So has anybody seen anything that locks up the Desktop wallpaper like the spyware I saw on my friend's computer?
As I said, basicly when you go to the Display Properties the whole Desktop tab is greyed out and you can't change anything.

hi, is it possible for FireFox to have a browser hijacker? its very strange, it used to be able to block almost all popups. now, i get popups all the time even with FireFox. i have the option checked where it blocks pop ups, so its not that. i have reinstalled it and i have the newest version. i used to have Norton Internet Security 2005 but recently got rid of it. i have another virus scanner though so i dont think its a virus. any help?

ok. im having problems. when i use FireFox, i get a popup called "http://media.fastclick.net" and it is a fake "registry cleaner" . no other popups seem to appear with FireFox, only that. also, when i use internet explorer, i keep getting 2 sites, one of them is called "winfix" or something, but my explorer blocks it so its just an empty page. another site is this.... http://antispyware.winantivirus.com/?aid=vm_fm_wav&lid=&ax=2 . it first ask me if i want to scan for spyware and no matter what i click it goes to that site. i have ran almost everything i can think of. Ad-Aware, Spybot, trend-micro, avast! anti virus. STILL cant get rid of it. this is becoming very annoying. it was probably installed by another memeber of my family that has no idea how to use the computer, because i am very careful with what i install. can anyone help me with this?

it looks like you guys have to do some work yourselfs actully. Try this and let me know what happens:
In Run in the Start Menu type msconfig and press OK
That should open a Microsoft Configuration window. In that window click on the startup tab and uncheck everything other than you AntiVirus. It's the last tab.
If you dont recognize something, uncheck it even if you end up unchecking everything. Then reboot and see if that fixes the problem.
If it does then you have some program running at Startup that's doing all this and from there we can work on removing but first see if that works.

hi, i have unchecked everything besides Avast!, Peer Guardian, Trend Micro, Spybot S&D and my soundcard. i STILL am getting the Pop-up for Explorer asking me to install WAS5Scan.cab, and still getting the "fastclick.net" adds for FireFox. i use Trend-Micro every time i start the computer, and it sometimes finds a CoolWebSeach varient, but it says it deletes it. What else can be done? this is getting very very frustrating, knowing i have all these programs supposed to stop this kind of crap....

I've only checked some of the more recents posts. Did not see "Spyware Doctor" listed. Adaware and Spybot are good. However, Spyware Doctor, right out of the gate that found stuff the other's had not. Give SD a try. Get it at www.download.com

to run Windows in safe mode, right after you pass the BIOS part where it detects your drives keep pressing F8 and you will get a menu choose Safe Mode and press enter.

I would advise against running REGEDIT unless you really know what you are doing. In W98se you can run MSCONFIG. I think config was put back in for XP. For W2K, it is absent and must be downloaded and either installed ro run from removable media. An option is a program called WINPATROL.
For security & program integrity & such, try using BELARC ADVISOR.
Time for some Google searching.

If you look at the previous page, I did link to Spyware Doctor. However there is one stupid thing about it. The free version does not clean or remove anything. All it does is search for problems but it doesnt fix them.
Now if you know what you're doing you can remove them manually. That's actully how I use it. But if you don't know your way around Windows, it's kind of pointless to use Spyware Doctor unless you're going to buy it.
But yes I agree if you're going to buy a tool Spyware Doctor would be a good choice.

well i think i finally figured out the problem. thanks to gamespy, i had port 6667 open... after running spydoctor it said that was a common port for spyware to come through. i closed it, installed Norton again, and everything is working fine now. thanks for the help you offered, ill be sure to come back in case more problems come up.

glad to hear that everything got fixed but i want emphasize that a firewall is a must. At least have one firewall. I would recommend getting some Antivirus that has built in firewall capability and using the Windows firewall.
like Trend Micro Internet Security
Also if you already have some antivirus you can try some free excellent firewalls like:
KPF: http://www.kerio.com/kpf_home.html ZA: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/products/sku_list_z...
Did you have a firewall running before? What firewall do you use now?

ok, originally i had norton internet security, with a firewall. but something happened with norton and i had to uninstall it. so then i enabled the windows firewall, and installed Avast for the anti virus. soon after, i was getting the pop ups and spyware ads, dispite the FOUR anti spyware programs i had on my computer. recently i installed gamespy (shitty program in my opinion) and it requires u to open like , 6 or 7 ports on your fire, one being the 6667 port, which i later found out was a common port used by spyware programs. so i closed it. then, i decided to put norton back on, becasue i found out the problem with that, and reinstalled the firewall on that. since then its been fire. on a side note, after opening all those ports for gamespy, i still couldnt get it to work......but im willing to not use that program, in order to stop getting those annoying adds... before i finally got rid of them, i was getting 4 or 5 different ones for internet explorer, taking up entire pages and just randomly showing up. i also was getting one for FireFox. but it seems everything is better now. i checked 3 different sites to make sure my firewall is secure, and all are saying its fine. thanks for your help.
