I doubt I'll have issues running out of memory. AFAIK, Nvidia is more prone to performance drops when running out of memory. Crossfire 4870s won't have an issue at 1920 x 1200. Maybe 2560 though.

i just started playing far cry 2 and it is great. i am playing at all high no aa or af at 1920x1200 with my 8800gt and q9550 and get an average of 40fps. the game does very well at using all 4 cores so that makes me happy. i cant wait to upgrade my video card so i can play all very high and maxed out.

how do you guys see how much video ram you are using. i used to use riva tuner but vidram.dll doesn't work under vista/server 2008.

Currently in the process of getting Far Cry 2. I'll have it after I get my paycheck cashed.

The huge map is for sure confirmed. 50km/sq sounds like an assload of fun! It's gonna be like all the best bits of Mercenaries, Crysis, and GTA all rolled up into one! NO SEPARATE LEVELS!!! FINALLY JUST ONE BIG MAP!!!!!! SANDBOX GAMEPLAY RETURNS!!!

Reviews are looking good for it too, so it shouldn't disappoint.

How do the Graphics Compare to Crysis? Worse? Better? Similar?

graphics are a little bit less but the game runs so much better than crysis. crysis was unplayable at 1920x1200 on medium for me and far cry ran great at high and at that resolution. i have not seen the very high settings though so it could look better than what i am playing at.

your first sentence makes no sense. lol. i do agree that crysis looks better but i prefer far cry because it runs so much better at higher settings.

Good to hear FC2 runs better than crysis, can't wait to play it

Just to point out, Warhead runs much smoother than Crysis, on my younger bro's pc (my old one) crysis at 1024x768, low ran at between 25-35 FPS, but warhead runs at 30-42 FPS at the same settings

I noticed that too about Warhead. The performance boost isn't huge, but the game feels generally better optimized all around.

EDIT:

Going to Gamestop to buy FC2 now. I'll be back soon!!!

First impressions on FC2...

The graphics are every bit as good as Crysis. It's not quite as visually stunning but this is due to it being less "busy" than Crysis. There is a bit less happening visually at any one time. Less dense foliage and less water/lighting effects due to a sparser type of environment overall.

It is graphically very similar to Crysis. All the models and textures are comparable. The engines look quite similar actually.

Having problems getting it to work with Crossfire. Maybe a patch or driver update is due?

A single 4870 can handle it smoothly all very high at 1920 x 1200 though. It actually defaults to all very high for me. Will report with benches once I get Crossfire working.... if it can be got working that is...

Also, the very high and ultra high settings(only on certain options) aren't a gigantic leap in visual detail. The games settings scale a bit more like Far Cry than Crysis. They do add noticeable effects but you don't lose any of the atmosphere when using high like you do with Crysis.

Will report back later with more. The gameplay is overall fun and the map is HUGE. It's a bit like Mercenaries or Stalker but is actually good.

amd does have a fix that increases performance of the game that you should download.

http://www.techpowerup.com/index.php?74071

so far i have been having alot of fun with the game. i bought a sniper rifle and am now having fun blowing peoples heads off at every guard station. the only thing that are bothering me is that it takes a long time to get to different sides of the map. like 10 min in a car from one end to another and thats if you dont run into enemies.

what do you guys think about dead space and fallout 3? are you guys going to get them?

I have them both.

I reported on Fallout 3 a few weeks back. It's VERY similar in Gameplay to Oblivion. The graphics are good, not stunning or anything. It's a fun game; lots of reading. A Blend of Bioshock and Oblivion.

Dead Space is also very good. It's very scary at times and the atmosphere that is set up is amazing. Definitely better on a console IMHO if you have a big screen TV and surround sound system. It's a very creative game and I personally like it better than Fallout 3. I know they aren't directly comparable but if I had to give them both ratings I would rate Dead Space higher.

Thanks for that :D

Newest drivers and the hotfix have shown a large improvement with Crossfire enabled. Maxed out at 1920 x 1200 w/ 4xAA is playable.

Again, benchmarks later. Must... play... Far Cry 2... so long in waiting too. 4 years...

Oh yeah. I plan on Dead Space whenever it comes out for PC... if it isn't already. IIRC, I was never too excited, but it looks awesome so it should be worth a try :)

That's right rich, the 4870X2 is the same as two 4870 1GB cards in crossfire, but with the internal bridge which still gives it a percent or two's edge. At 2560 with AA, and to some extent 1920 with AA in games like Warhead, there is a big difference between either of those combinations and the 512MB cards in CF.

You need the hotfix 8.10 driver to play Far Cry 2 with CF, it doesn't work with normal 8.10 as the game had no profile in that release.

We all acquired dead space yesterday, been playing it a little. Looks good, runs very well (90fps on my system at 2560x1600 all high), scary as hell.

So Far Cry 2 doesn't support widescreen natively. The resolutions are there but 1920 x 1200 just chops off the top and bottom of the screen and stretches the image.

After a visit to the Widescreen Gaming Forum, I have found a workaround that sets your aspect ratio correctly. Yay, no more motion sickness while driving :) It makes for a massive improvement to IQ and makes the game feel better all around. Give it a try all.

Far Cry 2 is sweet. All very high at 1920 x 1200 w/ 4xAA is seeing 40-60FPS in most situations. Far Cry 2 turns out to be A LOT like Stalker. I think it's much better though.

The graphics are very comparable to Crysis quality-wise. The textures aren't quite as brilliant and everything isn't so sharp. But the IQ is consistent so far and I have already been wowed several times by the lighting effects.

Don't get me wrong guys. This is still a pretty demanding game. My friend tried it with a 5000+ BE at 3GHz and a 9600GT. He plays all high at 1680 x 1050 and gets 30-40FPS. AFAIK, the differences for any settings above high are minor as is the performance impact. The game looks fantastic in general. Better than FEAR or HL2 but not quite Crysis. The performance is miles better than Crysis though.

Also, this game loves video memory. The 256MB HD3850 runs like crap while the 512MB one runs fairly well. Same with the HD4870. The 1GB one sees a large performance increase over the 512MB one.

The minimum cards to play this game at high settings at 1280 res or similar would probably be:

HD3850 512MB
8800GS 384MB

Very high at 1920 res or similar:

8800GT/GTS 512MB
HD4850

The official requirements:

Minimum requirements

* CPU:
Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz, Pentium D 2.66 Ghz
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ or better
* Video card:
NVIDIA 6800 or ATIX1650 or better
Shader Model 3 required
256 Mb of graphic memory
* Memory:
1 GB
* Media reader:
DVD-ROM
* Hard drive space:
~12 Gig or HD space. (tbd)

Recommended

* CPU:
Intel Core 2 Duo Family
AMD64 X2 5200+, AMD Phenom or better
* Video card:
NVIDIA 8600 GTS or better
ATIX1900 or better
512 Mb of graphic memory
* Memory:
2 GB
* Sound:
5.1 sound card recommended
* Media reader:
DVD-ROM

As far as I can tell, these are fairly accurate.

Had a quick go and it looks good, but I haven't upgraded to Catalyst 8.10 with Hotfix yet, still on 8.9, so no crossfire support for FarCry 2 yet, resulting in a frame rate of 25 at 2560x1600 UH with no AA, 16 with AA. Does appear to look very nice though.

Not really the point, the game renders at 1920x1200, but it's actually a cut down version of a render that should be larger, for instance 1920x1440.

It makes a big difference because the game actually CUTS OFF parts to make it widescreen.

I think Estuanisis said that the fix fixed that.
