I just checked the mkv2vob changelog and it seems they have addressed the FF/REW issue. This could now be a good option for PS3 compatible files with subs. Of course mkv2vob wont mux the subs. You need to use a VOB authoring program. The latest version also encodes to 640kbs rather then 384kbs... Duh! I don't know why that wasn't implemented in the first place. That was one of the major annoyances I found with it. Well, it's fixed now. :-D
I am about to give it a try... I'll post my results here.

Sighhh...
It looks like I'm back to having the same problems again.
I get audio but no video... I'm following the exact same steps and everything. Even using the same file that worked once, but not again.
Aside from the profile being 4.1, is anything else supposed to be selected or clicked in the H264info program?

Alrighty, so I've narrowed it down.
Something's going wrong when the files are being split using MKVMergeGUI. Am I supposed to be doing something in particular?

I just checked out HDBDSplitGUI which you said you were using before. All seems good. Files play no problem... So you can create the m2ts first and split it that way if you prefer. It's probably a lot easier. I am sorry to take you away from your original method.
It can be complicated to work out where the error lies when using a few different applications to compose the m2ts file.

There are so many applications coming out for the new HD formats, it's hard to work out which ones work best. I am spending a lot of time testing different applications and methods.
Also, I tried to use the mkv2vob then re-author in ReJig to add the sup subtitle. All seemed like it was going well and DVD folders were created. It played on PowerDVD (with a 4:3 aspect ratio, same problem I had before. I know this can be fixed though through some hex editing). Subtitles showed on track options but when I enabled them they didn't actually show, even though PowerDVD indicated that the subtitles were on... ? So I don't know what went wrong there.

No problemo!
"Write PPS Every Picture" in H264Info, do I unclick that?

Yes, you must have accidentally checked it. I would say that is where your problem lies... Leave all other fields blank except for the level change box.

It wont work. The avi container doesn't support switchable subtitles. Just a thought... What about the .divx container? Which is basically an extension of the avi standard allowing menus and subs etc. Does the PS3 support DivX ultra? I am going to look into this...
Ok, Im trying to make it happen two ways : I'm trying with a .divx container and with .mp4 container with subs. When I know something more, I'll post the results here.
Thankx

Oh Yes, you are 100% correct. I didn't think of that.
Originally posted by sukhvail: I have a problem with my mkv to mp4 conversion. I usually use mkv extract gui to extract the .h264 and audio streams. The biggest pain is that most videos are avc level 5.1 instead of 4.1 so i have to use h264 info to change the level. However, instead of just hex editing the file, it reconverts it which takes ages. So the question I have is: can I change the level without h264 info? I f@#king hate that program.
I don't have any problem with h264info. Yes, it takes a couple minutes but that is because it needs to create a duplicate of the file with the profile level changed.
I am sure that tsMuxeR will have the level change component sorted soon enough, meaning we can avoid using h264info altogether.
h264 info takes 10 hours for me just to change the level. What build are you using? btw, i don't think that its because my comp is that slow as it has a P4 @ 2.66ghz and 2gb of ddr2 ram.

I use alpha .13 included in mkv2vob and works fine (5 mins.)

OMFG i hate this program. I tried the one with mkv2vob and the length of time it takes doesn't change. One thing that i have noticed is that the time frame is set to 500000. Is there any way to change that?
UPDATE: I downloaded the newest build of h264info.exe(.18) and its going considerably faster. So if anyone has the same prob as me, try the newest build found HERE

Ryu77,
Sorry to keep bothering you! But I'm going to need your help yet again!
I tried another movie file (MKV) and I get the exact same problem AGAIN! Only audio... no video at all.
I followed the exact same steps and tried it 3 times, but no luck. The files show up on the PS3 perfectly fine, but when I try to play them, something is wrong.
What should I try? I'm using a computer with Vista, should I try using my Laptop instead? Would that make a difference?
Almost about to give up on this thing... although I did manage to get it to work once, and then I have no idea what happened. :(

Here's another update:
I tried the same process using my laptop and still no go.
Tried 3 different movie files! All .MKVs...
I'm using Vista, not sure if that would be a problem?

zr123, can you open up the mkv file in mkvinfo and copy all the information to a private message for me? There's a link right up the top of this page (under the "glossary" tab) that says "Compose a private message".

Hi,
The process works wonderful. Thanks. In numerous forms I've read the tsmuxer will support subtitles soon but until it does we have to hardcode the subtitles if we want to. How can I do that?

Do you know how to use AVIsynth? If yes, here is an example script to hardcode the subs...
DirectShowSource("D:\ExampleVideo.mkv",23.976)
loadplugin("D:\VSFilter.dll")
TextSub("D:\ExampleSubtitle.srt")
Of course you need to have the compatible Direct Show Codecs installed otherwise AVIsynth can't load the video.
If you need more help on this method or related software, just ask... :-D

Thanks a lot. I did not use AviSynth before but I can use your sample I guess. I just need to find out the framerate I guess. I will try this tonight and ask you if I can't do it :)

i use convertxtodvd to create vob files of mkv. but this takes a long time in most cases like 4 to 5 hours. i use dvd shrink to fit the files onto a single layer dvd but will it lose more quality doing so? or should i just use dvd9?

That way you are loosing quality present in the original mkv file (I think.. it depends if you have a 720p or 1080i mkv file or not...) use mkv2vob or tsMuxer instead (wich creates .vob and .ts files respectively) without loosing quality (without encoding, just
"unmux" and mux again in another container - vob or ts)

Sorry to but in to the conversation but I have a question. None of the exe programs listed at the beginning of this thread will recognize the mkv files I have. One thing I dod notice is the files I have are x264 (not h264). Is there a difference?
Thanks, Chris.

You don't need to be sorry. This forum is meant for anyone to join into the conversation. tsMuxeR should be able to open that mkv file. x264 is the name of a codec that produces h264 files, just like there is DivX and Xvid that make mpeg4 files. So it is the same.
When you try to open up the mkv file in tsMuxeR, what happens? Do you get an error message?

If it is a blu-ray rip, then it will likely be 23.976. If it isn't and you find that the frame rate is different, you will need to replace "23.976" in the AVIsynth script to the frame rate that corresponds to your video.

Nevermind, the error I was getting was in MKVectractGUI. I tried tsMuxeR and it converted a 4.5 gig file to mt2s in 3 minutes (holy cow). Was I supposed to change the level from 5.1 to 4.1?
Also, I tried making a AVCHD DVD from that converted file using Nero 7, it analyzed the file fine but then unexpectely crashed and could not continue?

Funny thing, I did a free software update for Nero 7 and that fixed it, the AVCHD disc is being created as I type.
Thanks for the help and the cool software Ryu, I've been looking for something to work with MKVs for a long while. I used to be just limited to whatever Nero was compatible with... which wasn't much.
BTW, I too used to prefer Ken when I played SF2... Guile was cool too.
