Thanks in advance!
I use WMP11 as my media server, when I enable Media Server on my PS3, it kicks the PC off of the internet when i turn the PS3 on for some reason. I keep the media server on the PS3 turned off unless i really want to use it. I dont know what the cause is but you may have the same problem.
Thanks, but its just not my computer that is connected to the router. I don't want to kick the computer off the network because my sister may be trying to do homework or something. I just want to try to get them to work together, harmonized.

i really need some help with my network settings to get mw2 workin! its driving me nuts..
i can get to the psn, i can browse the net..but when i run the connection test it says "failure" under the internet connection heading...even though i can browse the web?
anyhoo, i get into mw2 and it just sits on the "connecting to matchmaking" screen....does nothing lol
ill post the settings...
i have a motorolla modem (not sure of the model) going to a Netcomm NB600w wireless router..
my ps3 really hates the router..
i have the ps3 in DMZ i read it was good to do that?

if i disable UPnP, then do the connection test, everything is perfect, but in the time i go across to sign in, something happens and it says DNS error..i redo the test, and it comes up with DNS error, so i enable UPnP, and the same thing happens all over again, it seems no matter what i do, once it starts working, a few seconds later it doesnt.

i have had the exact same problem...and the second time i followed the steps i turned off the modem and router...switched it on, and still no luck :/

PUTTING YOUR PS3 IN A DMZ
Firstly you may be wondering what a DMZ is, this stands for a demilitarized zone. it really means that rather than opening just one port on your routers firewall you are actually opening every single one. Port opening is another simple process, however it takes a bit of time to find exactly what ports need opening, and sometimes, the ports listed may not solve the problem you have.
There is no risk regarding security/virus' etc when using this with the ps3, Your router will only send the traffic through to the DMZ that you have specified.
Putting your PS3 into a DMZ is not a bad thing, and is much easier than opening port for the reason listed above.
Now you may need to do this for some of the following reasons:
* Not being able to join rooms
* Not being able to speak over headset
* Not being able to hear over headset
* Not being able to join games which are hosted by certain people
* Any problems to do with connectivity to the PSN or game specific servers, especially if your computer will connect to the internet, but PS3 won't.
* Problems with media servers
Now on with the guide.
The Guide!
To put your PS3 into a DMZ (To be done on the PS3 Console)
Firstly, you will need to assign your PS3 a static internal Ip address. This means that everytime your PS3 connects or "talks" to your router, the router will assign it a different internal IP address. These IP addresses typically run in series. So for example, if your PS3 is the second device communicating with your router, then it will be assigned an ip address of 192.168.1.3. However, if you choose to use your PS3 without the computer being on, the assigned IP address your PS3 has will be 192.168.1.2. As this is different, and obviously will change, it would be stupid setting a DMZ up on one of the above Ip addresses, unless your PS3 was the only device that would ALWAYS connect using that specific IP.
To make sure that your PS3 is always assigned the same internal IP address by your router, you will need to go to the "Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Settings" option on the PS3 Cross bar menus.
You will be presented with an option which primarily asks whether you are using a Wired or Wireless connection. Obviously, you will choose the option which refers to you. If choosing the Wireless option you will need to input the security details in use on your router *If you are not currently using wireless security, i strongly reccommend you do so ASAP*
Both selections should show a page called "Address Settings". Here you will need to select "Custom". Another page will then display entitled "IP Address Setting". The option "Manual" will need to be selected.
This will display a page where customisable IP Addresses are available to be selected.
IP Address - This will need to have the Static IP address in it. Personally, i use 192.168.1.101. I use this because it is extremely unlikely my Router will ever automatically assign this IP Address to a device, as i will never have 100 other devices connected to the same system.
Subnet Mask - Is always set to 255.255.255.0
Default Router - Is the internal IP Address of your router.
To get the exact ip of your router you should go to
Start
Run
cmd [Hit Enter]
Type in ipconfig and hit enter, this should come up with all the ip addresses to do with your computer and the network. The address you will need to enter in this option is listed as "Default Gateway". There might be a few different networks depending on your computer specifications but your looking for the Ethernet adapter.
Primary DNS - Same IP Address as "Default Router"
Secondary DNS - Same IP Address as "Default Router"
After entering all of these IP Addresses, you will now click "Enter" or hit the "right" button on the D-Pad. This will take you to a screen which says "MTU" at the top.
If your router has the option to change the MTU size then use 1500 in bytes, this is to be done on both the PS3 and the router page.
If you cant change the MTU size then set this to automatic
The next steps are very simple. You do not want to use a proxy server unless you connect to the internet using one, however i can be of no help there, and you should enable UPnP if your router supports it. If you get errors when you test the connection later on, then turn this off and try again.
To put your PS3 into a DMZ (To be done on the PC)
Now head over to your PC, and load up your internet browser. In the Address Bar, (The place where you put WWW.) type the IP Address of your router (the one you found using the Command Prompt earlier under "default gateway")
This will take you to your Router Configuration Page.
There may be a security login page or popup. if you don't know the Username and password then Google your router for the default login, check on your router label or ring your ISP.
Every router interface differs from an other, and depending on what router firmware update you last installed, router interfaces can differ, even on the same model routers. This means that you will need to search the router config page yourself. You are looking for any mention of "DMZ" or "DMZ Host"
When you have found this, it will ask you generally to input the IP Address of your DMZ Host, which is just the static IP address you assigned to your PS3 earlier, my example was 192.168.1.101, so we'll stick with that. Then click "apply" or similar.
You should then turn off everything running on your home network. PS3, PC, Router etc. This is solely to make sure that the changes are applied as soon as possible.
This should fix all of the problems as listed earlier in this guide, and probably some other issues.
If you do need any help then when you post, along your with problem could your also give some more details. Like:
- Your Connection, ADSL or Cable.
- How you have your network setup.
- Your router Make and Model.
Why do you set the MTU to 1500? I used your guide and it worked great. But, I noticed that when I set the MTU to 1500 and ran the test connection it gave me a slower speed then when set to automatic. Is the slower speed better for the game play? Second, If I put ps3 in dmz do still need to do the port forwarding for MW2? Thanks in advance........Todd

