two different things. If using WIFI, you have to set it up proper to get a NAT Type 2. If you are getting a Nat Type 3, life will suck for you online.

I've followed all the steps so far, including the alternate DNS numbers. When I get to the test connection page on the PS3, it succeeds in "Obtain IP Address" and "Internet Connection" but when it gets to the "Playstation Network" it keeps failing (says connection with PS network timed out). Any suggestions?

Hello,

So I have been trying to play all of my friends in COD MW2 on the PS3 and I cannot connect with anyone in a game that I host or they host. My stepbrother set up the wireless internet in the house and is no longer around and I have no idea how to change any settings through the computer. All I can tell you is my UPnP is Available, My NAT type is 2, My default router is 10.100.1.1, primary DNS is 4.2.2.2 and my IP address is 10.100.1.189, Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0. I have no problem playing people around the world or getting on the PSN but when it comes to hosting a game with my close friends the game will not let me connect with them. Is there anything I am doing wrong or anything I can do to fix the problem. I am not really Network programming savvy so this is really frustrating me.

Thank you all for your time!

Just a little tip here for those of you having trouble getting NAT Type 2 with these instructions. While they're more than adequate they don't account for the fact that many users may be using a DSL/Cable modem that has a built in router, and then connecting another router to that one for wireless capabilities. This puts you in a double NAT situation, and you'll never get NAT Type 2 on your PS3.

If this is the case with your situation, you'll need remove your router from your network, put your modem in bridge mode, reinstall your router and then follow these instructions.
This must be my problem. Everything is working fine now, have played a few online games, but still in NAT 3. Can anyone explain how to put my modem in "bridge mode"? I have the router from my provider and then a linksys plugged into that.

So what everyone is saying is that since I have NAT type 2 on my PS3 the problem with me hosting a game with only my friends is not on my end because I should have no problem right?

The weird thing is When I go into my settings on the PS3 the NAT Type says Type 2, but when I put a game in (say Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2) the game itself will tell me my NAT Type: Strict. I don't understand how I am getting 2 different NAT Types and how I can go about fixing the problem.

Ok everyone I promise this is my last post. I found out that the router in my house is a Linksys WAP4400n which is a business router for my stepfather to set up a static IP for his emails. When I looked at the Set up portion of the router there is nothing for port forwarding or anything like that that I can change. My question to all of you is that is it feasible for me to get a 2nd router for just my ps3 and plug it into the same modem <==is this even possible? I am thinking that if this is possible that it would be the best/easiest way for me to go right now. Any Ideas?

It would be better for him to replace that router with a Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS. @$70

Edit: I looked at the manual and your's does not have a Gamming portion on it. That sucks. Someone may know more about DD-WRT that can be downloaded to it but that gets technical. Over my head.

Well, I tried this and I got connected to the internet on my PS3. Thing is, I was connected to the internet before as well.

The problem I'm having is with the media server. I used to be able to run a media server just fine but somewhere along the way everything went to hell.

I can get the media server to show up on my XMB, but whenever I try to go and play something I get a DLNA protocol error 2104. I've tried everything I can think of to fix it, but nothing has worked.

My ISP is Comcast, cable connection. The router I use is a Netgear WPN824v3. I have the cable coming from the wall to the modem, then out to the router, and from there I have one ethernet cable connection to my PC, and one to my PS3.

I've tried both wired and wireless connections on my PS3. Wired gives me the problem mentioned above, and wireless just plain doesn't work. For the Wireless side, I've tried changing the security types, the security key, etc, but it always fails to get the IP. I'd really rather have a wired connection anyway.

Anyone know of a way to help me out? It'd be much appreciated. I've been Googling for days but the solutions people have given haven't worked.

Your solution should be, "get a linksys router". Two of my friends also have problems with Netgear routers and their respective ps3's. I use the wrt54g. It allows you to open up your router with "DMZ" in the gaming and applications page. My connection is Nat2 and I have never been logged out since! Good luck. Any more questions feel free to PM me.

Got everything working correctly now--bridged my modem and now have NAT 2 working properly.

New problem: I don't know if this has anything to do with everything I've done to get my connection to work for online gaming, but now, I can't get netflix to work properly. If I followed all the above steps to get my router in the correct settings, would that effect my netflix operation?

