If you are looking for the ultimate muxer for PS3 High Definition video content, then tsMuxeR is a fantastic piece of software for creating PS3 compatible (or stand alone Blu-ray player) HD files.

This application is a must have for any PS3 owner.

Description: tsMuxeR is a transport stream muxer, creating files that are compatible with the PS3 and stand alone Blu-ray players. Input formats are listed as below.

I don't have a PS3, but the link to the program that lets you change the profile level was a major help for getting stuff to play on my 360. One question, did you guys get subtitle support with your MP4s?

The link I provided was for tsmuxer.

I am a little confused about how changing the profile in tsmuxer helped as I said that the profile level changer was buggy... You should use h264info for that.

To mux subtitles into a mp4 container is quite easy but my post relates to the m2ts (blu-ray) container playable on the PS3, not mp4.

Can you tell me exactly what it is you want to achieve and I'll happily help... What are the video, audio, subtitle stream formats that you want to create a file from?

No problem, as I said I am more than happy to help so let's work through this together. I am confident with all my experimentation that I can get almost any combination of video/audio streams to play on the PS3.

I have some questions for you which will enable me to help you...

What was the original container? avi, mp4, mpg, mkv?

How did you extract the streams from that container?

So you must have an AVC/h264 stream extracted and you ran it through h264info to change the profile level. Excuse me to ask a dumb question but you did type 4.1 in the level box on h264info, right?

Audio... You say the resulting file is dolby, is that what you started with?

If you can give me more information, even better! Things like resolution, framerate, bitrate, etc.

I have bean using ffmpeg to mux vob files for the ps3 and it works great.
-----
ffmpeg -r 23.976 -f h264 -i video_with_level41.h264 -f ac3 -i audio.ac3 -vcodec copy -acodec copy -bufsize 14745 output.vob
-----

But I haven't found any way to mux subtitles in the vob file. Could you do this with tsMuxeR? How?

Or should I look for a tool to make mp4 files instead? (Can I have ac3 in an mp4 file for the ps3?)

tsMuxeR deosn't output VOB, it outputs ts or m2ts. Subtitle support is coming soon!

I just found another great little application, which may include subtitle support. It's not freeware though, it is Elecard XMuxer Pro. It has remux, demux and muxing options. It seems to support most elementary streams, program/transport streams, mp4, avi etc. I am going to experiment with it over the next few days. If I find it has subtitle support. I will post my findings here...

I haven't found a way to mux h264 with ac3 into a mp4 container yet but I know it's possible and that is what fires me up to find an answer! lol... The reason I know it's possible is because if you use Nero Vision and output with the blu-ray video template, it creates a video file in the mp4 container with AVC and 5.1 dolby digital!

Thanks a lot in advance Ryu.

Here we Go:

It's a 720 HD file in MKV. It's a large file (almost 5GB) I know that I must split it, but first i need to have it in a format suitable for the PS3 right?

Resolution 1280X720, framerate: 29.97, bitrate:384 kbps (AC3)

Your "dumb" question wasn't that, but i did that as you mentioned.

I took the mkv file, opened tsmuxer, it shows me the 2 tracks (H.264 and AC3). Choose the output (i did it with both, TS and MTS), start muxing.
It saves me a new file (.mts or .ts) run on it h264info (with 4.1level)

I tried with my flash drive, hdd, Ipod. with all the resulting files wit no success.

I guess I missing this "How did you extract the streams from that container?"

Thanks again for taking your time.

Ken.
(je je je, just kidding I always prefered Ken rather than Ryu, but both had their unique technique)

PD By the way. I don't know how I got to that thread, but I could see the picture of your living room, impressive.

godofnec, the thing that's a little hard to understand is that you said you ran it through h264info as a ts/m2ts but... h264info is designed to load a h264 stream in it's raw form (ie: after it is demuxed).

This is a step by step of what you need to do...

1) Open up the mkv file in MKV Extract GUI (you will need to download MKV Extract GUI and MKV toolnix here... http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_...vextractgui.cfm and here http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_.../mkvtoolnix.cfm
2) Extract the streams using MKV Extract GUI
3) Run the raw h264 through h264info tool and change profile level to 4.1 (if you need to download this tool, here it is http://www.digital-digest.com/software/H264info.html )
4) Load the NEW h264 file and the ac3 file into tsMuxeR, save it as m2ts... and all should be good for your PS3 to play it. :-D

If any of these steps are a little hard to understand, just let me know and I'll break it down further.