Hello
I myself use my PS3 to play online games as do many. Now Over the years i have had my fair share of internet connection issues. So when I came across your guide it almost made me cry out of happiness. So I followed the guide step by step and ..fail (FOR ME.
It seems that even though my PS3 now has an static ip and has been put in a DMZ because i've changed my router settings. My NAT type2 still gives me a hell off a ride in online games.
I've also read about Quote: using 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3 as your DNS servers instead of the ones your home computers use
my question regarding that would be do i change these DNS server settings on my PS3, router, or pc ( i guess router or pc is the same, if it's not please say so. I'm not only trying to solve the problem but also really understand why any change would work)
AND also confirm if 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3 is exactly that what I should be entering

I've been able to connect to the internet using my ps3 and when i run a broadband test everything comesback fairly good but I cannot play any games online, it takes forever to load, or even to log in for that matter. I went through and followed the DMZ instructions and now it won't connect to the internet at all. I'm using a linksys WRT120N model router. I turned off my router and all things connected to it after and still nothing. When I run the connection test on the ps3 it fails on the obtail IP address portion and gives me "a connection error had occurred.(8013013d)" message..Help please.....oh yea I'm using WPA-PK.....dunno if it makes a difference....thanks
New update: I'm getting a new error message, i haven't changed anything but it says "the key information exchange has timed out. Your WPA key may be incorrect." but I've double and triple checked the key and it is correct...

I did the following in the procedure. I then kept getting NAT type failed and an error code 801107ff or something like that. I put in 4222 and 4223 as my dns primary and secondary. I then got NAt type 2. The test said i was restricted in game communication etc- And something with IP fragments. I then tried to play my Call of duty game. I still had a problem. My game kept saying it was getting match quality and never found a game for like 40 minutes. I did this because It said it would fix problems like this. It doesn't seem to. PLease help. My ps3 has been a bit fragile. sometimes connecting NAT 2 other times failing other times error. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED

