I was gonna start overclocking today , but my CPU fan isnt anywhere near up to scratch yet my friend says... (my cpu's temp is always between 70-74c, according to the temp diode), and i have good in case cooling! Whats a good CPU fan and what else can you recommend?

conny119 don't get PC2700 :-(
You need PC3200, it is the same price anyway.
You can then try the Barton on 400FSB

Anything really :P Something like the Silentboost K7 or the Volcano12 (both by Thermaltake) are good choices

If its the same price yeah but if not, its not a big jump to OC from 166 to 200Mhz :) Also, you dont need PC3200 memory for running a Barton at 400Mhz ... the two clocks are independent :)

Yes PC3200 is for a bus speed of 400mhz. The RAM speed i.e.3200 is how fast it transfers data in theory.3200 indicates that it can transfer at a speed of up to 3200mb/s or 3.2gb/s. When memory is installed in dual channel it will double the speed i.e. 3.2gb/s doubled equals 6.4gb/s. Remember this is the RAMs maximum speed and it is not always attainable. I have overclocked my RAM to ddr500(250fsb) and I still can only get ~5.9gb/s out of it. At stock speed(200) I get ~4.9gb/s from it.

By upping the fsb speed it ups the bus on all mb components. Most motherboards built for overclocking give several options in the BIOS. I lock my AGP and PCI to 33/66 mhz(if your mb doesn't have a lock then it probably has a divider see below) which is default then set the ram ratio to 1:1 to the bus speed this will make the ram run at the fsb speed. If I decide to go to 255fsb windows wont load and at 260 my rig wont post if the ram is 1:1 at any ram voltage this makes 250mhz fsb my max overclock for my ram at 1:1. I can change the divider for my ram to 5:4 and raise the fsb to 275 and this will take the ram to 220mhz. This is done by ratio. Now my ram is running at 4/5 of my fsb(4/5 of 275=220). If you cant understand how I explained it dont be bashful, ask and maybe someone can explain it better.

Wow I need a nap my brain is gone I hope I got it edited right this time.

You might not need PC3200 but you do have to run the memory at 400MHz :-)
The CPU can be run slower than the memory, but not vice-versa!
It just doesn't make sense for anybody to purchase less than PC3200 for any purpose, even 133(266DDR) FSB.

You can run the memory slower than the cpu by setting the divider. I.E. 200fsb@5:4=160 mhz and pc2700 is 166 mhz ram. personally I would rather try to overclock my pc2700 ram to 3200 speed. This should be an easy to obtain overclock on the ram. If not then overclock the cpu at the 5:4 divider to reach the rams rated speed. But you are right about buying the pc3200 to start with would be the best way to go.

Not in AMD-land you can't ;-)
If I run my Barton @ 166/333 (stock) I can choose 5:5 (synchronous) or 5:6 (asynchronous) memory.
There was much discussion about how 333FSB with 400 memory offers insignificant performance increase (not enough improvement to offset latency introduced by asynchronous operation) so I would choose 5:5 and run the memory synchronously @ PC2700 with aggressive timings - memory's underclocked, right?
But to change AMD to 200/400FSB you MUST run PC3200, you cannot run 166/333 PC2700.
No 6:5, nosiree - memory can be faster, but not slower.
In AMD-land that is, but I would be surprised to learn that Intel permits this!
If your mobo runs P4 200/800FSB you are saying you can run 166/333 memory with that!?
Not with AMD.

BTW indienemo 70-74c seems a touch WARM ;-) LoL
Can you say 'EasyBake oven'?
(Oh man you guys probably never heard of that - it's what every young daughter wanted for Xmas decades ago. It's a little baking oven, powered by a 60 watt lightbulb! Got bloody hot, too.)
Getcher self a Volcano7 or something with an 80mm fan and some Copper - doesn't need to weigh 800grams or whatever, just maybe 350grams but including some penny-metal.

In intel land you can do anything. I can change the northbridge strap to 400(100fsb),533(133fsb),667(166fsb), or 800(200fsb)if I want. This would downclock my cpu speed of course but I can run any ram I want to with it. The Bios options with this board are unbelievable.

hi you all my name is chris and im a hardcore intel man =D lol, but i want to go AMD and overclocking

okay my setup will be::
watercooled and i was wondering what kind of overclocking numbers i could get i would like a cheaper processor but a real nice MOBO for overclockking like an ASUS so which processor should i use that is less then $220
and what kind of overclocking numbers should i see at the maximum (watercooled) Thanks

-Chris

Edit:: also i was wondering if i could OC the FSB and memory speeds?????

I have never posted there but I just find thread titles and read about set ups and results. I always bear in mind that not everyone can be pleased and some people cause their own problems. Also I did alot of research on the abit forum.

My board is mostly made of intel(canterwood,ICH5-R). The chipsets limit the board features and the intel ones seem to offer more. I am not trying to be a fan boy but I did alot of research on both(amd, intel) and the intel boards seem to be more overclockable and stable. This is not saying that amd doesn't make a better processor but the boards for them seem more limited. I have read about alot of the amd boards having problems with their agp/pci locks while reaching for higher fsb speeds. I do like the way that alot of amd chips allow you to run the multiplier lower so that you can get higher bus speeds and keep the processor at rated speed(see not voiding warranty). I have read alot of good things about the KV8pro chipsets but the lock still appears to have problems at higher bus speeds. If you have a SATA drive this can cause data corruption or so I have read.
