from the DVD - all fine.

Went through the build of the new drive, including the new F partition and this (eventually) finished.

However on reboot I seem to be unable to lock the the new HD. Using either option 3 (linux unlock) or option 4 (DOS unlock) results in a freeze Loadling isolinux/lockHD etc.

Repeated this with another HD - same issue. Have tried both drives back in the Xbox with the enevitable 05 error (HD not locked)

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance y'all!