I meant h264info. I'd gone through hell remuxing MKVs to MP4 only to have the audio play. With that program I can now get all my h.264 video to play.

For subtitles, I was asking if the PS3 supports subtitles in MP4? I'm pretty sure that the 360 can't read .vob files and I know for fact when didn't get subtitles in our MP4. Nor multiple audio tracks and 5.1 AAC actually stops the file from loading... I think on the PS3 it just downmixes it to stereo but still plays it.

IT WORKED!!!!!!
I did it with a small file.
Now comes the big test, the 5 GB file. Then, trying to split it. I don't know if the PS3 would have problems as if were a DivX file, but my external HDD has FAT 32 format and doesn't allow files bigger than 2 GB.

What do you suggest? split de MKV file or the MTS2 file.
Thanks again for all your help.

It's totally up to you. I too was faced with a similar problem. The original mkv file was 4.35gb, perfect for a DVD5. After the conversion I got 4.62gb.

I just burnt it onto a dual layer DVD (DVD9) and then copied it onto the PS3 hard drive for 2 reasons 1) Less wear and tear on the laser 2) It improves fast forward and rewind seek times when playing from the hard drive.

It's not the FAT32 partition that limits the files to 2gb, the limit there is 4gb. It is the PS3 that has set that limit for DivX and wmv files.

If you are going to split it, I would probably use MKVmerge GUI (this is part of the MKVtoolnix package I referred you to earlier) to split the Matroska file. If you click on the global tab, there is an option to enable splitting.

atomicxl, I am pretty sure that the PS3 doesn't support subtitles in a mp4 container.

The thing that I find extremely annoying too is that it supports SP profile mpeg4 video and AVC video in a mp4 container but not ASP level 5 video (DivX/XviD) in the mp4 container.

I can not see the logic in this as the decoder is obviously present in the PS3 as the DivX decoder, why can't the PS3 just use that? Grrrr...

I don't really care about the entire feature set for ASP like qpel, GMC etc. but it should at least be able to handle b-frames. As I said this is included in all the DivX profiles so I can not see any reason why this was excluded for the mp4 container format.

There are obviously some licensing issues and I get the feeling that they are trying to reduce the risk of HD material being ripped and played on the PS3, which gives precedence to the 2gb limit seen on DivX and wmv files. I really hope this is changed with a future firmware upgrade.

A solution to your subtitle problem could be to hardcode the subs into the video but that will mean you can not turn them off as they will be encoded into the video stream. If you need any help on how to do that, I will gladly assist. :-D

I'm happy to hear that it worked out for you!

I always preferred Ryu because he is more traditional style Karate. I'll always reminisce on those good old street fighter days!

Did you know Ryu in Japanese means Dragon?

Hi Ryu77,

I did as you said but can't seem to get the files to work on my PS3. I have audio, but no video. When I try them on my computer, they seem to work perfectly fine (using VLC).

I did exactly as you suggested, the only thing different/in addition that I did was use HDBDSplitGUI to split the m2ts into 2GB ea and then copy them onto my HDD. Any suggestions as to what I may be doing wrong?

Thanks!

zr123, What type of video stream are you working with? Is it AVC/h264?

I have never used HDBDSplitGUI, but I am getting the feeling that this could be the problem.

Are you working with a source mkv container or something else? If you are, you could try splitting the mkv file first with MKVmerge GUI as I suggested to godofnec. Then follow the steps for each split.

Ryu77,

It was an MKV file. I'll try to do it all over again and split the MKV files first. Should there be any particular settings I should be using with H264info, ie: add 3:2 pulldown, output frames, aspect ratio, etc, etc?

Thanks again!

Ryu77,

Just wanted to give you an update.

I tried everything again, including splitting the MKV file using the program you suggested, but the result is still the same. I get audio but no video.

I'm not sure what I might be doing wrong?

Any ideas?

Thanks again!

zr123,could you open up the mkv file in MKVinfo GUI (MKVtoolnix) and copy and paste ALL of it onto a Private Message for me?

At this point I can't understand what's wrong. You would only need to perform inverse 3:2 pulldown if you wanted to change the source frame rate from 29.976 (pulldown) to 23.976 (progressive) but I'm not sure if that is the problem. Hopefully MKVinfo can give me some insight to what could be the problem.
