thanks to rekoj, pulltech1 and LCoop for hte info re new DVD recorders with HD. I figured these were a dead animal already.
I also bought and then returned a Philips model (with a HD) from Sam's Club. I never took it out of the box and really should have. I am sorry I did not keep it now. I am not a techie repair person like so many of you so I just keep my 2 Pannys under warranty and get them repaired that way.
In Hawaii, the local dealer who was repairing these Pannys closed shop so in Nov. I had to send my (newer) EH75V all the way to Illinois to repair. There were a MULTITUDE of problems. Process took one month to go and come back repaired but it was worth it!

soju,
I repaired one of my Panasonic dvd recorder with HDD already twice - those burned capacitors are usually the major problem there. I usually unassembly the unit only partially, and support the board with capacitors with anything on hand (thick flashlight, etc.) while di-soldering and soldering capacitors. And last time, it was pain on neck, because capacitors were in four different places, some of them little bit hard to reach from my partial unassembly. But I made it. For some reason, the model made in Malaysia, keep getting me troubles.
Maybe you did a good thing returning Philips to the store. I actually tested the first model available on the market (I think it was in 2002,) and it was keep turning off on me while recording to DVD+R (it was a model without HDD.) And with prices of DVD+R media that time, it drove me crazy to have so many ruined DVDs.
I returned it to the store within 30 days. No wonder that eBay is full of Philips dvd recorders even with home theater system.
I really like Panasonic dvd recorders with HDD, and I have two of hhtem. However, I am getting more to editing, visual look of dvd menu screen after finalizing of DVD medias, and based on my reading of manual for Pioneer DVR-550H (sold at www.200depot.com and similar websites), the unit seems better than Panasonic. Especially with support for all dvd medias, possiblity to enter titles using regular USB keyboard (instead of remote control,) possibility to connect PC and transfer mp3 or wma files for "Jukebox" feature, etc.
I am still awaiting my new "toy," so I hope that information provided in the manual I found online would be correct.
And the good thing is that SquareTrade offers extended warranty for any item purchased online for approx. $34.99 for price of this unit for 3 years (to be repaired in 5 days or your purchase price will be refunded in full.) So, after testing the new Pioneer, I plan to add aditional warranty to have piece of mind as well. I can exchange capacitors, reconnect loose connections, but I do not think I would be able to solve HDD failure and its replacement. Especially, if I am not sure whehter is possible fo lay person without service manual and data disk, etc.

Just wondering, because if it doesn't cost much, it might be better to go to one rather than try it myself and possibly damage the machine further. After all, I haven't used a souldering iron before.
I could try it out and learn from it, but it could be a costly learning lesson in the process.
I think he charged me $10 - there are several little electronics/TV repair shops here in SW Houston TX - took him about 5 minutes - call a few up and ask about $$how much$$ to replace a couple of capacitors on a circuit board, if you are just taking in the board itself and the new capacitors.
Hello, Lcoop.
Could you kindly show me how to remove the power-supply board ?
(There is a zigzag-shaped connection between this board and the main board, I couldn't figure out how to break this connection so that I can bring the power-board to the repair shop.

The zig-zag connector unplugs from the PCB. I removed it by pulling UP on the power supply board side. I've tried to include a picture here. If it is attached, you can see the main PCB with the power supply board removed on the right side with the connector dangling.

Nice photo, Yankee10.
Thank you for your help. I finally managed to dis-cconnect the PSB from the main board.
Before taking the PSB to repair shop I thought I tried somthing different. I wanted to experiment with a 20GB, thinking that 120GB may require higher power and long time to reformat.
This morning I replaced the 120GB drive with a 20GB (already formated on Windows) drive, plud the power to the machine. Same as with 120GB case, I saw the "Please Wait" and heard humming noise from the drive (this meant the drive is spinning ?), the difference point is the DVD door opened every 1 or 2 minutes, something pushing the open/close button could close the door, but sometime I has to push power button to close the door.
I left it there, will find out the result when I go home after work.

Looks like I'm getting full guide data again, yeah!
Thought I'd pass along something I learned from the MacroVision guys. I was getting channel lineup and banners last December, but no guide data. They told me that the only way that could happen is if the channel lineup was wrong. He showed me the lineup I should be using and the only difference was he said CSPAN - none and I had CSPAN - 124. I realized that without a cable box attached, the DVR can't get channel 124, which may have been why I wasn't getting guide data after the last lineup change. I'm pretty sure that that's the first time it's asked me to pick a lineup, where some of them were greater then 99 and without thinking about I selected the one with CSPAN on 124. Something to consider when picking those channel lineups.

I have Comcast in Calif too (Mt View) and I'm still not getting any TVG. Is it back up for you?

I live a few miles down the road from you. The TVGOS signal went out on my Comcast March 17. I've reset the machine 3 times but it's just not picking up anything. Even the time doesn't set, that used to happen in about 5 minutes. Now it just flashes 12:00 unless I set it manually. There just isn't a signal on any analog host channel now.

You guys should call your host station and ask what's up. They may be shifting to a different station.

There are problems here in Connecticut with TVGOS. WNTH (Ch 8) out of New Haven (via Comcast cable) is the host - and my DMR-85H hasn't gotten updates in over two weeks. I e-mailed the TVGOS support folks and they started to investigate - finally sending an e-mail on Fri 3/20 that the problem had been corrected and that data was now passing thru the host; that I should have listings "within 24 hours". Well - still no new listings, so I e-mailed again and they're going even further up the chain to see what's going on.

