Never had anything pop up at all while playing. It goes to the PS2 browser when there isn't a game, and once it loads, does the transition (it just doesn't say PlayStation 2 once it starts up).
I've never had any problems with backup PS2 games before, nor with original PS2 games. They work the exact same.
How difficult is it to open up the system - on a scale of 1 to 10, how likely is it that I'll completely ruin the PS2, 1 being Not At All, 10 being Guaranteed?
I'd really like to show you guys whatever is inside this PS2. Whereabouts in the guts of the thing should I be looking? Is there a chip that I should look for, and if so where (approximately) would I more than likely find it?
Thanks for the help so far!

I would say its pretty easy if u have a screw driver and a tiny philips screwdriver. be sure to touch something metal and stay away from static electric. Dont rub your feets on the floor...and dont open it on the carpets... if u d touch something metal. i havent killed anything with static yet and not too careful with it and it still works ok. When u opened it there will be a big green board( motherboard) on the back of it should be the chip with bunch of wires soldered. good luck!

modchip.com site shippping is really slow most of the time, but some people dont recieve their package. i like mod-chip.com because there fast and they will reship if broken, lost and mostly dont ask for sent back or if they do they mostly pay for it.

Alright...finally got my PS2 taken apart. There's a small chip with a bunch of blue wires (the board the chip is on is blue as well) TAPED to the board. The name on the chip is "Exilinx".
Does that help at all? I haven't reassembled my PS2 yet, just in case you need some more information about the chip/setup.
I'm kinda worried about the scotch tape that's holding this all down...that seems to be a fire hazard to me.
Again, thanks for all the help!

Did you just say that you're Mod chip is taped to the ps2?! What kind of mod service mod you get?
I had my PSX mod chip duct taped to the motherboard it was weird, but it still worked.

Yeah, the chip is covered by a couple pieces of scotch tape...it's wired to the motherboard, but seems to be held in place by a few pieces of tape.

I recommend you remove the pieces of tape and hot glue it to the motherboard, in the same orientation as it currently is.

Okay, I've been playing around with the PS2 browser, trying to see if that makes a difference in any way. My PS2 won't play original DVD movies, backups, or PS1 originals/backups. It WILL play audio CDs, and original/backup PS2 discs.
I checked the version information in the browser and (not knowing if it's important) wanted to post it here:
Console: SCPH-39001 (Diagnosis: OFF)
Browser: 1.20
CD Player: 1.20
PlayStation Driver: 1.10 (Disc Speed: STANDARD, Texture Mapping: STANDARD)
DVD Player: 2.12U
Now, like I said, I have no idea what these settings should be, or if these are completely off (should I change the disc speed to Fast and the Texture Mapping as well?). And what does the DIAGNOSIS option do, if anything?
I'm not sure if this is important to my previous issues, but I figured if you guys had as much info as possible, it might help somehow. Even if someone could explain these things to me, that would be great! Thanks!

Well, I finally got to the bottom of my problem. Thanks to everyone who gave me their opinions and advice.
Turns out that I needed to hold down the Reset button while loading a PSX or DVD to get it to boot the game/movie. Man, do I feel like a tool.
Thanks again guys.

That's true. Whilst the UK version of the silver slimline PS2 is an older model, I was referring to the North American Slimline PS2. Just trying to clear my own words up. :oP

also can sum1 tell me which mod chips requires you to tap reset button twice to boot up psx games? i dont know which mod chip i am running and i have to double tap reset twice to boot psx games. also there was a red sonic the hedgehog sticker on one of the screw tabs behind the ps2

Hello Everyone I am new to the ps2 world. My friends talked me into buying one and they all have modded units. I have version 12 and I would like to know what chip and software I need to play my games from a external hd or a backup. I dont want to have to deal with swapping disks or anything like that. PLease advise. I heard that there was a lot of knowledge in this forum. I should also tell you that I dont know of anybody in my area that puts them in.

Be careful with v12, they got so called bug, you need to apply fix on mainboard to not burn laser unit, how can i explain that, they got no limit on voltage to the laser, so if there is a problem with disc (scratched, bad media or something similar) electronic can raise voltage to get stronger laser and this can damage your laser unit, so be careful. If they have all of them modded, i'm almost sure they already applied that fix i've mentioned, but its always good idea to ask them.

i already knew bout that laser issue about v12. but thanks for the heads up anyways zygfryd. i never had any problems with the laser till now so mayb the modder already fixed it. however my laser doesnt seems to read bad media burned games. there was a game disc which was so bad in quality when i tried looking at the light through the disc i could actually see the outlines of the label and drawings on the cover of the disc. but that is normal right? every ps2 laser has issues with bad media.
anyways, wat i wanted to really know is which mod chip cud i be running. i have no idea which one it is. lol, the only thing i know bout it is that i have to double tap reset twice to play psx games. and also there was a sticker of a red sonic the hedgehog. so anyone on any info about such a mod chip pls help me out. i want to know what capabilities my mod chip has. thanks