I got the same thing. It would start up and when I was going to internet connection settings an error code would pop up. WHen I did th connection test the test would go fast until NAT type then it loads for a long time before saying NAT Type Failed. I don't know how to solve this, but I did put in DNS codes when redoing the settings. Go to custom when setting it up and when you get to dns codes select manual and make it look like this
Primary: 4.2.2.2
Secondary: 4.2.2.3
Then do the rest and test the connection. It should say NAT type 2 with a bar at the bottom saying the connection is bad etc. Other than this I don't know what to do either

ok, the reason i tried doing this is because i am constantly getting disconnected from the ea servers (FIFA 11 online) i can play a head to head match up till the 80th minute or so and 9 times out of 10 it quits, then comes up a message saying you have lost connection to the EA servers etc etc. I've emailed EA about it, they've tried helping me but nothings worked. I tried this DMZ thing, with the IP address etc but i've just tried playing a game now, and does same thing. 80th minute, winning 3-1 in head to head online match, get disconnected, i lose the match. It's really starting to p!$$ me off. I used to get the you have been signed out of playstation network, every 20 mins or so aswel, but that seems to be ok now. Can anybody please help with this EA thing. I'm really getting peeved off with it. Also when i do connection test everything is fine apart from UpNp: Not available. Its ticked in my Router settings, and used to say available before i tried this DMZ thing so i don't understand that either? Thank you

Any ideas on how to find my IPs?

Great guide, but I am still stuck in NAT 3. I have set my PS3 to a static IP, and reserved it on my DHCP. I then put that IP into the DMZ. I have UPnP enabled, and everything set up according to the guide. When I go to test my connection on the PS3 though, it still says NAT 3. Is there any other little trick I can do to get a good connection?

I'm pretty sure your only problem is that you have to have a wired (Ethernet) connection to change your router settings. So just plug your laptop into the router for the moment, then try entering the router's IP address in as the URL again.
I don't know what kind of router you have, and it's going to ask for a password ? these are preset, so Google what your user name/pass are for your specific brand of router (e.g., Linksys is usually left blank for user name, "admin" for password).
Oh, and in general, on a Mac, everything you need to know about your Internet connection is available under System Preferences > Network.

Now, then, since I've (hopefully) solved someone else's issue and (hopefully) therefore earned myself some karma, was wondering if anyone could help with my problem:
I've followed this guide to a T, except for one element: where it says to enter "same as Default Router IP" into the PS3 as Primary and Secondary DNS Addresses. This didn't work for me; the PS3 would say I had a DNS error.
So instead, I ran automatic setup on the PS3 and wrote down the numbers it'd come up with for DNS addresses, then went back and configured everything manually, assigning the PS3 a static IP and filling in those DNS numbers. Everything seemed to work fine ? for a while.
A couple other notes: I put the PS3 in a DMZ using the static IP I'd assigned it. UPnP disabled on both router and PS3. Media servers disabled on the PS3. On the router, I even limited network access to three MAC addresses: those of my laptop, the PS3 and my smartphone. My SSID is not being broadcast.
Things have gotten better, but I'm still having the problem I had originally (and which led me to this awesome forum). Which is that, when using Netflix on my PS3, the movie/show I'm watching will freeze, and then my entire wireless connection drops ? for everything ? PS3, laptop, phone.
Any other ideas here? My router is a Linksys WCG200, the model where the modem and router are integrated into one unit.
One other strange thing: Everything ran fine a couple weeks ago, no problems at all ? and this was before I'd learned anything about DMZ or static IPs. I was just going by the PS3's automatic configuration. I didn't even have password protection on my network, at the time. But then I moved the TV and PS3 to the other side of the room, taking the power strip with them. So my router is still on the other side of the room, plugged directly into the wall. That's the only difference between when it was working and now, when it's having these issues.

Update:
Tried adjusting settings slightly: I assigned a static IP outside of what the router webpage says is the range of addresses (it says it starts at 192.168.0.10 and goes through 192.168.0.254, so I assigned the PS3 the address of 192.168.0.3) and changed the DNS address to the following values:
Primary: 4.2.2.2
Secondary: 4.2.2.3
Everything seems hunky-dory so far: No dropouts, everything running great (PS3 apps, laptop, smartphone). I think statically assigning the PS3 an address outside the range prescribed by the router settings page might be the key. Not really sure why those DNS values work (or what they are, even; are those Verizon public addresses?), but FWIW ...

Linksys WRT54G
PS3
I set up my PS3 to have a static IP and I've put the PS3's IP address into DMZ on the router. I can access the internet and play Black Ops with it. I have turned off uPNP on PS3 and router.
It is reading as NAT 2 through the PS3 and Moderate NAT through Black Ops.
I had it set up and it was reading as an Open NAT, then I had to reset my router to its factory settings and since then I cannot get it to go back to having an open NAT on Black Ops.
Any suggestions?