Alright so I've been seeing many people on here with network/router problems so i decided to post this here.

PUTTING YOUR PS3 IN A DMZ

Firstly you may be wondering what a DMZ is, this stands for a demilitarized zone. it really means that rather than opening just one port on your routers firewall you are actually opening every single one. Port opening is another simple process, however it takes a bit of time to find exactly what ports need opening, and sometimes, the ports listed may not solve the problem you have.
There is no risk regarding security/virus' etc when using this with the ps3, Your router will only send the traffic through to the DMZ that you have specified.

Putting your PS3 into a DMZ is not a bad thing, and is much easier than opening port for the reason listed above.

Now you may need to do this for some of the following reasons:

* Not being able to join rooms
* Not being able to speak over headset
* Not being able to hear over headset
* Not being able to join games which are hosted by certain people
* Any problems to do with connectivity to the PSN or game specific servers, especially if your computer will connect to the internet, but PS3 won't.
* Problems with media servers

Now on with the guide.

The Guide!

To put your PS3 into a DMZ (To be done on the PS3 Console)

Firstly, you will need to assign your PS3 a static internal Ip address. This means that everytime your PS3 connects or "talks" to your router, the router will assign it a different internal IP address. These IP addresses typically run in series. So for example, if your PS3 is the second device communicating with your router, then it will be assigned an ip address of 192.168.1.3. However, if you choose to use your PS3 without the computer being on, the assigned IP address your PS3 has will be 192.168.1.2. As this is different, and obviously will change, it would be stupid setting a DMZ up on one of the above Ip addresses, unless your PS3 was the only device that would ALWAYS connect using that specific IP.

To make sure that your PS3 is always assigned the same internal IP address by your router, you will need to go to the "Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Settings" option on the PS3 Cross bar menus.

You will be presented with an option which primarily asks whether you are using a Wired or Wireless connection. Obviously, you will choose the option which refers to you. If choosing the Wireless option you will need to input the security details in use on your router *If you are not currently using wireless security, i strongly reccommend you do so ASAP*

Both selections should show a page called "Address Settings". Here you will need to select "Custom". Another page will then display entitled "IP Address Setting". The option "Manual" will need to be selected.

This will display a page where customisable IP Addresses are available to be selected.

IP Address - This will need to have the Static IP address in it. Personally, i use 192.168.1.101. I use this because it is extremely unlikely my Router will ever automatically assign this IP Address to a device, as i will never have 100 other devices connected to the same system.

Subnet Mask - Is always set to 255.255.255.0

Default Router - Is the internal IP Address of your router.
To get the exact ip of your router you should go to
Start
Run
cmd [Hit Enter]
Type in ipconfig and hit enter, this should come up with all the ip addresses to do with your computer and the network. The address you will need to enter in this option is listed as "Default Gateway". There might be a few different networks depending on your computer specifications but your looking for the Ethernet adapter.

Primary DNS - Same IP Address as "Default Router"

Secondary DNS - Same IP Address as "Default Router"

After entering all of these IP Addresses, you will now click "Enter" or hit the "right" button on the D-Pad. This will take you to a screen which says "MTU" at the top.
If your router has the option to change the MTU size then use 1500 in bytes, this is to be done on both the PS3 and the router page.
If you cant change the MTU size then set this to automatic

The next steps are very simple. You do not want to use a proxy server unless you connect to the internet using one, however i can be of no help there, and you should enable UPnP if your router supports it. If you get errors when you test the connection later on, then turn this off and try again.

To put your PS3 into a DMZ (To be done on the PC)

Now head over to your PC, and load up your internet browser. In the Address Bar, (The place where you put WWW.) type the IP Address of your router (the one you found using the Command Prompt earlier under "default gateway")

This will take you to your Router Configuration Page.
There may be a security login page or popup. if you don't know the Username and password then Google your router for the default login, check on your router label or ring your ISP.

Every router interface differs from an other, and depending on what router firmware update you last installed, router interfaces can differ, even on the same model routers. This means that you will need to search the router config page yourself. You are looking for any mention of "DMZ" or "DMZ Host"

When you have found this, it will ask you generally to input the IP Address of your DMZ Host, which is just the static IP address you assigned to your PS3 earlier, my example was 192.168.1.101, so we'll stick with that. Then click "apply" or similar.

