I find 25fps in GRiD unbearable, the lag makes the game twice as hard.

Maybe that's why I find it so hard :P
I don't really see lag, what is the game like when it lags??

Your inputs don't move the car instantly like they should, and the juddery makes the game confusing and gives me a headache.

hmm....
I don't notice that when I'm playing, even though my frame rate is what I mentioned above
Maybe it has something to do with the res :S, or settings (AA??)

AA doesn't really make much of a difference to the frame rate you accept, just what the frame rate is.

LMFAO, I think he was saying that just to defend his CRAP 9200M GS :P

Crysis is 'Playable' at 16fps in that sense of the word. You can play the game and finish it, but it's not nice, it's hard to aim and looks ugly running at that sort of frame rate. Other FPSs are made very difficult at that frame rate though, so they wouldn't be 'playable' like it.

Sam - that's what I thought - I'll make sure the 4870 I pick up is the 1 gig version.
Estuansis, the Widescreen Gaming Forum sounds like the place to be. I downloaded that aspect ratio fix - how do you make it work? I won't be using it until I get a 24" LCD. Hey, thanks for the input on 3850 usage - the one with 512mb is coming in the mail from ebay, and I have the p4 3.2. My screen right now is max 1600x1200. From what you're saying, it sounds like I could try to play Far Cry 2 before the new build - would you agree?
Originally posted by shaff: playable and sh!t have a thin line
Hahahaha - well put shaff. So, estuansis, will it be sh!t on my p4, or what do you think? (I already decided no way am I going to try crysis until the new build - I don't want to "ruin" the game by already going through it on a weak system - I want highest settings to get the graphic thrill you describe so well.) So on Far Cry 2, should I just wait, (until the new build) or just maybe cut back the res?
Originally posted by estuansis: Honestly, the first time I played FC2, I thought it looked like crap, was visually suffocating, and was poorly made. But after that fix was applied, I think it is one of the best looking and playing games to come out in a while. It's little flaws like that that can ruin a game
I'm glad you're on the case :D
But I am a little confused about that aspect ratio, or field of view fix. You recommended a 745kb fix - aspect.zip - on the first link on p66, and then a 12kb fix - FOV.zip - on the second link on p67. Would a person use both? If not, which one do you REALLY recommend? LOL

Far Cry 2 isn't as bad as Crysis, but it is still demanding. An HD3850 can play it, but on low detail. Do you really want that?

I honestly don't know how it would handle it. If you turn the settings to medium maybe, then an HD3850 is fairly capable in Far Cry 2. As long as you get over 25FPS average, it should play alright. Though I wouldn't expect much. Your processor barely meets the minimum requirements.
It would be cheaper in the long-run to go Core 2 Duo as soon as possible. They are very cheap. Does your board support them? Even a stripped down budget model would be much faster, not to mention almost any Core 2 Duo can break 3GHz with only a little effort...
Sorry to put it this way, but a Pentium 4 is seriously old and you shouldn't expect it to handle all these games even Core 2 Duo systems can struggle with.

The HD3450 will struggle terribly with Far Cry 2. It can actually be as demanding as Crysis in some bits.
You've had so many sweet builds in the past. Don't betray PC gaming for your Xbox :(

Just kidding lol.
All right you guys, Sam, Estuansis. I'm gonna put Far Cry 2 in the same box with Crysis with the label - "Don't touch until the new build dummy!" else I'll be charting 13-16 fps along with Shaff, Hahahahaha. Shaff I think your point was, that crossed the line from playable into sh!t!! :P

Far Cry 2 crashes (as in, less than half the fps of the 1GB version) a 512MB ATI card at top settings with AA. There are only two other games I know that do this, GRiD and Crysis (inc Warhead). On that basis, a 256MB card is really going to hold you back.

It's actually a good idea though. It helps newer users when conversing with us geeks :P
Man oh boy. I love Far Cry 2 a lot. It's much more aesthetically pleasing that Crysis, IMO. The gameplay is always fun if a bit repetitive because you can explore at your leisure. And there's a lot to explore.
Though, gameplay wise, I prefer Crysis due to vastly better AI and enemy troop placement. The ~4 square miles in Onslaught in the original Crysis is superior ro the 30 square miles in Far Cry 2. But Far Cry 2 runs a lot better and produces excellent visuals of its own. It definitely looks fantastic at all very high.

Yeah, despite Crysis' poor AA, I prefer its graphics to Far Cry 2 by a significant margin, FC2 is nowhere near impressive as Warhead, for example. However, I will give it the performance nod. 46fps versus 12 for Warhead at the same settings. That hurts. Also agreed on the AI, it doesn't seem that great in Far Cry 2.

Estuansis - did you find the hang glider ? When Dinc linked us to the Far Cry 2 trailers on the old thread, there was some kind of hang glider on a hill that you could fly all over the place with. For that 30 square kilo map that should be really fun!

Rough overview so far
Dead Space
Graphics: 9/10 - Superb, crisp textures, good lighting effects, but buggy AA perhaps? Detail levels not distinct enough
Sound: 10/10 - Creepy music, no glitching, rocking sound effects
Gameplay: 6.5/10 - Actual game plays very well, but controls are very stiff and sluggish, mouse sensitivity tends to vary wildly depending on the angle, also almost all Geforce owners get major input lag on the game too, especially on the menus. Game is fun to play, but this holds it back somewhat.
Replayability: Questionable - game seems lengthy and enjoyable, and suit is upgradeable, but it is in essence a single player game.
Stability: 10/10 - Not had a crash or encountered any bugs.
Performance: 10/10 - A game with excellent up to date graphics yet one that for the most part runs on 7 series GPUs and <2Ghz Dual cores. Performance is admirable maxed out at 2560 using any 10 series graphics card.
Overall: 88%
Far Cry 2
Graphics: 9/10 - Fantastic lighting, texturework, post-processing, but somehow the game lacks that 'real' look that games like COD4 and Crysis have, which really does detract from the experience
Sound: 6/10 - Unfortunately a Q4 2008 top title hasn't mastered vehicle sound effects at all, and I'm not entirely convinced about the gun sounds either.
Gameplay: 8.5/10 - Everything works and feels right, but it's just a bit TOO slow, especially multiplayer
Replayability: 8/10 - Multiplayer is all well and good, but lacking in modes.
Stability: 5/10 - Click somewhere in the menu where there isn't a dropdown box, and the game alt-tabs for no reason. Multiplayer occasionally glitches a player to be in the game but not in the player list or visible on screen, so "you have died" randomly appears out of nowhere and you fall to the ground. What? Shem's playing? But... - not impressed
Performance: 8/10 - Game looks good and is a quarter as demanding as Crysis, but its still much more demanding than Q4 2007's best, and is all that extra frame rate lag really justified for what it achieves?
Overall: 75%