Yikes, just went to insert a dvd to dud to and the door will NOT open up! First time I have encountered this. It is making a slight churning noise when it should open - like a motor is trying to work....
Too early to call Panasonic!

The TV Guide here in Alabama is not working either. I have Comcast and Panasonic. Comcast had no idea why and Panasonic took a bunch of information and said "a Tech will call you back in about 6 weeks." 6 WEEKS what the heck is going on that it takes 6 weeks I asked and she said it's cause of all this digital switch stuff some companies are not sending the information out correctly. So for now I have to set manual recordings this sucks.

Not getting it yet. Could you call Comcast & ask them what's up?

Calling Comcast is not likely to help. Their customer support people have probably never even heard of TVGOS. Calling Panasonic won't help, either, most likely.
What worked for me was calling the local host station and asking to speak to a broadcast engineer. They can talk to the people at Comcast who actually know what's going on. And can fix it, if you're lucky.
We had another brief outage here in the Boston burbs, then right after it came back my Panasonic spontaneously reset itself. So I had to start from scratch again. But it's back now.
Every time something like this happens, I worry--is the Panasonic starting to fail? Or is it the signal again?

It's the station your Panasonic tunes to when it's turned off (when the TV Guide is working, anyway). Usually I think it's a PBS affiliate, though mine recently changed to the local CBS affiliate.

The TV Guide is up and running fine here in CA.
I have a question thought about programming for recordings. If I tell the tv guide to label something as a Favorite, shouldn't it be recording it every time it comes on? This has never worked for me. It simply records the next episode and then it ignores those that follow. Does anyone know how this should work?
Meanwhile, is anyone else recording 24? My system did not record last Monday's episode and I want all of them. If you have it and can make a disk, maybe you can email me at the address below? Thanks. K

What you want to do is set it to record a program, then use the blue button to set it to record "regularly"--that way it'll record the show when it's on, and not record the time slot when it's not on.
Of course, that only works when TV Guide is working. For shows I really care about, I also set a weekly timed recording, as a backup. (But let the TVGuide program setting override it as long as the show is listed.)
I've never used Favorites, or even understood what it was.

Comcast is forcing extended basic cable users over to digital. I would think that would hit a lot of people on this forum. For the upgrade they give the customer a Pace DC50X Digital Transport Adapter (DTA) which converts the digital signal into analog.
With this, I have 2 issues:
1. Will the TV-Guide (TVGOS) work again? Anyone have any luck with this?
2. The DMR-E95 didn't include "Pace" in the list of supported cable boxes for using the IR-blaster. Does anyone know if there is a compatible cable box from the supported list? If I select that it is not listed it proceeds to step through each "code" and ask if the cable box changed channel.. the problem I have is that the cheap little box doesn't display a channel. The channel is displayed on the screen... and the Panasonic UI doesn't show the TV so I can tell if it is working.
According to some reviews of the DMR-E95 doesn't work with digital cable. But I figure there are a lot of smart folks on this forum... if there is a way... someone here will know how.

I was able to clone the HDD I had in my DMR-HS2 (40GB)
using a hex editor (WinHex) it shows up as a physical drive,
I cloned the whole drive to a backup file
then I was able to play the video with VLC Video player
(and cut it into shorter videos with a MPEG video cutter).
Originally posted by izmay: I'm a newbie to writing on forums, but I've read this thread many times for info regarding my E85H. The advice here is better than anything offered by Panasonic.
I have a machine that is currently Out of Service following a U99 error (caused by dividing) that cannot be resolved. No combination of key presses will revive the thing. The DVD drive won't open, so I can't update the software. I unplugged the machine for 2 weeks, then pulled the HD power cable and powered on, at which point it got stuck at *TEST L1.
I have decided to retire the hard drive on the off chance that I can someday recover its contents. I need advice on the choice and installation of a new drive.
I currently have a 120GB Maxtor DiamondMax 16. It has worked like a charm since a repair place installed it several years ago. I've looked around on the web and see lots and lots of drives. I'm not a computer person and know next to nothing about hard drives. All I have to go on is the currently installed drive. I need to know about RPM (5400 or 7200), cache size (2MB or 8MB), and terms such as EIDE, ATA, PATA, SATA, etc. The Maxtor is ATA/133. I've been told to get a 160GB Western Digital that runs quietly and stays cool.
Also, as a not computer-savvy person, how difficult is the replacement? I've already had the box open. I can see the connections. Are we talking pulling two cables, switching boxes, and plugging things back in? Or do I need to be wary of static electricity and possibly frying the whole machine with one false move? I can always go to a computer shop and ask them to do the installation.
Thanks everyone for the seemingly endless amounts of information. I saw posts from 2005, I had no idea they were still coming.

I'm extremely interested in cloning a couple of DMR-Ex5 drives--or at least extracting the files from them. I have VLC that I use with my four RTV's and a couple of DVArchive PCs.
What did you do with WinHex to get the drive image/data over to the Computer HDD?

This is just a dummy post to use up the rest of this page so that it will roll over to a new one and we don't have to keep scrolling horizontally because of the huge pictures.
I'll put in a few lines and hope it works.
After all, we are near the max at the bottom of the page.
Let's see if this works.....