You should then turn off everything running on your home network. PS3, PC, Router etc. This is solely to make sure that the changes are applied as soon as possible.

This should fix all of the problems as listed earlier in this guide, and probably some other issues.

If you do need any help then when you post, along your with problem could your also give some more details. Like:
- Your Connection, ADSL or Cable.
- How you have your network setup.
- Your router Make and Model.
I have followed all the ps3 instructions but on the pc settings i cannot find anything to do with DMZ??

i use wireless network on 'zyxel'

Hello everyone,

So I went out today and bought the Linksys wrt54g2 router and plugged it in to create a new network. I got the network set up and the only thing that is connected to my router is the PS3. So I created a Static IP and went into the router itself and configered the DMZ to enable it and open all the ports. When going into gameplay on COD Modern Warfare 2 It still tells me my NAT Type is Strict. How can that be if all my ports are open? I am starting to lose all my patience with this! Someone please help me!

I see that you have all ports open, you may want to try Port Forwarding as well. One other step that you can try it Port Forwarding does not solve your problem is Port Triggering. Port Triggering is easy as shown here http://forums.tutorialninjas.net/tutoria...pe-linksys.html
Try port forwarding first.

Great guide, I have no problems whatsoever playing on my PS3.

I am using a linksys WRT54GC v2.0 Compact Router.

My problem occurs when I try to play TWO playstation 3's connecting to the same router.

When trying to play Modern Warfare 2 one of them will never connect and always gets the message "trying to connect, matchmaking"

Whatever PS3 I switch on first works fine, its when you try to play the 2nd one for online gaming, the 2nd one will not connect.

I get NAT type 2 easily on both.

Both PS3 have their own Static IP addresses
192.168.1.105
192.168.1.110

Both PS3 work fine when you play them without loading the other one up.

It is only a conflict when you try to play the same game on both.

We can play different games and it works fine. example, she can play Modern Warfare 2 and I can online with Demon Souls or even Dragons Age or Pro evo 2010.

It's when we BOTH try to play MODERN WARFARE 2.

Is anyone else getting this error?

We have 20mb broadband and everything else works fine.

Someone suggested it may be a lag/latency with trying to connect 2 PS3's. I find this hard to believe as it works when we play 2 different online game.

I have read afterdawn, yahoo answers, portforward.com and anything else that showed up on google. Most solutions are only for getting a NAT2 on a single PS3.

I have uPNP enabled on my router. I set up an internet connection on my PS3's and select "ENABLE". When the final screen shows up on settings the uPNP is always shown as DISABLED on the PS3. Does this matter? I have no idea how to fix this as I always choose to enable it.

Help?

Suggestions anyone?

Oh, and does anyone know the exact ports to forward on Modern Warfare 2 on playstation 3.

I suppose I could try first PS3 in a DMZ and the second PS3 with port forwarding.

Forgot to mention I am using DNS 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3

Check with MW2 what your NAT type is.
The ports needed for open nat is port range 3074 to 3075.

Once you have your router in a dmz you shouldn't have to use a static ip address. Just use the automatic settings and it should connect fine.

Im NAT type 2. It's fine. 2 is the best you can get through a router.

Single PS3 works fine.

TWO PS3's still do not work at same time.

Thanks for the port numbers.

Anyone any idea which PS3 to forward them to so that both work at the same time?

I've got a feeling the router is getting confused with 2 playstations trying to access same game at the same time, even though it's two different PS3's

My other PC's and laptops all work fine. My PS3's work fine on their own.

Bloody MW2 seems to be the only game that stops me playing both online. Well MW1 blocked me as well. Is it an anti-cheating thing because it recognises both MW2 games as the same IP address from the router?

Automatic settings are all well and good but you can only put ONE PS3 in a DMZ not both.

If you manually sign each PS3 a static ip, add a service to your router with said ports, call it what you wish (i called it PS3Nat) then in your routers firewall add to inbound section and input the two ip,s you created earlier, with this done you shouldnt have to place any of your PS3,s in the dmz.
