Hey guys, i have a question about getting proper audio on my friends ps3 when playing a file that has DTS audio. Basically, i start out with a mkv with DTS 5.1, and i remux(split into 4GB parts) via mkv2vob(mkv2vob does the DTS trick to make it work with ps3). I save the resulting MPG file to an external hdd, and then plug into ps3 via usb...and the file plays fine w/DTS 5.1 audio. I have my ps3 hooked up to my audio receiver with an optical audio cable.
Here's my problem...i want to save the movie(MPG file) to a flash/thumb drive and then give it to my friend so he can watch the movie on his ps3. I did this, but my friend says that the audio is messed up(all he can hear is static and crackling). He just recently bought his ps3(firmware 3.21), but he has it hooked up directly to his sdtv via the supplied ps3 composite audio cable. I don't know if that has anything to do with it not working on his or not, but it works fine on mine. Does anyone know why it doesn't work on his ps3, when it works fine on mine?
Ryu or Odin...i really hope you guys are still around. You guys have always been my go-to-guys in this thread for any troubleshooting.

your file is still dts. Even though you used mkv2vob you must have not checked the always transcode dts box.

I guess your vob file still contains the .dts audio track, so your friend's PS3 isn't able to decode it into a stereo output through the composite cable (who use it on a ps3 these days?! Video Quality is s*it!)
In you case, you use a digital audio cable, so the ps3 IS able to send the compressed .dts file through it, and you audio receiver has a decoder to play it correctly.
You need to convert the dts track to something the ps3 is able to convert in a stereo mix, like a .ac3.
Usually, when I have a mkv with dts audio (like some 720p movies) I extract the .dts, convert it to .ac3, and mux it again to the .264, in a m2ts file (but vob is ok too), so i can stream it to the ps3 with tversity or if it's smaller than 4 gb burn it on a dvd.

Hi Ryu.
important question.
I'm using TsMuxer but there is an issue with 1080p videos.
... black screen with audio.
what I found out is the following - it is something with reference frames
normaly 720p are using 4 ref frames (where there is no problem muxing) and 1080p have 16 ref frames what is according to found forum entryes the problem ... is it possible to change the ref frame count in TsMuxer?
or to otherwise solve the problem? ...
thanx in advance
Tom

hey guys i have a couple of movies that are 720p quality but from what ive heard 720p means 1280x720 and not 1280x544 and i cant seem to find a clear explanation on the net
i have been trying to add subtitles to this using mp4box and it does not work
i want to play this mp4 on the ps3 but keep the same quality it is and i really want subtitles for this
would this app be able to do that? if not can someone link me to a guide?
thanks

not if he converted the original mkv to another file format. the new mkv2vob has an option for patching the DTS track so it will play on the PS3. If you dont patch it with mkv2vob then you must let it convert to ac3 which is really dolby digital sound and is almost the same as DTS in my opinion.
If you still have the original mkv file you can run that back through mkv2vob and this time check the always transcode DTS, or make sure the mkv2vob is updated and it will auto patch the DTS track. Please note if the DTS track is patched it may only play on the PS3. My seagate go media player will not play DTS tracks from any of the files I allowed mkv2vob to patch the dts track on.

What size HDD does your PS3 have? I changed mine over to 640gig and use ps3mediaserver to copy files straight over to it. you can also just stream them from your pc, instead of copying them. is that an option for you?
a pack of 25 dual layer DVDs costs around $18 in Australia, surely they couldnt be much more anywhere else? I know single layer discs are super cheap, but i cant imagine them being the norm for much longer.
This is great forum for getting help to transform your movie files into the format you need, but i would try to sway you away from splitting your files, it would be a massive job.
MKV2VOB software will do it for you if you want to do it. good luck
the problem with the mkv2vob its that it doesnt put 2 audio tracks! tsmuxer splits the mkv file very fast 10-20 min max the problem is that it doesnt downconvert the dts ! and i dont lnow how to write on dvd5 because tsmuxer meke one avchd folder with 2 3 video file it not make the 3 avchd folders!
If you simply want to convert dts, or flac, or mp3 audio on an mkv use MKV2AC3.

Just started using the advantages of my PS3 by converting mkv's from my PC (using tsMuxeR) to a USB HDD on my PS3.
The majority of them (22) play fine on the PS3. However, there are 3 that have audio, but no video.
Here's the report from tsMuxeR Output for one of the "no video" conversions:
SmartLabs tsMuxeR. Version 1.10.6 http://www.smlabs.net
Decoding H264 stream (track 1): Profile: High@4.1 Resolution: 1280:544p Frame rate: 23.976
H.264 stream does not contain fps field. Muxing fps=23.976
H264 bitstream changed: insert nal unit delimiters
H264 bitstream changed: insert pict timing and buffering period SEI units
Decoding DTS stream (track 2): Bitrate: 1536Kbps Sample Rate: 48KHz Channels: 5.1
B-pyramid level 1 detected. Shift DTS to 2 frames
H264 bitstream changed: insert SPS/PPS units
Is there a way to convert this mkv to play properly on a PS3 USB HDD?
Thanks in advance....

Easy and Fast h264 .MKV to PS3 and XBOX 360 compatible MP4 and PS3 compatible M2TS/AC3 conversion. Recoding to Xvid, MPEG2 and compatible h264 (with hardcoded subtitles or to AVCHD with softsubs) is also supported. A new feature includes folder batch conversion of AVI files to PS3 compatible format. Uses ffmpeg, mkvtoolnix and mp4box. Requires Haali Media Splitter and AC3 Filter installed.
Tried GOTSent, with both MP4 & AVCHD outputs. Same problem. Audio fine, no video.
Anyone know what the issue is and how to resolve?
Thanks,
Marco_Guy

Its not working for me. I Use it as mentioned, but when I try it in the PS3 i get a corrupted file and not supported file.
Any suggestion?
I Use tsMuxeR and also h264 info, with my Ipod, USB flash drive, HDD, none with any result. (I noticed that the audio of the resulting file is dolby audio)
No problem, as I said I am more than happy to help so let's work through this together. I am confident with all my experimentation that I can get almost any combination of video/audio streams to play on the PS3.
I have some questions for you which will enable me to help you...
What was the original container? avi, mp4, mpg, mkv?
How did you extract the streams from that container?
So you must have an AVC/h264 stream extracted and you ran it through h264info to change the profile level. Excuse me to ask a dumb question but you did type 4.1 in the level box on h264info, right?
Audio... You say the resulting file is dolby, is that what you started with?
If you can give me more information, even better! Things like resolution, framerate, bitrate, etc.

Hi guys. Ive got my own problem here. In theory it should work, but i'm baffled on how to do it. I understand the basics if i had 8 episodes of a tv series and burn those avi as data and it loads fine on a compatible machine, but i can't seem to fathom out how to do it with tsmuxer and MKV.
What i want is the MKV to be converted into the m2ts which i know how to. What i dont want is one long 8 gig file of all 8 episodes in the stream folder.
In theory, i guess i would have to load each file separate, and rename them ep1, ep2 etc and them pop them all into the STREAM folder and then burn to disc.
I know you can split the files in the tab section on tsmuxer, but my files are already split into 1.9G files. I just want to convert all the files but not have 1 large file.
I just want to know if there is a much more easier solution
